Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Two sporty girls hugging.

I have a soft spot for this movie mostly because it introduced the world to Parminder Nagra. After this she joined the cast of ER and was a main cast member from Season 10 to the final season 15. I loooooved Neela on ER, she was probably my favorite to watch after Abby and was my main reason for tuning in while the show had its... special late season plotlines and weird moments lol. Reminder that ER seasons 1-8 is the best and 9-15 is... still enjoyable to me but more soap operay and dramatic, like how I imagine Grey's Anatomy is or whatever. What are we talking about again? Oh yeah, Parminder made her mainstream debut with this film alongside Keira Knightley. This movie is about how the two leads want to become professional football (AKA soccer) players, but their families are not supportive. It got pretty decent reviews but isn't a super groundbreaking or iconic movie IMO. A lot of the plot is about the main character's Indian Sikh upbringing while living in London. Culture issues play a big role here. It actually got a golden globe nomination for best film (comedy) and some other nominations at international film stuff. Won a GLAAD award as well

Inspired by a 1955 novel of the same name, this rendition in 2002 follows the original film in 1958, and it stars Michael Caine who received a Best Actor nomination as well as Brendan Fraser. The film takes place during the Viêt Nam war and it follows Pyle who is the lead character of the film, and his moral culpability in being involved in the terrorist actions against the French government and the Viet Minh. There was controversy surrounding its release mainly due to the timing after 9/11 and therefor it got postponed an entire year, and it went on to receive positive reviews and getting nominations at the Academy Awards.

The Italian Job (2003)

First things first, one of the main things I remember about this movie are the insane biceps and the mini coopers. Apparently this is a remake of some British movie in the 60s which I had no idea about. Mark Wahlberg is the lead alongside Charlize Theron and Edward Norton. This got a pretty decent reception from critics. It is a fun action movie, and y'all know that I enjoy those a lot. Just a fun popcorn movie, nothing to overthink, action scenes, sexy people, lots of fun. But if we're comparing heist films then Ocean's 11 takes it every single time for me. I'm glad I got here to save one of my faves

Casino Royale

These nominations are the worst so far in this game, but unfortunately Casino Royale makes for the easiest cut in this set as I have only seen one James Bond movie and this is not it. Casino Royale was released in 2006 was directed by Ian Campbell, and stars Daniel Craig in his first appearance as Jams Bond, along with Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi Dench, and Jeffrey Wright. The film's premise involves Bond on assignment to bankrupt a terrorist financier Le Chiffre's organization (played y Mikkelsen) in a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro after receiving a license to kill after uncovering a link to his organization in Madagascar. Can't keep this safe among this set of noms so out it goes.

BILLY ELLIOT (2000)

I'm not cutting Fantasia 2000, Gladiator, or Zombieland. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was almost saved, and I'm guessing Final Destination is a top favorite of one of the rankers here. So, Billy Elliot is the only film I'm left with, but sorry to any fans. Billy Elliot tells the story of a young boy with dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. Initially taking boxing classes at his father's behest, Billy stumbles upon a ballet class at the same gym. Billy secretly takes ballet lessons, even after his father forbids it. Billy's teacher believes in his talent and helps him continue learning ballet. Billy's talent is undeniable, and his dad eventually comes around to the idea of him pursuing ballet and applying to the Royal Ballet School. Funding the application is tricky since Billy's father and brother are coal miners on strike. However, the neighborhood helps raise money for Billy to make the trip to London to audition. And coincidentally, Billy's acceptance to the school occurs at the same time as the end of the strike. The film ends with a flash forward to the future. Billy is 25-years-old and his father is very proud and overcome with emotion as Billy is set to perform in a production of Swan Lake. Thank you to Wikipedia for the plot summary. Anyway, this seems like a heartwarming coming-of-age story, and I'm sure the performances are great. Billy Elliot received numerous awards nominations, including three at the Academy Awards. Jamie Bell, who plays the titular character, won the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role. As for what the critics thought, Billy Elliot has an 85% approval rating. The consensus reads: "Billy Elliot is a charming movie that can evoke both laughter and tears."

Oh look, it's another epic historical drama film that I am cutting - all of those movies truly morphs into one for me, and I could never be bothered to watch any of them.  This time, I am cutting Gladiator, which I believe I have nominated in the past or was that another one ? Who knows! Back to it now, it was released in 2000 while being directed by Ridley Scott, and released by DreamWorks & Universal. The film had two major names in Russell Crowe  and Joaquin Phoenix, supported by the likes of Connie Nielsen, Ralk Moller, Oliver Reed, Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, John Shrapnel, Richard Harris, and Tommy Flanagan.  The movie is inspired by a novel entitled Those About To Die, and it revolves around Maximum Decimus Meridius, a Roman general, being betrayed by Commodus, the ambitious son of an Emperor, who murders his father to take the throne... Maximus eventually becomes gladiator after being reduced to slavery and he rises through the ranks to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor.  The film was successfull in the year 2000, with praises for Russel Crowe & Joaquin Phoenix's acting - Russell Crowe won Best Actor at the Academy, as well the film as a whole which was awarded Best Picture; The category that year wasn't too exciting and oops at me cutting another movie that was nominated for Best Picture that year. Anyway, it's a movie I've never cared to really dive into and it felt like an appropriate cut when it was left right there.

Zombieland

Zombieland-poster.jpg

As the biggest horror stan in this rankdown aside from Elliott, I'd like to see the Final Destination franchise last a little longer, so that means we mut say goodbye to Zombieland. I'm surprised Diana nominated something with Emma Stone in it after her comments yesterday in the Acting rankdown :giggle:but it is what it is. Columbus (played by Jesse Eisenberg who excels in these kind of roles) is a nerdy college student  has survived the plague that has turned mankind into flesh-devouring zombies because he’s scared of just about everything. He partners with no-fear Tallahassee (played by Woody Harrelson) to try and see if his parents have survived the apocalypse. They meet con artist sisters Wichita and Little Rock (played by Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) along the way and take shelter in Bull Murray's house. The best parts of the film include the long list of rules Columbus comes up with to survive as well as his narration. I really like it but I prefer Final Destination over it.

A Mighty Heart (2007)

Mighty heartmp.jpg

I feel like I've nominated this movie a lot, not because of any huge vendetta but because it has one of the more "meh" rankings for critics in a year with a ton of movies left in the game. If I was to pretend to have a vendetta about this film, it would be because Angelia Jolie is the lead playing Mariane Pearl, who is of Afro-Chinese-Cuban Dutch-Jewish descent. Mrs. Pearl notably said she had no problem with Angelina playing her because Angelina understood the motive behind the movie. However, Mrs. Pearl did say that watching the movie was weird because it wasn't totally accurate. Anyway, the movie is about the search to find journalist Daniel Pearl after he was kidnapped in Pakistan. A colleague of Mr. Pearl said that Mr. Pearl would have hated the movie because it was too dramatic or something. Let me tell you. If I ever get kidnapped and get my head chopped off by crazy people, you have my full permission to make whatever kind of dramatic movie you want about my death. Go crazy. Make me seem like a hero. Make them seem like villains. Give the proceeds to my family. The Daniel Pearl story is messed up.
