FrogLenzen
Just in case public noms are next/soon/ever happening, and also just in case this is helpful to any rankers, I wasted time and made the following list. It has all the remaining movies by year, along with language, genre, Rotten Tomatoes score, and some actors. FYI the info is all from Rotten Tomatoes so sorry if the genres are weird, and also sorry if I misspelled anything or picked weird actors to list, and also if the language was English I put USA unless there was easy evidence it was from another country, and also sorry if I got any of the movies/information/whatever incorrect lol I tried my best. Feel free to steal and repost with different formatting or make edits or arrange by genre or whatever. I put the years in reverse order so you can finally kill off some of 2018 2019 (16 remaining): 1917 - USA - Drama/History/War - 89% - George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman Ash is Purest White - Chinese - Drama/Romance - 99% - Zhao Tao, Liao Fan Avengers: Endgame - USA - Action/Fantasy/SciFi - 94% - Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans Clemency - USA - Drama - 92% - Afre Woodard, Aldis Hodge The Farewell - USA - Drama/Comedy - 98% - Awkwafina, Tzi Ma Harriet - USA - Drama/History/Biography - 73% - Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monae Jojo Rabbit - USA - Drama/Comedy - 79% - Roman Griffin Davis, Scarlett Johansson The Lighthouse - USA - Drama/Thriller - 90% - Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe Little Women - USA - Drama - 95% - Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh Midsommar - USA - Horror/Thriller - 83% - Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor Parasite - Korean - Drama/Thriller - 98% - Song Kang-ho, Yeo-jeong Jo The Peanut Butter Falcon - USA - Drama/Comedy/Adventure - 96% - Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - USA - Comedy/Thriller - 68% - Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith Portrait of a Lady on Fire - French - Drama/Romance/History - 98% - Noemie Merlant, Adele Haenel Rocketman - USA - Drama/Musical/Biography - 89% - Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell Shazam! - USA - Comedy/Fantasy/Action - 90% - Zachary Levi, Mark Strong Toy Story 4 - USA - Animated/Comedy/Fantasy - 97% - Tom Hanks, Tim Allen Us - USA - Horror/Thriller - 93% - Lupita Nyong'o, Elisabeth Moss 2018 (25 remaining): Annihilation - USA - Thriller/SciFi - 88% - Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh Ben Is Back - USA - Drama/Thriller - 81% - Julia Roberts, Lucas Hedges Black Panther - USA - Action/Fantasy - 96% - Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Deeee
The Wind Rises (2013 dir. by Hayao Miyazaki) The last thing I ever want to do is cut a Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki-directed film. But here I am. Doing just that. Because these nominations were tragic on so many levels. The Wind Rises is actually a biographical drama film adapted from the Miyazaki manga series of the same name. The manga series was loosely based on the novel The Wind Has Risen by Tatsuo Hori, as well as based on the life of famous fighter aircraft designer, Jiro Horikoshi. Horikoshi was the chief engineer of the Mitsubishi A5M aircraft and the successor aircraft, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, both of which were used by the Japanese Empire during World War II. The Wind Rises is a fictionalized biography of Horikoshi's life from 1918 to 1945, starting with his desire to become a pilot and ending with his feelings on the creation of those aircrafts and the consequences of war. This happened to be the first Miyazaki solo project since Ponyo and his supposed last film before retirement, until he announced that he is working on How Do You Live? set for a 2023 release. Very exciting. At first Miyazaki rejected the idea of making his manga into a film, considering most Ghibli films were geared towards a younger audience. But he came around to the idea and I think it was good that he did. Because the film is absolutely beautiful in every way. While not the most fantastical or exciting Ghibli feature, the film instead takes a good, hard look at the consequences of capitalism and imperialism, the corruption of war, and the disappearance of beauty from a country not yet touched by such massive destruction. The movie is pretty unflinching in its approach, but Miyazaki's vision real is fully realized. And realized very well. The Wind Rises received critical acclaim and a ton of awards recognition, most notably an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The film currently holds a score of 83/100 on Metacritic and an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Among a ton of other award nominations and wins, the film did not come without controversy. Of course, Miyazaki's take on the Japanese involvement in World War II would drum up a lot of attention and criticism from political parties. Because Miyazaki is a pacifist who definitely does not agree much with the Japanese entry into WWII. The Japanese voice cast includes Hideaki Anno, Miori Takimoto, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Masahiko Nishimura, Morio Kazama, Keiko Takeshita, Mirai Shida, Jun Kunimura, Shinobu Otake, and Nomura Mansai. The English voice cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Martin Short, Werner Herzog, Martin Short, William H. Macy, Edie Mirman, Mae Whitman, Mandy Patinkin, Jennifer Grey, Stanley Tucci, Elijah Wood, Darren Criss, and Ronan Farrow. With Ghibli films so widely available and easily accessible now, you all should have zero excuse to not check out these brilliant movies. Sad to cut this film, but happy to give it this write-up and see it come so far. SAVING: Looper
Alex95
Cycle 13.2 ~Public Noms~ The audience has been sitting on the sidelines watching the rankers nominate, cut, and save their favorite and least favorite movies. Now, the public gets to take over. Anyone whose been following along can pm or dm me five films they would like to see nominated. Please rank them from 1 (most want to see nominated) to 5 (fifth most wanted to see nominated). I'll post the 20 nominations at 5:30 pm EST tomorrow (Oct 9th). The ten rankers can then cut and save from this list. PUBLIC, YOU HAVE TILL 5:30 TOMORROW TO PM ME YOUR NOMS. The sooner you get noms in, the more likely you'll get to have more choices nominated. 2
