Blake: Now this is the match that i really want! All of ypu really did well! Considering that i pair both of my steals! As OneUp finishes performing, the struggle is real on who am i going to bring in the lives, im not really sure if some of my co-coaches gonna steal one of you! Mercedes! Your voice really improved a lot! You now have that really nice tone that will capture every heart of people! And im glad that you did sing a country rock, it really suits to your voice! Just missing out on the top spot is the last remaining on Team Nick (in this and the actual season), the only female S20 finalist, and the contestant who had the biggest underdog/growth journey of the season. Watching Rachel throughout this season has been amazing and her growth from her audition to the  finale was insane.  My journey with Rachel started off in a unique way (I guess that’s what you could call it ) Her and Gean’s socials were the hardest to find. It took about a month after hearing about Rachel through sources to finally find her socials. Let me tell you though, it was 100% WORTH THE WAIT. The covers that were on Rachel’s Instagram account were some of my favorite pre-season covers for Season 20. Her cover of “Burning House” is what really pulled me in. I was drawn in by her gorgeous tone and I soon found myself listening to all her Instagram covers multiple times! Her tone and vibrato reminded me of Addison, one of my favorite contestants of all-time, plus she had Mac in her name, like Noah Mac, my other Season 13 favorite, so this was just a match made in heaven for me!  The main issue with Rachel was that I didn’t really expect her to go far on the show and even mentioned this in one of my private chats (oh how wrong I was… ) The main reason was because the sources weren’t too kind to Rachel’s audition and made it seem like it was really bad. However, Rachel ended up having a pretty solid audition. It was her weakest performance of the competition, but it was still solid, which is a testament to how much she has grown while being on the Voice. Rachel sang Patty Griffin’s “Let Him Fly” for her audition. This performance REALLY introduced us to Rachel’s vibrato, and the “really” is in caps for a reason. Rachel’s tone sounded gorgeous on the song, but her vibrato was a bit out of control, which might have been due to nerves. This song is a big one, so I commend Rachel for taking it on and doing a good enough job with it. One thing I will really credit Nick for (this is a rare moment for me guys ) is seeing the potential in Rachel, and I am so happy that he was rewarded with her as his finalist after being able to see that. Nick was the only one to turn, so Rachel defaulted to his team. She still showed her love for another coach, Blake Shelton (I’m actually typing this on his birthday ), after hilariously revealing that she made a slideshow for Blake in school. I go back to this audition to see Rachel’s humble beginnings on the Voice, and to see that funny interaction with Blake. It was one of the most wholesome things ever and it’s so rare to see a teen girl obsess over Blake and not Nick. Rachel really started to shine in her battle with Bradley, which was one of the best battles of the season and the only one to get a standing ovation from all four coaches!  The only bad thing about this battle was that it was in the last taping and none of the coaches had a steal available. Like I mentioned in Bradley’s write-up, Bradley was more solid vocally, but Rachel’s tone is what really won me over. Rachel exhibited way more control of her voice here, especially with her vibrato, and the growth from her audition to this battle was evident. This is where Rachel really started to emerge as a favorite of mine. I re-listened to this battle so many times and I really hope they get to record it.  My favorite part is probably the beginning where Rachel starts. She executed this part with such grace and class. Her floral dress was stunning too! Nick, with some persuasion from Blake, ended up going with Rachel, which I was happy to see. If anyone had doubts about whether or not that was a good decision, I’m sure those doubts were all erased after hearing Rachel’s flawless Knockout performance, which actually ended up being my favorite Knockout of the season (and part of the reason why I placed Rachel over Gihanna. ) At first, I preferred Cam’s Knockout, but after re-watching Rachel’s non-stop (literally, I couldn’t get it out of my head for DAYS), hers edged out on top. This was my favorite performance from Rachel (though she had other great ones in the lives) and it was mainly because this is where everything really came together for Rachel. Her vibrato wasn’t overused and was used in meaningful ways, and her tone really shined on this one as well. The thing that really impressed me was the sustained high note near the end of the performance.  I did not expect that AT ALL from Rachel and that was the moment where I really considered her a contender. She had range, power, tone, and flawless vibrato. This was my favorite performance of a stacked night and I was so happy to see Rachel rewarded with the Knockout win! I initially had doubts about Nick letting go of his four-chair turn, but those doubts were all erased after this (and after the Playoffs performances… ) In the Playoffs, Rachel sang my favorite Kacey Musgraves song, “Rainbow” (yes, I know I’m basic ) and killed it! I was so excited to see her tackle a country song because I knew it was a genre she was hoping to explore. Many had doubts about how Rachel would do live, which made me a bit nervous for her, but after “Rainbow,” I really became confident in her live singing abilities. First off, Rachel’s outfit for this performance was gorgeous and it might be my favorite outfit of the season! This was a beautiful performance as well. This was definitely an emotional one for Rachel (I think she even dedicated it to her fans and called it an “anthem” for her fanbase, which just speaks volumes about her as a person. ), and she even got emotional near the end of the performance. While it wasn’t perfect vocally, she truly made me feel something, and the performance even ended up being my favorite from Team Nick that night! I guess America thought so too as she was voted into the Top 9. Now, I will say that Rachel took a bit of a step back in her Semifinals performance of “Human.” This song wasn’t an exact fit for her and I don’t really think Nick knew what he was doing with this one… (I mean I think he was the one to compare Rachel to Billie Eilish, so…  ) Now, I do think IDF was too harsh on this one. There were some really great, powerful moments that should definitely be recognized. Her vibrato sounded GORGEOUS on the song and really shined on the more intimate parts. The thing I loved about this performance the most though was that it was so powerful. The intimate parts were so emotionally gripping and the high energy parts were also powerful because of the amount of range and power that Rachel exhibited in her voice. Say what you want about the vocals, but the important thing about this one was the message, and I’d say Rachel was able to convey that well. Rachel even smiled a bit at the end, which I hope meant that she was content with the performance. This performance ended up being my favorite from Team Nick that night () and America agreed once again, sending her through to the finale. Before I forget though, I want to talk about Rachel’s group performance with Gih and Jordan. This is pretty much a copy/paste comment from Gih’s write-up but Rachel’s solo parts were really good, while the harmonies were a bit lacking. Her vibrato sounded nice here, especially on her solo parts. I think she forgot some lyrics at the beginning of her first solo part, but we’ll just ignore that and move on to my thoughts on her making the finale… Rachel was the only female finalist this season and the first female one chair to ever make the finale.  Rachel making the finale was huge for me for two reasons: one, because I would have never guessed that she would be in the finale after only turning one chair after a performance that needed a lot of improvement and two, because after all of Nick’s bad decisions throughout the season, he still managed to end up with a great finalist (his coaching “style” reminds me of Anne-Marie’s - it’s basically “who cares about the journey, it’s all about the destination” .) Also, me having Cam and Rachel (my Top 2 of the season, even though I didn’t really know it at the time lol) in the finale was huge and hasn’t happened since I think Season 10 with Alisan and Hannah (and even that one is cloudy because Mary Sarah exists and I didn’t have a ranking list back in Season 10 lol.) Rachel’s finale performances are also the main reason why she is above Gihanna. I loved them both, and the fact that she had more performances gave her a slight edge over Gih (like I said though, both are amazing! ) Rachel sang Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” for her ballad song. First of all, her outfit for this performance put her “Rainbow” outfit in serious competition for my favorite outfit of the season! The crown and dress were gorgeous. Rachel sounded beautiful here and this might be the performance from Rachel that I felt the most connected to. Her touching dedication letter in the beginning and her vocal choices (the intimate parts and that sustained note near the end were amazing) really made this one of my favorite performances of the night and from Rachel’s run on the show (also, my favorites always slay this song - Emily Ann, Keisha, and now Rachel ) Now, I really only planned on voting for Cam that night, but Rachel’s up-tempo performance is what forced me to open up the app again and vote for her. Rachel sang “The Chain” and slayed!!! This ended up being one of my favorite performances from Rachel (probably my second favorite behind “Foolish Games”.) She brought so much power and passion and she dominated the stage in a way that I had never seen before. The hat throw was iconic (I see she’s taking after Queen Dana and the ending was vocal slayage. This performance was Rachel’s last “competition performance” and she most definitely ended on a high note. If you compare this to her blind, I guarantee you will question if the two singers are the same person. Before I talk about her placement, I just want to acknowledge her amazing coach-contestant performance with Nick. I usually don’t mention these in the write-ups, but this one was just so extraordinary that I just had to. This was by far one of Nick’s best live vocals and Rachel sounded fantastic as always. The two made for a great duet pairing and I’d say they did justice to that Foo Fighters’ song. I really wanted a Cam and Rachel Top 2 (at least I got it here lol), but I had a feeling that Rachel would miss out. This ended up being the case, but Rachel ended up placing in 4th, which was one place higher than I expected her to, so I was pretty content with that. Rachel visited her fan thread shortly after the finale (I kind of expected her to after Gihanna and Carolina did lol) and she was so sweet. She even gave us the iconic “muah.”  Rachel’s relationship with the other contestants, especially Zae (*flashbacks to their chaotic Roblox livestream* ) was so cool to see. I’m glad she was able to make some lasting friends from this experience! Also, for those wanting a breakdown… I preferred Rachel to Gihanna in every round they were both in except blinds and Semis. Rachel’s finale performances are what really brought her to this deserved 2nd place. Rachel will forever be one of my favorite Voice contestants of all-time. Her growth arc, emotional performances, and vocal power all made for one of my favorite runs in Voice history. She is one of a kind and I am so interested to see which direction she will take with her post-show career.
Clue: Nothing for the legend himself? (Rachel gave some special recognition to all the coaches except John Legend in her blind audition segment: she made a powerpoint for Blake, included Kelly’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes” as her favorite song on her trivia image, and joined Team Nick.)

 

 

This does mean that Cam is my favorite of the season. I hope to have his write-up posted by the end of the day, but if not, it should be out tomorrow.
