A completely entrancing, engrossing experience. This film is art of the highest form and certainly the best re-imagining that I can think of to be quite honest. From top to bottom this film is incredibly made. The choreography from Damien Jalet is godly. The score Thom Yorke is haunting. The change in cinematography from typical giallo primary color work to the bleak darkness of this remake is an incredibly smart choice. The film's exploration of motherhood, matriarchies, guilt, evil and particularly of authoritarian power (especially that of Nazi Germany) - so incredibly deep and thought-provoking. Suspiria is polarizing, but I find myself on the side of those who adore this movie.

I made it about 3/4 of the way into the movie and finally had to turn it off. I had to pause and rewind like three times before then because I kept getting distracted, the plot or characters weren't drawing me in at all. Then I started getting disgusted and decided I'm not gonna put myself through the rest of the movie :dead:

A really relatable and fun rom-com. Not one of the best films of 2018, but a surprisingly great one that ranks above films that I feel like robbed superior movies.

It was cute for what it is. Lana Condor is charming as hell and completely elevates the movie. I've never understood the Noah Centineo appeal, but I get it now (though he's a terrible actor, saved by being in the same movie as the awful neighbor character who manages to be an even worse actor).

Considering that Elliott knowingly cut Midsommar in 2019, the cut The Favorite + Annihilation in one swoop, I should not even rank this film here. At all. But I love JLC in this move enough to give it tenth.

This was my first Halloween movie since the original. I actually enjoyed it and found it to be pretty fun, though not all that scary. I couldn't tell if these teens were supposed to be popular or not. I feel like they were, but nothing they said or did made them deserving of being popular lol. And why did the boyfriend just completely disappear from the movie after he may or may not have cheated on her :dead:. Anyways, obvious last place is obvious #Justice4TheFavourite

I must confess this is the only movie I didn't get around to seeing 🙈. I can't watch a non-English movie as background watching since I have to read subtitles. I was busy watching Squid Game instead and reading those subtitles lol.

The only film on the list I have not seen, so this is sort of a default ranking. I did not have the time to watch the movie.

Amazing. Just truly a moving piece of film. There was so much heart and soul put into every aspect of this film. Obviously Regina King deserves the world, but also shoutout to KiKi Layne, Stephan James, and Brian Tyree Henry who were flawless as well. And yes, it's the superior Barry Jenkins film and I am sticking with that!

Regina King. Enough said.

Easily the most underrated movie of the year, idk why it never got the appreciation it deserves. The technical aspects of the movie were brilliant and Ryan Gosling really delivered one of his best performances to date. Maybe I'm just too much of a hoe for Damien Chazelle and I'll just praise everything he touches lol. But idc, I loved this.

Dee

Quote

Absolutely boring in every sense of the word. Ryan Gosling alone is no reason to bring this to the finals.

It was good. Not one of the top 15 movies of the year. We don't need every single Avengers movie in the top 15, we really don't. Glad Black Panther deservingly reigned supreme here.

Dee

Pretty good, a lot of fun as usual, but compare this to fellow finalist Black Panther. There is a huge difference in quality.

A very good take on an old formula. Lady Gaga makes the film though and her performance is pretty incredible all-around. Just not the most exciting film.

Alex

Quote

I did tank this a little bit fearing it would be a threat, but clearly my read was off. If I ranked it honestly, it would've only been 9th or 10th though for me. I think it's a good but not great movie. I'm not mad with its spot here in the endgame, but it wasn't a movie that really stuck with me after I saw it.

There are some very fair criticisms of the casting of this film, noting the lack of inclusion of non-Chinese Singaporean ethnic groups + bi-racial casting choices rather than fully Chinese actors. That being said, this rom-com drama film is amazing and does a lot in the way of highlighting the commercial + social power of Asian acting and storytelling that is all-too-ignored in mainstream Hollywood, of course. Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh are juggernaut performers in this movie. Just pure rom-com fun of the highest quality.

Alex

Quote

I do love seeing a mainstream romcom with an all Asian cast. Representation matters! There's very few romcoms I'm crazy about in general. So I liked it for what it is, but I just don't love the movie in general.

Derek

Quote

this is a very average romcom with above average cinematography
