Katy Perry replacement

I suspect Luke and Lionel will leave too and we’ll have all new judges.

Maybe Kane Brown, Lady Gaga, and Ed Sheeran? It’s a bit of an odd choice but I think even Dave Navarro would be a good judge. He’d be honest without being too brutal.

Kane Brown is most likely too young/recent to have the necessary cachet, and it's doubtful ABC would shell out the money necessary for either Lady Gaga or Ed Sheeran.  They were willing to drop a bank vault on Katy Perry in their first season, when everything was new and full of potential, but it's well past those days.  If they clean house, at this point they're probably going to look to reduce costs, not raise them even higher.

Dave Navarro is sort of an interesting prospect, in that he's had a successful career (and just got a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination, after a somewhat infamous history) and has a ton of reality tv experience.  I think that kind of works against him though.  Both Rock Star and Ink Master have a much grittier/adult tone to them than the family-friendly ABC style, and finding past soundbites that would make Disney cringe probably wouldn't be hard.  It's also unclear if he's still part of Ink Master, given he wasn't involved in the last season for the first time, but there's been no official parting of ways.  If he's planning to come back the next season, I doubt for contractual reasons he'd end up on a competing network.

(Dave GROHL on the other hand would be potentially hilarious, and might be willing to do it just for the giggles.  Not sure about that.)

As for who they would choose, the logical formula is someone who brings musical credibility/career longevity (would you believe this was originally Randy Jackson), someone current with at least some big name weight, and a blank-filler to balance personality/genre/gender.  I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to get a past contestant to provide some sense of continuity, although they would most likely have to go in that utility third slot.

If they want an alumnus for more than just the sake of being an Alumnus, the options are pretty limited.  Given Kelly Clarkson's talkshow on a competitor, there's almost no chance there.  Queen are still touring, and that might not be the case for too much longer given both original members are in their mid 70s, so it seems unlikely Adam Lambert would sign on and potentially screw up a last tour opportunity.  Jennifer Hudson might be willing at this point, but I also get the impression she's... not cutthroat, but not a team player, and I'm not sure she has enough current cachet to be the top-paid/star member like Katy/JLo.  I don't see her being willing to play second fiddle.  Ironically, Fantasia might be able to make an argument given her recent visibility from The Color Purple.

A few years ago it would've seemed unthinkable, but could Carrie actually be within the realm of possibility?  She seems to be transitioning somewhat into a less tour-heavy phase of her career with a Vegas residency (which would end about the right time in August), and her sales have been steadily declining while still being reasonably respectable.  She's also been probably the most loyal alum even into the ABC years, so warm feelings about the show could be a factor.  Daughtry would probably be the only other alum with a moderate amount of career longevity to point to, and was willing to go on the Masked Singer so his pride would probably allow it.  Might be borderline.  Beyond those folks, anyone else is pretty much just being slotted in for the Idol history, so you could throw a LOT of people in the mix.  In terms of actually being good judges (which at this point seems like a secondary consideration), David Cook or Melinda Doolittle would probably be assets, and would be reasonably iconic for the series' history.  I'm somewhat skeptical of anyone from Season 9 onward really having the weight of nostalgia to fill that role.

As for non-alums, there so many candidates it's hard to start guessing without someone to play off of so you can narrow the field down.  I would guess they'd want the credibility judge to be more of the tough/mean one, since they'd be less protective of their reputation.  I think this was supposed to be Lionel's role, although that obviously didn't go as planned.  It's possible they'd want ALL sunshine and standing ovations, but a shakeup would let them get a bit more balanced.  Just throwing a random guess out there, Jon Bon Jovi was a very good guest judge way back when, and is a bit more recently active than a lot of possibilities.

Finding someone with enough recent clout to draw attention but not so much as to be out of price range is tough.  Most of the big name recent female pop stars would be way too much, and there aren't that many men to pick from.  Maybe Bruno Mars, since he hasn't released a solo album in the better part of a decade, and Silk Sonic is in a weirdly nebulous side project place.  I could kinda sorta see Chris Stapleton being willing to do it actually.

Carrie/Bruno/Bon Jovi feels like individually feasible, but collectively probably too expensive.  Carrie would probably need to fill the "current name" slot if she was included.

Honestly I could see Lizzo joining for the main pop girlie slot. She has a made for TV persona, Katy suggested she join last year, her voice appeals to all generations, and she is definitely in some need of career rehab after her scandal with her dancers.

I was pretty shocked that Katy made this announcement on Jimmy Kimmel when I was watching her interview. 😮 I thought she would have either posted about it on social media or on Idol.

As for replacements, I haven't thought about that. But there are a number of people I would like to see and look forward to who will be the replacement.

Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and JHud. Make it happen.

Why would any of them want to do Idol - after they have quit The Voice.  Kelly now lives on the East coast.  JHud has her talk show.

Let's get real - there is no way they can afford big names like Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Chris Stapleton.

ABC is calling the shots - I can't see them going with Lizzo - because of the scandal with her dancers.

In terms of alums, Carrie has said she doesn't want to be a judge.  Daughtry would be good, but he and Adam Lambert said they were never asked.  Melinda Doolittle isn't high profile enough.

I mean JHud’s talk show is on the same network with Idol so it could make sense like Kelly did both at the same time.

But you know that became too much for Kelly, who said that instead of saying No, she continued with something that she wasn't happy with.

In terms of J-Hud, her talk show is a higher get than being a judge on Idol.

They can afford to pay the judges. It’s obvious that’s what they’re spending their money on now lol. Katy and Luke both demanded big paychecks and have been getting them for seven seasons. Lady Gaga isn’t even the huge name she used to be. I think it’s reasonable she’d do the show for around 15 million. I know they won’t fork out $25 million for a judge nowadays but I can see $10-15 mil.

Katy hinted about releasing new music and a world tour (or traveling) when she made the announcement on Jimmy Kimmel Live. She always seems game for anything, including dressing up for Disney Night. But she also receives criticism for her judging. There were stories last year that alleged Katy felt producers were editing her as the "nasty" judge. If that's true, TPTB might look for someone willing to be more critical on camera.

I hadn't even thought of Miley Cyrus as a potential replacement for Katy Perry until her name was included in this poll, but, I think she'd be a pretty good replacement for Katy as well, especially since I really thought she did a decent job as a coach on The Voice. I'm also interested to find out what happens with Ryan Seacrest after this upcoming season of American Idol ends. Will he continue to host the show or not, given that he's going to be the new Wheel of Fortune host starting in September?

Well, former American Idol judge Harry Connick, Jr. seems like he doesn't have a problem with being more critical on camera. And maybe Christina Aguilera or Adam Levine if one of them were to be interested in doing another singing show?
