Rat Race

I am not okay so I might as well just write this and get it over with. Rat Race feels like the easiest cut because I have nominated it plenty of times it just is always saved.

This is a film with a ensemble cast is based in a Las Vegas casino where a high paying tycoon keeps tracks and entertains the gamblers. Fascinating except not really.

It it only had a 45 percent on rotten tomates which honestly is way too high for such a awful movie. It wasn't even funny which is what most of these types of films atleast attempt to be.

Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah_and_the_Bee_film.jpg

Akeelah and the Bee came out in 2006, so I think it came out too late for when it would have appealed to me (I was on a spelling bee team or two in middle school). Direced by Doug Atchison, it features Akeelah (played by Keke Palmer), an 11-year-old girl living in South Los Angeles, who discovers she has a talent for spelling, which she hopes will take her to the National Spelling Bee. Despite her mother's objections, Akeelah doesn't give up on her goal. She finds help in teacher Dr. Joshua Larabee (played by Laurence Fishburne) and using his help along with overwhelming support from her community, Akeelah tries to make her dream come true. I might enjoy it if I watched it today, but I'm going to save the film I've seen and liked to keep the game moving.

Ajami (2009)

Ajami Arabic.jpg

A lot of movies that I haven't seen, a lot foreign, so time to look at critic scores and see what to get rid of. Should I give weight to Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB? Let's go with IMDB! This is an "israeli arab drama film." Wiki tells me that there are 5 different plots happening in non-chronological order. I'm already feeling better about this cut. So the setting is Tel Aviv and story follows residents... drive-by shooting, illegal employment, a stabbing, interrogations, drug dealers. Okay so this is bleak. I'm not getting very inspired to watch this. But it got special mention at Cannes and a lot of international awards and was nominated for the foreign language Oscar. The movie made it pretty far in the game, seemingly on reputation alone, so that's cool.

5 Centimeters Per Second

I almost changed my cut because I did not feel like writing about a film I know so little about I have no energy but this movie was one of the films I have nominated before and it kept being saved so I felt it was time to take it out while I had the opportunity.

5 Centimeters Per Second is a Japanese film that is a romance. 88 percent on rotten tomatoes so not bad but not great either. It is apparently a tear jerker according to that site idk never seen it or would I care to so I'll take their word for it.

Frost/Nixon

Frost_nixon.jpg

A movie I have seen bits and pieces of, but never the whole thing. Seems like a fair cut in this set of nominations. Frost/Nixon is a film that tells the story of the Frost/Nixon interviews in 1977. Three years after the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency, Richard Nixon (played by Frank Langella) selects British TV personality David Frost (played Michael Sheen) to conduct an interview to be done one-on-one. Nixon believes it will be easy to mislead Frost, and Frost' team doubts that he can stand up to the former president, it ends up eing a candid interview. A movie I would like to see in full one day, but for now it must bid adieu from the rankdown.

Entre les murs, also known as The Class - is a French film that was released in 2008, and it is directed by Laurent Cantet. It is inspired by a novel of the same name that was release in 2006 - it actually got the movie treatment incredibly fast ; It is an autobiographical film of Francois Begaudeau which describes his time as a teacher of the French language and literature in the 20th arrondissement of Paris.  During his time as a teacher, he discusses the struggles he faced as a teacher when it came to the so-called problem children in his class. Even more impressive is that the author of the novel, Francois Begaudeau, portrays the role of the teacher in the film.  I've never seen the film but it has been awarded the Palme D'Or at Cannes in 2008 which is the top prize if you aren't familiar with Cannes ; It was the first French movie to accomplish this since 1987.  It received lots of praises on the award circuit, and have a 95% rating on RT ; Never seen the familiar but knowing that it is a French film, I might be interested in watching it if I am able to finding it but I am cutting it as I had to save Xavier Dolan's I Killed My Mother, another somewhat autobiographical film that had an impact on my life especially as a French-Canadian gay individual.

5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND (2007)

5 Centimeters Per Second is a romantic anthology film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. He is a Japanese filmmaker, and his other credits include The Garden of Words, Weathering With You, and the masterpiece Your Name. 5 Centimeters Per Second is his second feature film. The film is only an hour long, and it's divided into three episodes. The central character is Takaki. In the first episode, we are introduced to his childhood friend and first love Akari. After she moves away, they write letters to each other to stay in touch. Eventually he weathers heavy snow and endures several train delays to visit her. It's a sweet moment in the film, but Takaki has to move away too and the distance between them grows greater. It won't be probable for them to visit each other again. In the second episode, Takaki is now in high school and a classmate of his has fallen in love with him. This episode is more about her feelings for him and how she wants to build up the courage to confess her feelings. Eventually, she realizes Takaki doesn't see her in a romantic way and his focus seems to be something beyond reach that she cannot give him. So, she doesn't confess to him after all. The third episode features Takaki and Akari as adults. They haven't seen each other in years, but they still remember each other. It's a bittersweet ending for the two, and it recalls the opening of the film. The title of the film comes from the first episode. 5 centimeters per second is the speed of falling cherry blossom petals. Akari shares this fact with Takaki when they're children. In the end, it represents how fleeting love and the people that come into your life can end up being. The petals start together, but they eventually drift away from each other.

5 Centimeters Per Second is a beautifully animated film. Just look how gorgeous these visuals are:

The attention to detail put into the artwork is superb, which can be seen throughout Makoto Shinkai's films. Not only is it visually appealing, but the music adds to the emotion of the film too. 5 Centimeters Per Second is a quiet and sad film, but it's engrossing too. Makoto Shinkai really knows how to make films that are both very beautiful and very emotional. I don't know if 5 Centimeters Per Second is a film that would be a favorite to everyone, especially due to the ending. Nonetheless, I still believe it's worth watching. I personally prefer Your Name. and Weathering With You out of Makoto Shinkai's filmography so far, but I enjoyed 5 Centimeters Per Second too. I was pleasantly surprised this film managed to last this long in the rankdown since I'm unsure how many people here have seen it. It's disappointing to see it be eliminated, but at least it made it this far.

HUNGER (2008)

MV5BOWY5YTNkOTMtNmE2NC00ODhlLWJiYzEtYThhYWU2MjQ1MmNmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjU0OTQ0OTY@._V1_.jpg

I watched the trailers for the remaining two films. They both seem to be well-made, and both have high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. But if I had to choose one to watch, then I would choose A Prophet. It just seemed more interesting to me, so that's why I've chosen to eliminate Hunger. Released in 2008, Hunger stars Michael Fassbender as Bobby Sands, a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army. Based on a true story, the film is set in 1981 in Northern Ireland while Sands led a hunger strike in Maze Prison. The prisoners were protesting against the removal of their Special Category Status. Their demands included the right to not wear prison uniform and not do prison work, as well as receiving a weekly visit, letter, and parcel per week. They wanted to be considered political prisoners instead of criminals. The hunger strike ended up gaining media attention, and Sands died after 66 days on the hunger strike. He became a martyr as a result, which resulted in rioting in Northern Ireland days after his death. I can't say I'm interested in watching this film. I'm sure it's done very well, especially with all the critical acclaim it received. It just seems like a hard watch though. There are prisoners getting beaten, and then they starve themselves to death. As for what the critics thought, Hunger has a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads: "Unflinching, uncompromising, vivid and vital, Steve McQueen's challenging debut is not for the faint hearted, but it's still a richly rewarding retelling of troubled times."
