THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2009)

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name. The plot centers on a rich recluse named Henrik Vanger wanting closure on the disappearance of his niece. She disappeared forty years ago, and he suspects a family member is responsible. He invites a journalist named Mikael Blomkvist and a hacker named Lisbeth Salander to his island to investigate all the family secrets in an effort to unmask the killer. I haven't read the book or seen any of the film adaptations. Maybe someday I'll be interested, so I'll avoid spoilers and not read the rest of the Wikipedia plot summary. This adaptation is the Swedish version, whereas the American film was released in 2011. Apparently many fans like this version better as Lisbeth was portrayed as a stronger character, but the cinematography was better in the American version. Anyway, as for what the critics thought, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads: "Its graphic violence and sprawling length will prove too much for some viewers to take, but Noomi Rapace's gripping performance makes The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo an unforgettable viewing experience."

ADAPTATION. (2002)

Adaptation. is a meta comedy-drama film written by Charlie Kauffman. The film is about Kauffman himself (played by Nicolas Cage) as he struggles writing a screenplay of Susan Orlean's (played by Meryl Streep) book The Orchid Thief. He's a very self-conscious and awkward person, unlike his confident twin brother Donald. Charlie and Susan are real people, but Donald is fictitious. Donald decides to become a screenwriter like Charlie, and he manages to write a formulaic thriller that sells for six or seven figures. Charlie continues struggling to adapt The Orchid Thief since he doesn't believe the book has a usable narrative. He wants to meet Orlean herself, and the film goes to unexpected territory with drugs, car chases, and people being held at gunpoint. This seems like an interesting movie, and I guess you have to embrace how meta it is to enjoy it. As for what the critics thought, Adaptation. has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads: "Dizzyingly original, the loopy, multi-layered Adaptation is both funny and thought-provoking." The film was nominated for many prestigious awards, winning Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for Chris Cooper and Best Adapted Screenplay at the BAFTAs for Kauffman.
