Sherlock Holmes

As much as I hate to cut a film with queen Rachel McAdams in it I must. Sherlock Sherlock Holmes was released in 2009. It starred Robert Downey Jr as Homes and supporting cast members including Jude Law and as I mentioned Rachel McAdams..it was not very liked by critics receiving a 68 percent on rotten tomates but had commercial success which allowed them to make 2 follow up films in later years. Personally, for me, Robert Downey Jr isn't a good as people make him out to be so I think the film was bad. The chemistry was off too. Not understanding how it deserved a sequel.

Up in the Air

Up_in_the_Air_Poster.jpg

The movie I cut initially looks mildly interesting, so Up in the Air will be my casualty this round. Up in the Air's story is centered on traveling corporate "downsizer" Ryan Bingham (George Clooney). An idea from a young, ambitious new co-worker Natalie (played by Anna Kendrick) would put an end to the constant travel of corporate downsizer Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), so he takes her on a tour to demonstrate the importance of face-to-face meetings with those they must fire. Imagine a new co-worker prsenting an idea that would flip company culture upside down. While mentoring Natalie, he arranges hookups with another frequent-flier (played by Vera Farmiga), and his developing feelings for her lead him to see others in a new light. Jason Bateman also has a role. I'm sure the contant travel ended in...eleven years. I love Vera Farmiga but that's not enough to save this movie for me so out it goes.

WOW, look at me cutting a biopic & a country music film - definitely worthy of a breaking news!  Inspired on a novel that was inspired by Hank Thompson, a country & western singer who had a career of more than 70 years, Crazy Heart was released in 2009 where it was written and directed by Scott Cooper.  The film features Jeff Bridges in the lead role - honestly, he gave me Kris Kristoferson vibe in the role, as well as Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Robert Duval, and Jack Nation.  In the movie, Jeff Bridges portrays Otis "Bad" Blake who is an alcoholic country singer who once exprienced fame, but nowadays, he is performing in bars & pubs across the country.  While performing across the country, he meets a young journalist, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, and they eventually begin a relationship which inspires him to get back his life on track, including renewing relationship with former band mates, re-recording music, and getting clean ; It was not easy for him as there was some challenges in the way like any other movies... They eventually break up, he goes to rehab, write a song that becomes a hit, reunites with Jean who is engaged, and film ends with her asking him for another interview.... Anyway, the film was decent but it just didn't do anything for me, but it did for a lot of people as it was an acclaimed film, and Jeff was awarded Best Actor at the Academy Award as well one for Best Original Song for the writers of a song in the film.

AN EDUCATION (2009)

MV5BMTg4NjgzOTc0MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTc2OTE3Mg@@._V1_.jpg

An Education is a coming-of-age film starring Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard. She plays a young schoolgirl named Jenny and he plays an older man named David. Despite the age difference, he pursues a romantic relationship with her. It's a very problematic situation, but the film is meant to be a cautionary tale. It doesn't romanticize this pairing. Jenny gets charmed by David and pretty much throws her life away to be with him. She later finds out that David is already married, and his wife describes him as a serial adulterer. Once Jenny discovers the truth about David, he tells her he'll divorce his wife to be with her. However, one night David drives away and is never seen by Jenny again. Jenny dropped out of school to be with David, even though she had aspirations of attending Oxford. Jenny tries to enroll back in school, but she is initially refused re-admission. One of Jenny's teachers ends up helping her out, and Jenny is able to go back to school. She also manages to get into Oxford too. I guess the writers wanted to end the film on a somewhat positive note instead of outright punishing Jenny for her mistake. Anyway, I'm sure this is a well-done movie, but I can't say it's one that appeals to me. As for what the critics thought, An Education has a 93% approval rating. The consensus reads: "Though the latter part of the film may not appeal to all, An Education is a charming coming-of-age tale powered by the strength of former newcomer Carey Mulligan's standout performance."

Cycle 18 - A Storm Is Coming

last_scene.jpg

You may have noticed a lack of powers in this game so far. That will change very soon. But not quite yet. This cycle is a regular round. When it's your turn to nominate, you will nominate 10 films and everyone else will come and save. But I'll tell you this. Power is coming soon. The sooner you cut and save each round during the cycle, the better it will be for you in the future. Just something to keep in mind during the cycle.

Nominating Order:

@*Diana is up first to nominate ten films. Nothing is immune.

3:10 to Yuma

I had this on my list to nominate soon as it's a western that I've never heard of. Released in 2007 and directed by James Mangold, 3:10 to Yuma involves Outlaw Ben Wade (played by Russell Crowe) terrorizing 1800s Arizona, especially the Southern Railroad, until he is finally captured. The hero of the story Dan Evans (played by Christian Bale), the owner of a drought-stricken ranch, volunteers to escort him to the train so he can be brought to trial. Along the trail, the two form a grudging respedct for each other, but danger looms at every turn, and Ben Wade's men are in pursuit. The film had several nominations and has a very respectable 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but westerns are more my dad's thing and not mine, especially in this set of nominations so out it must go.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (2008)

MV5BMzI4M2I1MTItYjdiYi00YTZhLTg0NDgtZWIzOGU5ZmM3NWZlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyODE5NzE3OTE@._V1_.jpg

I was about to cut The Cat Returns, but then I realized it was a Studio Ghibli film. Even though I haven't seen The Cat Returns yet, I'd still rather not cut a Studio Ghibli film. :haha: Anyway, I have heard of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button before. I haven't seen this film though, but I already have a good idea what it's about. Brad Pitt plays the title character, who somehow ages in reverse. He is born resembling an elderly man and then dies as a little baby. The explanation for this is due to some magical clock that ticks backwards. The film examines his life and his relationship with his love interest played by Cate Blanchett. It's an interesting concept for a film before, and I'm sure there are viewers who wonder what it would be like to have a Benjamin Button kind of life after watching this film. As for what the critics thought, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 71%. The consensus reads: "Curious Case of Benjamin Button is an epic fantasy tale with rich storytelling backed by fantastic performances." The film received 13 nominations at the Academy Awards, which was the most for that year. It won three awards: Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects. Maybe I'll see this film one day and regret this cut, but out it goes from the rankdown now.

The Cat Returns (2002)

A young high school student is laying on the grass looking up at the sky. The film's title and credits appear on the top.

Okay so I have seen The Cat Returns and I can confirm what Tom said about its quality. I recently made a ranking/tier-list of all Ghibli films (including some Ghibli-adjacent films) and Cat Returns placed 17th out of 23 and was in my D-Tier ("Did not enjoy and no interest in rewatch"). It's supposedly a sequel to Whisper of the Heart (ranked 9th on my list) which features the Lofi Girl, made famous by the lofi hip hop radio - beats to sleep/chill to YouTube music streaming channel or whatever. Maybe spinoff is a better way to describe it? The Cat in the movie is kind of featured in passing in the other movie, but now the cat has an entire lore and a magic dimension where if you visit the dimension, you slowly turn into a cat. Whisper of the Heart didn't have much of that fantasy stuff included in it. Anyway I thought the movie was kind of weird but it's still Ghibli and whimsical and I can't say that no one should EVER watch it, but it shouldn't be first on your list. The English voice cast includes Anne Hathaway as the lead, Cary Elwes, Peter Boyle, Elliott Gould, Tim Curry, Judy Greer, Andy Richter, and Kristen Bell. Great cast. meh movie

final destination horror GIF

will upload an actual picture later

There’s no denying that Final Destination 2 is a cult film by now, but unfortunately, at this point of the rankdown, cult movies ain’t enough for me to save them or let them survive any longer when we’ve been losing many good movies who were nominated for Oscars or have good score on RT. It’s obvious that Final Destination 2 ain’t a film that speaks to me but I’ve seen it & it’s nothing spectacular - it’s a sequel to the original film and it features Ali Larter, AJ Cook and Michael Landes. It had a good success at the box office but the reviews weren’t so nice, and it has a score of 48% on RT. Anyway, tough decision must be made and I am making a fairly decision by cutting it from the rankdown.
