Winner for Best Foreign Language Movie at the Academy Award in 2012,  "A Seperation" is an Iranian drama film directed & written by Asghar Farhadi.  The movie revolves around an Iranian family when Simin files for divorce from her husband, Nader - the divorce is essentially a results from Simin who wants to leave Iran with her husband and their daughter but Nader refuses to do as he is concerned for his father's health.  As Simin filed for divorce, the couple found themselves in front of the family court where she say the divorce rejected as the reasons for divorce is not sufficient enough to warrant one.  The court decision means that Simin is finding herself living with her parents while her daughter decide to stay with Nader, whom is taking care of his father -  a woman named Razieh is hired to take care of his father, which lead to more problem for the family when Nader's father is found tied to his bed with Razieh nowhere to be found. This lead to Nader accusing Razieh of neglecting his father as well stealing money, which was taken by Simin for her move - things goes from bad to worse when Nader pushes Razieh out of the apartment whom fell on the stairwell. Simin & Nader eventually found out that Razieh suffered a miscarriage which will complicate the relation with Razieh, as Nader could be sentence for murder - this forces to the family to be involved with the judicial system once again. The process to prove if Nader was aware of the pregnancy & responsible for the miscarriage is a long and difficulty one as there's different parties involved in the situation. At the end of the day, we notice the effect of the couple's dispute have on their daughters who eventually have to decide which parents to live with.

It is obvious to see why the movie was well loved and appreciated by many, notably the acting of the cast which include Leila Hatami, Pewyman Mooadi, Shabah Hesseini, Sareh Bayah and Sarina Farhadi.

Having seen the movie at one occasion, I certainly recommend everyone to at least watch it once - writing this write-up made me want to rewatch it as I haven't seen it since its release.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE (2014)

dear-white-people-movie-mister-scandal.g

I nominated this movie because I thought I had seen it and didn't love it...then after more research I realized I watched the first episode of the TV series and not this. Oops. Dear White People is a 2014 comedy-drama film starring the amazing Tessa Thompson. Thompson plays Sam, an Ivy League student at a school with increasingly escalated racial tensions. From what I can tell, the culture war comes to a head when the staff of a humor magazine stages an offensively themed Halloween party. It has pretty great reviews at a 91% score on RT and a 79 on Metacritic. Seems like it handles a really important issue well and provides a great acting vehicle for Tessa Thompson. Unfortunately its time in the rankdown is done but based off of the reviews and general consensus, now is not a bad spot for it to leave.

Congrats everyone on getting below 150 with over 800 films eliminated! Get below 100 and maybe I'll have the patience to add Metacritic scores to the list.

THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011)

BNUW.gif

Ugh, I didn't realize this was a Spanish movie. 😤 Serves me right for not researching either of these movies before nominating them. :haha: The Skin I Live In is a psychological thriller film released in 2011 and starring Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya. I do know Antionio is an incredible actor so I'm sure he's amazing here. This is a movie about...wow that's a complicated premise. Basically a plastic surgeon tries to develop this skin that will save the lives of burn victims...he is doing this to try to bring his wife back to normal after she is horribly burned in a car accident. I guess the movie turns to a bit of thriller/horror based off of what happens when he gives her the new skin? Idk. This sounds really creepy actually, but I got through Midsommar alone lmao so I could do this. Out it goes from the rankdown now!

MOMMY

I've got to be honest, I've literally never even heard of this film. I thought it was Goodnight (Goodbye?) Mommy, which I didn't really care for, so when I looked it up and realized I was wrong, I was like "oh. 😐" But since I've never even heard of it, I'm fine with it going. According to Wikipedia, Mommy is a 2014 drama film from Québec, Canada that was written, directed, edited and produced by Xavier Dolan. Wow, king serving Rob Zombie realness. It stars Anne Dorval, Antoine Olivier Pilon and Suzanne Clément and focuses on a mother who has a violent teenage son in a hypothetical future where parents have the legal option to commit troubled youth to pubic hospitals. The film was unique in that it was shot in an aspect ratio of 1:1 (most films are 1.78/1.85:1, 2.35:1 or the now more commonly used 2:1 aspect ratio) and became a critical & commercial success following its release at Cannes in 2014.

HARRIET

I remember seeing the trailers for Harriet last year and thinking it looked off as a movie about Harriet Tubman. I finally watched it through completely legal means and was left whelmed. There's nothing inherently awful or bad about the film, but as a biopic on Harriet Tubman, I wish it had done more to show just how much of a bad ass she was rather than just being the "biopic by the numbers," as I've seen some reviews refer to it as. Even reading her Wikipedia article and the numerous books about her turned out to be more exciting than this movie. Cynthia Erivo is a fantastic actress in her own right, but I feel like she is let down by the script. All in all, it's a very middle-of-the-road film that's fine, but didn't do Harriet Tubman justice, imo.

Also friendly reminder that she was supposed to be replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill this year, but the Agent Orange administration halted that. 🙂

Cycle 15 ~Battles Part 2~

200.gif

Now that we did the duels, it's time for the battles. This will be the final battle round of the game. You will nominate two movies against each other. The other nine voters will publicly vote on which movie should stay. First movie to get five votes will stay. The other movie is out of here! Only a few cycles left! Is there still fodder you think we need to get rid of, or do you want to make a big move? The choice is yours!

Here is the nominating order:

BmbgmNB.png

@NGM is up first to come up with the first battle! He can post his two films now whenever he's ready and then everyone can begin voting for which movie they'd like to see stay.
