American Idol Unpopular Opinions Thread

Emmy's performance on Monday was only memorable for the novelty factor of singing her grandmother's song. It was good by her standards but still one of the weaker performances of the night. Like every song she chooses it was a very easy song with a 1 octave range and she still struggled with pitch. She should've been in the bottom 2 instead of Kaibrienne (well actually Tristan should've been but that was never gonna happen lol)

Both her and Triston should go this week.

Actually i appreciate that Emmy finally sang with some emotion because she has sang with zero emotion in those previous three round. That's my biggest issue with her, that she sings songs that are heavily emotionally charged but i don't feel anything from her. But obviously she was gonna have an special connection with a song by her grandmother, and she did great job. Unlike others, i actually loved the performance.

With that said, good luck singing Adele, she is gonna need it :ph34rwave:

The endless posts here complaining about country singers outlasting the others (especially last night) are more annoying than the actual country contestants making it far every year.

ABC: *realizes American Idol makes more in brand association and revenue from tying it into CMA Fest every summer*

Also ABC: *casts more and more country/country-adjacent contestants since their two most successful alumni have been country*

If people are really bothered by how the show is nowadays, just stop watching. That's what I did when The Voice years ago. 🤷‍♂️

I have to wait in that Cmafest line this year to meet Emmy our country music adjacent Queen.

At least on The Voice forums they seemed to have reached the acceptance stage of grief about their country music overlords.

i used to be a country music hater, but thanks to a combination of many of my friends listening to country (as well as Idol/The Voice playing a factor) i've learned to appreciate it more. i don't like bro-country on Idol, but is it fun when it comes on at a party? yes tbh.

if any IDF members who dislike country want an easy/accesible introduction along IDF's typical tastes, listen to "Golden Hour" by Kacey Musgraves and "Cowboy Carter" by Beyoncé. i'm well aware these albums are not peak country music lol, but they can at least pave the way towards learning to appreciate the basics of the genre while also maintaining mainstream pop elements.

I second the Kacey Musgraves recommendation. I'm not much of a country fan myself, but ended up buying her Golden Hour album after watching her perform at Coachella years ago.

Luke Bryan is the best ABC judge.

Lionel is very sweet, but way too cheesy, and a lot of what he says makes no sense.

Katy Perry is hit or miss for me. She'll give solid advice from time to time but most of it is "sing louder" for non-powerhouse singers.. also her antics are so over-the-top.

i find luke to be the most sincere and "least" cringy of the 3. Not that he doesnt have his moments ofc.

Luke has also been very supportive of s19 winner Chayce Beckham since his journey on the show ended.

I think Katy would fit better in an in-house mentor role like what Bobby used to be. Her song choices during the judges contest week are usually my favourites; when she does offer advice, I find it’s usually the best as well.

Since she’s leaving the show, I actually agree that she’d be great as an in-house mentor, due to picking great songs for the judges contest week usually.

Whoever edited Abi's hometown package should probably be fired. All her video package did was praise her while Will's hometown package presented him as a relatable person. If Will wins, it's because his hometown package was so much better.

Quintavious was the best vocalist of the season (doesn't mean best contestant, mind you)

And I was missing Roman more than i thought I would after his elimination. Up until that rendition of roar I actually thought he had the best overall run. No one on this season worked the stage quite like him, and his vocals were always interesting, if not exciting.

Jayna was the best for me.

It's definitely between those 2. Only reason I went with Quintavious is because he matches her range as a man, which is a bit more uncommon.

Idk how unpopular this is but Jayna only making top 12 was a worse robbery than Kaeyra last year imo.

Jayna's problem was that she had a massive identity crisis. I mean, she flip-flopped from stuff like Demi Lovato & Paramore to Mariah/Whitney ballads. She can definitely sing, and I guess could've lasted longer, but she didn't play the Idol game well at all.

Reading through this season's threads, I'm also scratching my head at Nya being somewhat popular on here. I thought she was pure cabaret, not what this show is looking for at all. Wasn't surprised to learn that she's a career Broadway performer... even though that's cool and all and I hope her stint on the show leads to her getting more jobs.

Finally, I flove Kayko and it's hilarious how much he made this website seethe lmao. His songwriting skills are legit, some of the best originals I've ever heard on this show.

I don’t think the Demi and Paramore songs were that out of character though, they’re also made for big voices like hers. I mean if she didn’t do stuff like that people would’ve criticized her for not being current. Also I thought her Celine and Whitney covers were impressive on their own merits even if they’re not gonna go over well with the audience.

Yeah well, I tell people all the time that the reason I quit watching Idol for years is because I felt like I'd seen everything there is to see. Jayna apparently gave us the 14th(!!) cover of IHN on American Idol, you legit can't get more "been there, done that to death" than that. Maybe if she'd made more inspired song choices like the Foo Fighters song, she could've stuck around longer... or not. I just know that doing decent covers of Mariah and Whitney songs on a talent competition isn't gonna cut it these days, unfortunately.
