Okay, so I wanted first to get home and hear Kaylee vs. Elizabeth on a better set of headphones than the ones for my phone, before formulating my thoughts. Now that I've heard the performance optimally about a dozen or so times, yeah, like many others, this is now my favorite battle of the season. I've so far only thumbed up 3 S24 battles on YT: 1. Kaylee/Elizabeth 2. Tanner/Lennon 3. BIAS/Jacquie. Those are as of now my 3 favs, in that order.  Some thoughts on this battle then:

- Since no one mentioned this: Niall straight up dissed Olivia by declaring the battle version the best he'd heard of the song, bar none. I disagree!  After hearing the battle X # of times, I went back to Olivia's version to better understand the  composition of the original, and to compare how the girls chose to map the song vs. the songwriter. In doing so, I actually gained a ton of respect for the original.  IMO (and this may be unpop), the original is still far and away the best version of the song. Also, compositionally, the song is deceptively complex. And for the record, no, I'm not an Olivia stan.

- Based on the BAs, Kaylee and Elizabeth were both in my Top 5.  I thought Kaylee delivered one of the most technically accomplished BAs of the season, along with Chechi.  Elizabeth I felt was more of an unpolished gem, but tone, power and potential was evident. But more than that, I think her Paramore song choice was my fav BA song choice of the season = taste. Perfectly matched her aesthetic too = taste!  I don't think any other early contestant this season had a clearer artistic vision coming in than Elizabeth.

- "Traitor" is very much Olivia channeling Paramore. It's sort of Paramore-light, if you will.  Therefore, it wouldn't be a stretch to conclude the song choice favored Elizabeth.  Perhaps, but if anything, I feel John was simply giving Elizabeth a fighting chance, given Kaylee's technical superiority.  On the plus side, I think having a relatively current popular hit under their respective belts is a boon for both contestants.

- As for the battle, I agree with most of you that Elizabeth shaded it (stronger emotional connection/more tonal color/more standout moments) for about the first 70% or so of the performance, but that they were both strong throughout, almost neck to neck as it were, with Kaylee finally pulling out the stops and emerging the stronger on the backend.

- Elizabeth's highlight for me was the lilting scoop on "even" during her first verse, which earned the first audible applause of the battle. That for me was her artistry encapsulated in one perfect moment.

- Kaylee's for me was her resounding glory note (noticeably stronger than Elizabeth's prior) at 2:08 thereabouts, expertly resolved with an exquisite little run. That was her vocal mastery encapsulated in one perfect moment in this battle.

- Maybe unpop, but I reckon Elizabeth just about won this, by a tick (will the app meter agree?).  I feel the song was a solid choice, and fit both voices well enough.  I just think Elizabeth mapped the song better, just a little more to my liking. For more of the song, she did more with the song.  I needed a little more of what Kaylee did at the end, earlier. I think the battle was hers to lose, so maybe she played it a little too safe for the most part?  Unlike many of you though, I thought her opening lines were unfortunately the weakest part of her performance.  Her enunciation was a tad off, and it blunted the opening rhyme: "eyes and" // "lies yeah", which she sang as "eyes an" // "lies yah".  This may sound nitpicky, but it kind of bothered me enough that I had to refer to the original for comparison, and there was enough of an appreciable difference in enjoyment of the lyric and the rhyme scheme between the two for me. Just to highlight that I'm not picking on an isolated occurrence, it happens again the next line, when  she sings "I play dum" (in Southeast Asia, this is an actual board game, akin to checkers🙂) instead of "I played dumb", and then a little later in the pre-chorus, she sings what to me sounds like "caught id quits" instead of "called it quits".  All this is easily correctable of course, she just needs to punch up her ending consonants a little more, and to better differentiate between her plosive "D"s and "T"s ("duh!" vs.""tuh!").  John Legend is an English major, but I'm not sure how much these types of enunciation issues actually bother him.  I did not notice similar issues in her BA (or at least they were not nearly as pronounced; I'll need to re-listen), so I'm assuming someone corrected her in the past, perhaps a vocal coach. I just hope this does not turn out to be a factor in the next round.

Omg the essay

Idk if anyone posted this, but these are from Jacquie's story.

Apparently, there were battle partners who didn't respect each others opinions, fought, and did not want to rehearse with one another. She said her and BIAS got along well tho.

Jacquie said as soon as her and BIAS went into rehearsals, it was evident that Gwen had a special connection with BIAS. She said she cried after the rehearsal because she knew in her heart that BIAS was going to win.

(finally some food!)

I get good vibes from Jacquie and BIAS, so no surprise there. Definitely one of the best battles so far.

i'm telling ya, i think its Rachele vs Mac based on the vibe Reba gave and just got that vibe  based off their energy

It could also explain why their approaches to their Battle song were so wildly different.

They probably won’t but it’ll be interesting to see if we get any pairings coming up that are clearly a bit chaotic :haha:

I think Usher and Adam are the only ones that have called out their own contestants for something on professionalism with a battle? Although the details were fuzzy there.

I think on the battle of Jacquie vs BIAS there were clearly no real winner/loser as obviously the other was gonna get stolen. I can see them both reach SF/Finale.

Tonight

J - Elizabeth vs Kaylee - Traitor by Olivia Rodrigo

G - Joslynn vs RUDI - My Immortal by Evanescence

G - Claire vs Jenna - Flowers by Miley Cyrus

R - Al vs Ruby - Jolene by Dolly Parton

Hmm. . . . There may not be two John Battles tonight, or they both would've been listed.  I think it's a Battle each for John and Reba, and two each for Gwen and Niall.
