The Princess Diaries (2001)

Princess diaries ver1.jpg

Ā

I probably should have cut Spider-Man again since that would make more sense as revenge for cutting X2 but like... this was at the top of the list so I just went for it. I also cut the sequel way back in the 500s for this game, so maybe it's fitting that I also escort this one out of the building. When this came out I could have sworn it was a Disney Channel Original Movie. Which is fine, because I loved those. But apparently this was a full theatrical release. I have to be honest and say that I've never seen this. It looks harmless! Fun! I've seen the trailer before and it seems like a typical Disney teen comedy. It is based on a book. Book series? One book? I don't know. Anne and Julie are icons. Two Oscar Winners! But by all the critic/review/rating metrics that I follow, it seems clear that this is on a lower quality level than the vast majority of the remaining films. I think making it to not only the Top 100 but the low 80s is a huge accomplishment, and hopefully that passion for this movie can translate to one or two other Disney movies left in the game that have a better shot at the Top 20 and would make more sense in the finals.

Atonement

Ā

Ā

Iā€™m in bed now but I will make this write-up prettier in the morning. Atonement is romantic war drama released in 2007 starring James McAvoy, Saiorse Ronan, Keira Knightley, and Vanessa Redgrave and Benedict Cumberbatch among others. It involves couple Cecelia and Robbieā€™s lives being torn apart by a rape lie on Brionyā€™s part. An older Briony, played by Vanessa Redgrave, reflects on how she can never atone for this in the end. Vanessa deserved an Oscar for that monologue, but that ending has always left a sour taste in my mouth and while Atonement is a worthy part of the top 100, I am at peace with it leaving now.

I was faced with deciding between two films that I do not care vs. 5 films that I either like or love so I decided to eliminate Disneyā€™s The Incredibles. Ā I believe that Iā€™ve made it clear in the past, notably in the Disney Movie Rankdown, that itā€™s one of the few modern Disney movies that I am not attached to and I also find it to be a tad bit overrated ā€“ I am actually surprised that Dee is the one nominating it considering that he ranked it the highest out of everyone in the Disney Movie Rankdown.Ā  Anyway, the film was released in 2004 and it found great success on the big screen which eventually led to a sequel, a few years later. Ā And while the film is about a family that have super powers, the most known character from the film is certainly Edna Mode, which we could easily refer to one of the most iconic character ever created by Disney Pixar.

FROZEN RIVER (2008)

MV5BMTk2NjMwMDgzNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDY0NDY3MQ@@._V1_.jpg

Ā

Frozen River is a crime drama starring Melissa Leo. She is a struggling mother named Ray whose husband has run off with their money meant for a down payment on a mobile home, leaving her behind with their two sons. Desperate to make ends meet, she gets involved in smuggling illegal immigrants from Canada into the United States by crossing the frozen St. Lawrence River. She teams up with another woman named Lila in this endeavor, which pays $1,200. The operation seems doomed to fail, especially since Lila usually doesn't work with white people. However, she's desperate to get back her baby son that her mother-in-law stole from her. The task is very stressful, and Ray wants to quit after they helped smuggle in a Pakistani couple. She assumed their duffel bag contained explosives, and she leaves it behind in freezing temperatures. It turns out there was a baby in the bag, so they go back to get the duffel bag and luckily the baby turned out to be fine. Ray grudgingly accepts another job since they just need to complete one more job in order to have the amount needed to make the down payment on the mobile home. However, the last job doesn't go as planned, and the whole operation comes crashing down. Ray is sentenced to four months in jail, but the goods news is Lila was able to get her son back. This sounds like a bleak film, so I can't say it's one I'm interested in watching. But Melissa Leo's performance must've been great considering she received a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards for her role in this film. As for what the critics thought of the film, Frozen River has an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads: "Veteran character actress Melissa Leo delivers a stunning performance in this powerful -- if grim -- indie film."

RIP Misty Upham :broken:. I loved her in Frozen River and she wouldā€™ve been a great nomination as well, especially some Indiginous representation. Her story makes me so sad, gone way too soonĀ :(Ā

Yeah even the revelations of abuse after her death just made it all the more sad and I feel like she didnā€™t get to rest peacefully for some time. Just an awful awful situation and I feel for her Tribe as they were done wrong by the local police.

Into the Wild

Ā

Fairly easy choice for me but sadly that means Into The Wild will be cut. It was released 2007 and is a pretty iconic film. It has a strong 83 percent on rotten tomatoes. It is one I think everyone has heard of. You either love it or you hate it, I think. I personally love this movie but I won't be cutting Spider-Man lol

Except learning that Sean Penn directed this... well I did not know that before and this movie is now tainted for me which is unfortunate.Ā  It was nominated for two Golden Globes but no Oscars. This is a good placement for this movie.
