Sonic Advance (GBA; 2001)

Sonic Advance is the first Sonic game to be released on a Nintendo platform, and was produced in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the series. The first of three games of this Sonic the Hedgehog series, the story follows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy on another quest to stop Dr. Eggman and collect the Seven Chaos Emeralds. Players are able to select only one of the four characters to finish the game, each character coming with its own unique special abilities.

Sonic Advance marks the first games of the series to be produced Dimps Corporation, a third party software developer, after the failures of the Sega Dreamcast console. Dimps would continue to produce games for the series all the way until 2013, and maybe to the benefit and continued survival of the series. Sonic home console titles were continuously either failing in quality, sales, or both. However, these handheld titles produced by Dimps really succeeded in a huge way.

That's mainly because titles like Sonic Advance retained the original spirit of the quick-paced side-scrollers that originated on the Sega Genesis. Sonic Advance combines all of the gorgeous and detailed scenery, eye-capturing animations, awesome music, and cool character models with the convenience of handheld playability. The game does not do much in the way of revamping the series, but an awesome nostalgic game it is.

The game received mostly critical acclaim, with some reviewers criticizing the over-reliance on nostalgia, the lack of game polish, and difficult special stages. However, the game is one of the best-selling titles released for the GBA. 1.21 million copies = $36 million in the US. That is awesome for a handheld title. The game is definitely an awesome game and one of my favorite handheld titles ever. I am happy to see the game has come so far in the Rankdown.
