It didn’t even end up making it to her next album, which is sad, because it’s gone on to become one of her most iconic songs. This just oozes with charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. If I knew this song was about me I’d be running to her door with all my life savings, haha. This is Rihanna at her most badass. I absolutely love the Johnny Cash (actually technically Geoff Mack) sample, it’s so obvious but melodically it allows her to jump into that booming chorus seamlessly. This song is straight up club techno and I never thought a song like that would be one of my favorite Rihanna songs but here we are. (I’d probably have this song #7 overall, behind What’s My Name and Fire Bomb) Her vocal performance here is almost desperate, which is cool because we’re usually used to hearing more chill, almost disinterested Rihanna vocally. The build up from the verses to the chorus is everything, and yeah I mean obviously the chorus is the best part of the song. I think this has one of the best climaxes of any of Rih’s hit singles. So yeah it’s no surprise this song made it all the way to #1 as it was made for both the radio and the clubs. Just an outstanding song from Rihanna and this has always been one of my faves.
