THOUGHTS ON SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

Survivor.australia.logo.png

Not gonna lie, The Australian Outback is the season I most fondly remember. So many great memories of watching this season with family and absolutely adoring most of the cast. I was really anticipating this rewatch. Now that it's finished, I gotta be honest. The Australian Outback is really boring. There is probably the least entertainment per episode of any season that I have watched thus far. And it's so strange that my memories of the season are so fond, but I guess that nostalgia is one hell of a drug. Because it's almost difficult to make it through this season.

Maybe I feel so negatively about this season since I am fresh-off the iconic Borneo. There is a strong story told on Borneo and an extremely dark tone that makes viewing the season a truly unique experience. Each character tells a particular story on Borneo, and the actions and consequences of these characters really created the legacy that is this series today. The themes of allegiance, betrayal, separation of game and personal identity, acknowledgement of one's actions, all resonate so strongly throughout the 39 days spent on Borneo.

The Australian Outback feels like a competition between people trying to win the title of "Nicest Person," rather than "Sole Survivor." On the one hand, this makes for a nice and easy viewing experience. The entire post-merge group sans Jerri is an extremely likable one. Every single post-merge finalist, particularly the Final Five feels like a group of people all worthy of the million-dollar prize. On the other hand, this makes finishing the longest season in Survivor history a long and tedious task. The group gets along! All of the time! Which is nice sometimes, but very boring most of the time. With the blindside of Jerri, the season becomes completely non-confrontational. Even before her boot, nobody was providing entertainment, besides Jerri. There were a few spats here and there, but overall, this season literally feels like a bunch of friends hanging out at summer camp.

The positive side to this friendliness is that we do get a pretty deep look into the characters and their interpersonal relationships. I feel like a lot of that is missing in the later, more hyper-competitive and hyper-strategic seasons. Truly a likable cast, so it seems fitting that we get to spend a lot of time with them as people.

My issue is that The Australian Outback fails to capitalize on the amazing start provided by Borneo. Instead of continuing to carry the torch and expand on the stories being told by the cast of Borneo, this second season feels like the antithesis of Borneo. LOL. While the contestants feel far more prepared for this being a game, the stakes never feel very high? And I think that's because nobody had any real strategy besides vote out the least likable individual? Or the individual that caused them to lose on any given day? Everybody got along, which just does not make for great television. Unfortunately.

The Australian Outback only seems to pick up on what Borneo brought in terms of making alliances. Tina/Colby/Keith/Amber/Jerri making the alliance over on Okagor, with Tina/Colby/Keith making a sub-alliance is probably the most interesting way the game evolves in this second season. Especially come time for the merge when both Okagor and Kucha are concerned with the coming into the merge with the numbers, and concealing the players with the most votes accumulated thus far. This is maybe when the game peaks, and then starts to decline again as Okagor just decides to pick off Kucha one-by-one, until they don't. The blindsides of Jerri and Amber are great moments, but no bigger than the blindside of Gretchen on Borneo. At least there did seem to be thought put into longevity in the game.

The most interesting aspect of The Australian Outback is likely just how grueling it was for this cast to survive. This particular group of contestants were wrecked by nature. Severely wrecked. To have their camp wrecked, then moved, then having to sacrifice coverings in order to get more food, only to have their camp destroyed again. I do not know if I have seen a group of finalists so drained before. The survival aspect of The Australian Outback is top notch.

Tina is a good winner, but not a great one. I used to think she was top tier, but I think I have to change my mind on that this time around. Did she run circles around mostly everybody strategically? Absolutely. But I cannot give her too much credit, since the accident with Mike is really the only reason she even had a chance at winning. After that point, the Okagor tribe did not need to worry too much after the crucial vote against Varner. Was Tina critical in blindsiding Jerri and Amber? Yes. Were Jerri or Amber ever winning the money? No. They were also not winning immunities and were at the bottom of the totem pole. And Colby made the worst decision of all-time in taking her to the finals, since Tina was actually the most likable on a season where most cast members valued being genuine, kind, etc.

*Ranking this cast was very difficult. I moved everybody around (besides Jerri) a lot of times, and still do not necessarily feel comfortable with this final standings. But I am leaving this be for now because I have thought about this for way too long. LOL.*

CAST RANKING

1. Jerri Manthey - Do I even need to explain this to any of you? LOL. An icon. The original "villain." But not a villain in the regular sense of the word. Complex. Hilarious. Iconic. Jerri Manthey is the reason to watch The Australian Outback.

2. Kimmi Kappenberg - Fight me, but Kimmi is a hilarious oddball. Obnoxious as hell. From that first night in the shelter, you can just tell that Kimmi is going to rub everybody the wrong way. Kimmi tried to convince everybody to leave the chickens alone, and eat the eggs for more protein. Kimmi had to deal with eating the worm, despite being a long-time vegetarian. Kimmi fought with Alicia because she just could not let the issues with the chickens go. LOL. I laughed at Kimmi, and that is more than I can say for most people this season.

3. Colby Donaldson - The moral strategist who lost himself the entire competition because he could not bare to bring Keith to the finals. LOL. That alone makes him one of the only compelling characters on the show, but the entire season is centered on Colby. He is the narrator of the season and is meant to be the relatable hero. Colby has this funny one-sided relationship with Jerri. Well, one-sided eventually. Colby played the game masterfully. His winning streak was pretty intimidating. A lot of the season is focused on Colby and only Colby, since he spent so much time alone due to winning so many rewards. I just think the consequences of him picking Tina for the finals really lend to the legacy of Survivor. Colby tried to be a hero until the very last moment, and though he considered the possibility of Tina beating him, I think his dominance in the competition clouded his judgment. His loss is proof that the person you would expect to win, might just not win. He was overcome by the unassuming Tina, who had to navigate her spot more than he did, since he was safe for nearly all of the competition post-merge.

4. Tina Wesson - Probably a controversial decision. The strongest strategical player of the season. Fact. Aided by circumstance rather than controlling the game? Fact. That does not mean Tina was not the ferocious, feisty, hard-edged, sweet, innocent contestant we all know her to be. But Tina was far less iconic than I remember her being? Not to say she was lacking in wonderful moments while on the show - turning on Mad Dog, forming the strongest alliance of the season, contributing to the blindside of Jerri and Amber, jumping in that flood/rapid to save the rice, standing on the log for over ten hours, etc. But none of these moments are particularly iconic or indicative of a legend? I think we got to know Tina as a person very well over the course of the season, and you can talk a lot about how sweet she was, and how dedicated she was to playing a commendable game. Her focus on being a moralist, but abandoning the morals when need be. Tina is a solid winner, just not an incredible winner when revisiting her 42 day experience. Rootable? Yes. Iconic? Maybe not as much as I once thought.

5. Elisabeth Filarski-Hasselbeck - F*ck her IRL, but her character on the show is still this genuinely awesome person that you wish had never changed. Or maybe you wish she had never revealed her true self. LOL. But Elisabeth was part of the awesome duo with Rodger. Genuinely was a positive force throughout the entire experience. Why do I have her this high? I think Elisabeth was far more driven to flip Okagor than the edit would let on. Not to say that her relationships that she formed with Okagor post-merge were insincere, but I think Elisabeth knew that her only shot in the competition was to flip people through her kindness. And it kind of worked? Elisabeth was the last-standing Kucha and advanced all the way to the Final Four.

6. Alicia Calaway - Badass. That is the best way to describe Alicia. Her fight with Kimmi over the chickens is the highlight of the season. "I will ALWAYS wave my finger in your face." "I'm tired of you and the f*cking chicken!" LOL. I think she was such a physical specimen and had a cool personality, even if she came at Kimmi very harshly. I would have loved to see her last longer on this season, but she definitely has all the ingredients of an ideal Survivor player.

7. Rodger Bingham - Very, very lovable. The friendship between him and Elisabeth is one of the most compelling parts of the season? A very awesome duo (personal feelings set aside for my assessment of Elisabeth "The View" Hasselbeck). Like a broken record, I will say that Rodger is an awesome guy, but not an exciting or an entertaining character. Though I will say that I think he and Elisabeth had the final two snatched up if Kucha had won the numbers game.

8. Keith Famie - He sparred with Jerri, which makes him one of the more interesting people this season. The feud between the two is fun, even though childish. Keith has a pretty obnoxious attitude about him, but he also seemed very harmless. But he had plenty of memorable moments and played a solid strategic game that led him to the Final Three.

9. Jeff Varner - Default placement. But Varner gave really snarky confessionals and sh*t-talked the horrid Skupin, so he earns a spot this high for those reasons alone. Again, not a very integral part of the season, and his elimination is more important than he is to understanding the game that was played this season.

10. Maralyn Hershey - Mad Dog! Three episode gem. LOL.

11. Amber Brkich-Marino - Too low? Maybe. But her first appearance is boring. Just like Nick, we really only get to know Amber because she lasted so long in the competition? Not due to personal strengths, but just because she was part of the right alliance. Which kudos. Amber is sweet, quiet, unassuming. Her most interesting moment is realizing that her ass is on the chopping block after Jerri leaves the competition. IDK. Very sweet, but uninteresting. She is more interesting for being eliminated in a blindside. "Meatball Sub" is her best moment. Easily.

12. Nick Brown - Despite making the final seven, Nick contributed absolutely nothing to the season. Nick is very dry, which led to some comedic moments. But the only reason he even received airtime was due to his being part of Kucha + the Skupin fire accident.

13. Debb Eaton - Honestly, Debb had a really funny one episode. She was delusional and bossy and loud and obnoxious. But this season needed that energy. She tried to build a shelter out of rocks. Period.

14. Mitchell Olson - Just not very interesting? I think his elimination is probably a big moment in the history of Survivor, since strategy now needs to account for votes against an individual. But Mitchell was not value added to the season.

15. Kel Gleason - #BeefJerkyGate. Maybe that event should earn Kel a higher ranking, but I found him really uncomfortable and awkward to watch. Not in a fun way. The whole throwing darts at Jerri's picture is also not very entertaining. Whatever.

16. Mike Skupin - Disgusting, vile, piece of sh*t that can f*ck all the way off. And to think he is one of the more compelling contestants. He's sick and I hope he rots.

Linda is such a hilarious character on Africa. :dead:

All the talk of African gods and goddesses not being happy with the discord on the team, and sending the immunity idol to find peace. LOL.

"Lindsey, I guess you're not that strong." :lmao:

The reason everyone is so nice in Australia is because of the reception Richard’s win got. At the time, people hated him and thought he ruined what the show was supposed to be, so in S2, everyone was trying to make sure they came across like angels.

Tina was savage af though. She did a lot of scheming off camera and used the moral dilemmas everyone had to get the votes to go her way.

Colby was my favourite (obviously), and I still maintain him advancing with Tina was the better option. Did he lose the title? Yes. Did he easily make back that million dollars in endorsements and appearances after the season wrapped because of how he came across by choosing Tina? Also yes.

Varner was one of my favourites in S2, too. Shame he turned out to be such a sh*tty person later on.

Glad you gave Australia a low ranking. It's iconic as the most popular season of Survivor ever (which is why nearly the whole cast returns at some point) but after Jerri gets booted the show is absolute torture. Specifically having single eliminations till the final three made for one of the most boring finales ever. Two hours of three people yikes.

This.

I love the pre-merge, but the last third of the season is a bore.

I believe that. Funny how the tables have turned over time and most people respect Richard for how he played the game.

It is definitely apparent that she was doing a ton of scheming and behind-the-scenes work, which I wish they had showed.

I still think he could have had his cake and ate it too. He knew he was losing the moment he picked Tina, which just...blows my mind. LOL. Imagine your whole storyline being about your dedication to winning, only to do the exact opposite when given the opportunity.

I am interested in seeing how this unfolds.

Seriously. So. Boring.

It's very strange because I always knew Australia to be considered iconic and popular, but the rewatch made me question why I ever loved it. LOL. I mostly attribute it to that sophomore shine that often happens for television shows.

Also there are so many iconic cast members that even if the season itself is super boring, you can’t bring yourself to look back at Jerri, Colby, Tina, Amber etc’s first season with negative thoughts haha

THOUGHTS ON SURVIVOR: AFRICA

Survivor.africa.logo.png

Africa is not a bad season. Africa is not a great season. There is a definite improvement from The Australian Outback to Africa, and I think that has more to do with the cast than anything else. Though still not the most exciting season to watch, Africa at least had a cast that somewhat seemed to recognize they were filming a television show? My biggest issue with The Australian Outback is how boring the season becomes after Jerri is eliminated. Africa retains some of the most entertaining cast members of the season well beyond the point of Jerri's elimination the season prior. That definitely helps. In addition, you had cast members like Kelly, Lex, Brandon, Linda, Tom, Lindsey, Silas, Teresa, and Frank that all were giving energy to the season, whether good or bad energy. Likable or unlikable. The Australian Outback was played by a likable group of zombies. LOL. So the cast is definitely a step-up.

Why do I keep comparing Africa to The Australian Outback? Because Africa is only marginally an improvement imo. The seasons actually play out nearly identically?

Similarities in season outcomes:

1) 5:5 Boran/Samburu ratio at the merge = 5:5 Kucha/Okagor ratio at the merge (I guess in reality Africa had a 6:4 ratio since the tribe-swap happened)

2) The core Boran alliance just picks away at Samburu, leaving the two most well-liked of the tribe for last

3) Ethan/Kim J. as the final two is way, way, way too similar to Tina/Colby.

4) The location is not the "typical" location for a season of Survivor. Most of the focus of the season is just how badly ravaged the entire cast is by the landscape.

Africa did not depart much from its predecessor, which ultimately hurts this season. The cast is definitely superior, but the gameplay and outcomes are far too similar to be too excited by anything that happens? I think producers tried to prevent this from happening by introducing the tribe-swap. The tribe-swap definitely impacted the game - T-Bird voting for Lex, Lex convincing Brandon to flip and betray OG Samburu, Lex thinking Kelly voted for him which leads to her blindside, planting seeds that caused the dissolution of the bond between Lex and Tom.

The tribe-swap definitely impacted the game, but not enough for my liking. Brandon basically got himself evicted really quickly by being a traitor, the core Boran alliance was never going to break apart, T-Bird was never going to penetrate the group, etc.

On to the winner: Ethan is an absolutely horrible winner. Yikes. Ethan is handsome, well-spoken, kind. But Ethan is just a so-so player that happened to be in the right alliance, never really called any of the shots, was not entertaining to watch, not a physical threat like you wanted him to be, etc.

But there were some very entertaining moments. Lindsey being emotionally unstable and a complete b*tch. The generational war that occurred on the original Samburu. Linda being an absolute nutcase, but amazing for television. Lex playing a very aggressive game. Kelly being a wild individual. Tom and Frank being absolutely ignorant individuals. Most of the contestants showed up to play a game, which was a significant step up for the series. There is stuff to love about Africa, but just not enough?

One thing I will say about this season: the rewards are incredible. Honestly. So many beautiful moments came via the rewards.

CAST RANKING

1. Kelly Goldsmith - Every single confessional is incredible. Her quoting The Graduate during Final Tribal Council. IDC if this is too high, Kelly had an iconic personality, and it's a damn shame that we did not get to see more of her. So quirky, b*tchy, and intelligent. I loved her rivalry with Lex. I loved her wearing the Shameless t-shirt. I loved that she claimed her talent is "manipulating men." UGH. Queen.

2. Lex van den Berghe - The best player of the season. Without a doubt. An interesting character. Competition beast. Much of the season is told by his narration, especially considering a big part of this season were the incredible rewards that he kept winning. I loved that despite his tough, take-no-prisoners demeanor, Lex was very clearly loved by most and had such a sweet side to him. The most interesting part of the season were his interpersonal relationships, watching him strategize, etc. Almost every shot called in the game came from Lex's mouth and mind. He drove me crazy, but he also felt like the most endearing individual.

3. Teresa Cooper - T-Bird is such an awesome individual. Queen of the Fakeout Votes. Queen of the Mile High Club. Queen of Singing. I think she played as strong of a game as she possibly could. I am glad that the tribe-swap happened solely because T-Bird was able to survive. What an awesome human being on the show, what a strategic player, what a badass competitor. She gave some of my favorite moments. Her chasing the chicken, singing and then eventually winning the endurance challenge, having to be convinced to share fried chicken with Kim J., revealing her vote for Lex to Lex in order to break up the majority alliance. Just awesome.

4. Brandon Quinton - Catty, b*tchy, rude, ridiculous. Brandon had many a memorable moment. Is he likable? Not really. LOL. Though I cannot deny that Brandon was sort of a compelling character. He quickly joined forces with the Youth Alliance and sore up and down that these people would be his friends for life. Until the tribe-swap, when he quickly decided to abandon this Youth Alliance and boldly betray them. After the friendship necklaces, after acting like a pr*ck, after going back-and-forth with Frank. LOL. But at least he has compelling moments, and his chaotic actions shaped the entire course of the game. His quick friendship with Lex caused the Clarence elimination, the Kelly blindside, the mistrust between Lex and Big Tom, the entire fall of Smaburu. Brandon really set the game into motion from the way I view things. I at least appreciate that he tried to make-up with Kim P., but found his intentions to be shady. Brandon was a catty gay in the confessionals, which at least made listening to what he had to say interesting. He had that brilliant moment with Frank during the reward challenge + subsequent reward. Gotta love the way he stayed catty until the end and decided to give Kim J. the vote. At least he was consistent. LOL.

5. Linda Spencer - I needed more Linda Spencer. I needed as much Linda Spencer as possible. Between her drinking the blood like a maniac, her drama with the Youth Alliance, her almost scary behavior when dealing with Lindsey, her absolutely refusing to help the Youth Alliance out with the votes. Linda provided the best moments of the season for me. Should she be ranked this high? The answer is yes.

6. Frank Garrison - Too militant. Really ignorant. Yet somehow iconic? I really do not feel like Frank had enough camera-time for us to see the side of him that his tribe mates did, since nearly the entire cast complained about his overall attitude, demeanor, etc. for the entire season. However, what  we did see of Frank did confirm that he was, in fact, a sourpuss. But also a completely hilarious addition to the season? Frank complained about people not working enough for his liking. Frank complained about how long women take to get ready. Frank complained about Brandon. A lot. The rivalry between Frank and Brandon is pretty interesting, and I still do not know why they dislike each other so much. I assume it's due to culture clashes. Frank at least had that cool moment when he was forced to compete with Brandon, and they win. Then they have to spend a night together, which leads to maybe one of the more touching moments that I have watched on this show. You also have to laugh at Frank randomly hanging on for a few weeks, and then deciding to attempt to save himself? He starts to appreciate the sunrise? He starts to talk to people? Except his talk of politics essentially turns everybody off and they send him home finally? He was so unintentionally hilarious. "I've never broken the honor of a hand shake." "The American branch, it's called freedom."  :dead:

7. Clarence Black - #CherryGate. #BeansGate. Clarence maybe made some mistakes, but he was also really funny along the way. Clarence also turned out to be a way better guy than people tried to portray him to be. I loved him trying to talk T-Bird out of the endurance challenge, and then is politicking out in the open when realizing that T-Bird was going to win. There was also not enough of him in his underwear. Those scenes were amazing. LOL. Not an amazing character, but he at least contributed drama to the season and had a solid redemption arc.

8. Lindsey Richter - The tick biting her ass. LOLOLOL. Lindsey was a complete and total mess. The friendship necklaces. The constant whining and complaining. Being manipulative and letting the older members of Samburu do all of the work. Her insanely hilarious interactions with Linda. Not letting Jeff finish the tiebreaker at tribal before trying to run away and leave. Her emotionally laughing at herself when she has to reveal what everybody already knew - she had multiple votes against her because she sucks. She ranks this high just because she was definitely value added before her elimination. :lmao:

9. Kim Johnson - Sweet, lovable, rootable. Kim J. obviously played a solid game by linking up with the boisterous men and allowing them to take all the heat for the decision. Then suddenly turning into a comp beast for the last two immunity challenges (controversy set aside for the quiz challenge). I think Kim J. did an awesome job accurately clocking people in confessionals. But like Ethan, Kim J. was simply boring until her heroic sweep of the last two immunity challenges. I also feel bad because I do not think Kim J. deserved to lose to Ethan. She was at her best when she was coming for Big Tom during Final Tribal Council. I needed more of that throughout the season.

10. Ethan Zohn -  SUE ME. FIGHT ME. Ethan is super f*ckable, super nice, super hot, intelligent, sweet. But he is boring. So completely boring. Ethan never controlled the game. Ethan hardly called the shots, except for maybe questioning the inclusion of Brandon in the alliance. But everybody was doing that anyways. I really fell like his most significant moment in the season is him going to the village with Lex to barter the goats. Ethan only won a single immunity. I am struggling to come up with things to write about Ethan. I don't even think he deserved the win over Kim Johnson. Sure, he was part of the majority alliance. But Lex and Tom were clearly playing the game for him, and he admitted to being carried. And in the end, he won for being a man. Plain and simple. Change my mind. Lol. He also revealed some low-key homophobia, which ran rampant in the cast of Africa, with his dismissal of Brandon as a guy. Just saying.

11. Kim Powers - Kim P. is sweet. Genuinely sweet. I think we learn about her as a person over the course of the season. She called off her wedding at the last minute. She unexpectedly lost her older brother and Lex has an eerie resemblance to him. I was really touched/annoyed by her hurt after Brandon betrayed her. She is very clearly a loyal individual with her heart on her sleeve, so watching her struggle with the idea of voting him off or looking like an idiot for keeping him was quite compelling. I just really liked Kim P., even if she did not add much to the season overall. Since she did not add much to the season though, and was part of the really annoying Youth Alliance on Samburu, she ranks pretty low. This is not me disliking her, just assessing her importance to the season.

12. Carl Bilancione - LOL @ him revealing he drives both a Mercedes + Porsche. What a dummy.

13. Jessie Camacho - I just felt bad for Jessie. She did not want to drink the water, eat food. She just seemed miserable.

14. Diane Ogden - LOL @ her dying in the first challenge and then exposing Clarence during #BeansGate.

15. Tom Buchanan - I might catch heat for this, but he was too ignorant, homophobic, misogynistic, and perverted for me to at all entertain ranking him highly. There is a lot to his character, so maybe I should rank him higher. But openly bragging about being "just a man" and peaking at women far younger than him as he bathes them, the word "queer" leaving his mouth way too many times, etc. just made me disgusted with him. His Final Tribal Council speech against Kim J. was just the icing on the cake. Big character, many memorable moments, strong gameplay. But just too icky for me to care.

16. Silas Gaither - Silas had potential as a villain, but I think he may have been too dumb to realize how poorly he was playing the game? He was openly snakey. I still crack up at Silas coming back to the Samburu tribe, claiming that alliances will stop. Only to have a group huddle + inspirational speech with the Youth Alliance right afterwards?! I think he had the makings of a good villain, but the tribe swap completely decimated his chances in the competition. Truly a victim of circumstance.  He's a rapist.

I'm guessing you don't know about S*las?

There were moments that I absolutely loves, but I think the intense similarity to Australia and boring players advancing to the end really hurt this season.

No. Ugh. Hit me with how horrible of a person he is so that my perceptions of him can be prove correct.

LOL edited my post. Thank you for informing me, I'll probably need help with outside info on most contestants. This info was not even on the Wiki page.

I'll do my best. The Survivor Wikia is usually pretty up-to-date on happenings, though.

I haven't ventured onto the Survivor Wikia because Wikipedia is easier to navigate without spoiling myself too much. I might just go look at the Survivor Wikia for a season that I have seen and see if it's better to use/not spoiler heavy.
