The finale sounds like how the rest of the season played out - disappointing.😴

This was supposed to be the big 20th anniversary season, yet only 2 alums are included in the finale - Carrie and Gabby.   Most of the "celebrity" performers have no connection to the show.

Likewise, all the mentor slots and performance slots throughout the season should have been given to alums.

Nigel was the only showrunner of American Idol who had any idea what he was doing, so it's no surprise that this was the way it ended up. He was the competent one.

1) The "Great Idol Reunion" episode featured 5 alumni duets and countless other alumni in attendance, which is more than enough. They don't need to overload the finale with more alumni and make it another S15 where the focus is taken off of the current season's cast.

2) Don't forget all of the Hollywood Week mentors were winners/finalists lol

It depends on what you expected. When "The Great Idol Reunion" was announced I thought the majority of the alums, anniversary celebration, etc. would be on the special. That's why when it could have had more alum appearances, performers, been a longer show, etc. I was disappointed. I understand not everyone could have shown up, but at the very least Idol could have asked alums to film a message to the audience. I knew that the finale was probably not going to be S15 or a anniversary celebration that many fans hoped for because of the people in charge of the show.

20 years of Idol.  1 hr for a Great Idol Reunion was not enough, especially when a lot of people were left out.  Hollywood Week mentor was a disaster.  It was reported that the alum mentoring was greatly edited out.

It's a 3 hr finale.  Lots of time to focus on the current contestants.  But only 2 alums for the 20th anniversary finale?

Yet we get the likes of Deana Carter, Tai Verdes, Flo Rida, Ben Platt.  And recycled performances from the judges.  Just like we got "big stars" like Derrick Hough, Jimmie Allen, Bebe Rexha given solo mentor slots.  And Finneas get a solo when other alums also had new music.

it’s hard to get worked up over the 20th season when:

1) There was a huge celebration when Fox cancelled the show. Most alumni who would return for an anniversary show were there for the ‘farewell” show.

2) For most of the run on ABC, TPTB would insist that it was Season 1 or 2, etc. instead of acknowledging the prior 15 year legacy.

You forget that the goal is to get ratings.  Special appearances and performances by the likes of Vonzell, Maddie Poppe, Just Sam, Kellie Pickler, Blake Lewis and Carly Smithson aren't going to get casual people to watch the show AT ALL.

On the contrary, people may tune in if they hear that Ben Platt, Bebe Rexha, or Flo Rida are performing since they are well known/popular/relevant.

Fritz was going to perform a gutwrenching version of "Dancing in the Dark" with just guitar where he really felt the lyrics of a deep dark depression.  Nicolina was going to sing the Pointer Sisters version of "Fire" where she was really going to play off of the guitar player.
