FrogLenzen Posted November 2, 2020 Share Posted November 2, 2020 Blindspotting (2018) Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs in Blindspotting Blindspotting is a comedy/drama that was written by childhood friends Rafael and Daveed over the course of about ten years. They also helped produce the film and play the two lead characters, seen in the above gif. Daveed is best known for being part of the original case of Hamilton, for which he won a Grammy and a Tony. You may also recognize him from popular TV shows Black-ish and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In Blindspotting, Daveed plays a convicted felon who is on his last few days of probation. He works with his best friend, played by Rafael, for a moving company in Oakland, CA. Daveed's character witnesses a violent police brutality incident, and we follow him as he figures out how to process the event and take a closer look at Oakland and his station in life. Rotten Tomatoes calls it a "buddy comedy with seething social commentary." The film was very well received by critics, and Daveed was praised for his performance and earned a nomination for Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards. FrogLenzen Posted November 2, 2020 Share Posted November 2, 2020 Cold War (2018) Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot in Cold War Cold War (AKA Zimna wojna in Polish) is a historical drama co-produced by people in Poland, France, and the UK. It was nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. The film was directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, who also co-wrote the screenplay. It stars Polish actors Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot, as seen in the above gif. Joanna plays a young singer who is pretending to be a peasant, and is on probation after assaulting her father. Tomasz plays a musical director who is holding auditions for a folk music ensemble. The two characters meet and a complicated relationship blossoms. Part of the drama is that the music ensemble is sponsored by the government. The film is set in the 1940s during the Cold War, so there are tensions with the government, international borders, etc. We follow the characters as their paths cross over the course of a couple decades. Rotten Tomatoes says the film "doesn't waste a moment of its brief running time — and doesn't skimp on its bittersweet emotional impact." The film is only 88 minutes long.
