The Voice General Discussion Thread 🧵

I don’t mix politics with entertainment. I think pretty much all of my past snowflakes have liberal views. Sometimes, I roll my eyes, but I’m not going to attack them, or stop supporting them, just because I disagree with them on some issues. This swings both ways. If an artist has conservative views, they should be able to express them without getting attacked by the left. It’s treacherous ground for the artists either way.

His performance of "For What Its Worth" was an obvious nod from him and Pharrell towards the protests at that time..

Sawyer has a platform, and if he has intelligent things to say he should use it. I think fans should also recognize that he's a teenager - and the way he says things might not be as eloquent as his internal thoughts.

He’s not a teenager anymore. He’s 21 yo.

Time flies!

Agreed. I like country music, and I'm very liberal. I'm just not quite sure how Racism (or human rights in general) is political. We have labelled things "political" that just....shouldn't be

I never said there weren't. I think Mark Cuban made some smart remarks on this a little ways back, talking about us all having built in prejudices, and being a little bit racist.

BLM though is most definitely not a Democratic group, and most protests have come in areas with Democrats in charge. The people upset with BLM tend to be upset/responding to the idea that the discrimination against Black people is systemic and something wrong with the police vs a few bad apples. As well as the overall idea that white supremacy exists, and systematic racism.

I’m not going to get into a back and forth, but the people attacking the contestants view BLM as a Dem/leftist organization. Politics often take precedence over issues. If I was a contestant, and wanted to speak out on the issue, I would do so without mentioning BLM. I think it would be much more effective at reaching the fans who are offended by the politics.

... Not all traditional/conservative people are completely close-minded though, just to agree on that though.

Ya know I REALLY wanted to let that go but your use of "completely" undermines the collegial spirit you may have intended.  For instance, if someone said: not all liberals are completely lacking in critical thinking,  just to agree on that though.  Would you feel agreed with?

Peace

Damn right there are. (Or at least self identified as. I don't know how you can both be progressive..ie..challenging the status quo of society and looking for improvements..and also racist..)See my feelings towards Sanders and the Brocialists.

Racism and white privilege isn't a Republican or Democrat thing - it's a white people thing. Something we have to face as a country. The reason Democrats get a break is because individual white Democrats have made some progress for communities of color (LBJ and the Clintons in particular). And the dog whistles Democrats/liberals use aren't as widely known as what Conservatives/Republicans use. But if you know what's there..

And also, just to be clear..BLM has protested and challenged Democrat candidates as well. It may be considered "left" but the orgranization doesn't view itself as part of the Democratic party. It's just that Democratic candidates have been willing to listen to them and discuss the issue with them. (I think Rubio did as well?)

Yes, I agree on privilege.  Racism is far more ubiquitous. Few people speak of tribalism but I believe that is the true enemy.

He won Season 8 which was 5 years ago. He turned 16 during the run of the show which makes him 21 now.

Please stop using "conservative" as dog whistle for racist.  That is ignorant, presumptive and globally demeaning.  If you mean racist, say that.  If you mean people in denial about their privilege....say that.  Being fiscally and/or morally conservative does not make you a racist.

I agree that was probably a better way for me to word that. I admit using "conservative" as a dog-whistle is at least slightly jaded by personal experiences with friends and family on all sides of the political/social/fiscal spectrum; that said, it doesn't excuse the poor word choice. Racism, after all, is a human issue that isn't limited to one political or socioeconomic group.

On a note that takes things back to the contestants, I'm happy to see many of them taking advantage of their platforms to speak up, even if I don't always agree with their point entirely. Pleasantly surprised that most of my faves have done so, to be honest.

The only reason I know how old he is is because he's the only winner approximately my age (the next closest in age to me is Danielle, who's nearly two years older than me while Sawyer is just under a year younger). Still wild to think that season 8 was five years ago though.

Either that, or his mom posted those things on his accounts. Are we even sure Sawyer is politically active? I honestly haven’t paid much attention to his social media over the past few years. I just know that his mom has helped him with his accounts over the years. Does she still do that?

EDIT- I just checked. Yes, she does still post some things on there for him. She often puts her name on the post.

Chris Trousdale from Season 3 has died from Coronavirus at only 34 years old. 😢

Couldn't find his full audition on YouTube but here's a snippet:

I forgot he auditioned for the show but I vaguely remember Dream Street being a thing. Sad to hear he's passed on.

Brooke's post is getting a LOT of support from other Voice alumni, especially Season 13 of course (we stan this season for so many resons)

Also, this is Kelsea Johnson from Season 14's take (she goes by Aria Bleu now)

Can't say I disagree with her. She calls out Darcy in a comment below that.

So I will say, I think all the coaches + Carson have said something. I think NBC put out a statement for all their shows, but I don't think any individual show has commented.

One of them hasn't said anything.
