ABC: *realizes American Idol makes more in brand association and revenue from tying it into CMA Fest every summer* Also ABC: *casts more and more country/country-adjacent contestants since their two most successful alumni have been country* This forum: If people are really bothered by how the show is nowadays, just stop watching. That's what I did when The Voice years ago.

I think that was probably the initial intent post-S18 (as evidenced by how early they did them for S19/S20), but I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to keep waiting until around the finale to prevent another S19 situation.

The endless posts here complaining about country singers outlasting the others (especially last night) are more annoying than the actual country contestants making it far every year.

For S16, it was either just prior to the finale or right after it. It was only the Top 3 who had singles. For S17, they didn't release the singles until after the winner was revealed. I think S18 did the same, but I can't remember. For S19, they released singles for the entire Top 7 shortly after the Top 7 episode aired. For S20, it was the Friday prior to the Top 5 episode. Last season, they did singles for the entire Top 5 but they weren't released until the Friday before the finale. They've stated that they're songs written for the contestants, but that could just be a story they say. (For example, Nicolina's in S20 was a cover, iirc.) The contestants are allowed to be involved in the writing process if they choose. So far, only one coronation single has been entirely written by the contestant themself:

Jack just nodding and walking off stage after he makes it through while everyone else flips out at making it through has become one of my favourite running gags of the season.

You’re severely overestimating Jordin’s popularity nowadays lol. But people need to stop using Kelly and Carrie as the bar for success. Nobody on Idol is ever going to reach those heights coming out of the show. The music industry and landscape has changed far too much. Even Chris Daughtry, who I would say was probably the most well known after Kelly & Carrie, isn’t hitting the same career highs that he was back in the day.

Phil Collins didn’t invent music with the Tarzan soundtrack for this slander!

1. S20 - Liked four of the top five, and the only time on ABC Idol I would’ve been happy with any of the F3 winning. 2. S16 - A mix of happiness that Idol was back and enjoying some of the contestants. 3. S19 - Casey and Chayce are among my all-time favourites so I look back at it fondly, even if I didn’t enjoy the other three. 4. S17 - Boring season but I liked 3 of the Top 5 at the time lol. 5. S18 - Did well given the circumstances, but wasn’t really a fan of doing a Top 5 finale. 6. S21 - Hated the season and didn’t enjoy most of the Top 5. I’d prefer to see how the next two weeks shake out to see if prefer last year’s Top 5, but I don’t see this year’s making it above S18.

Plenty of contributing factors. There’s less viewers, less weeks, multiple people eliminated each night, voting opens at the start of the show, it airs on a different network, etc.
