Good performances, but extremely boring movie. I am also not a Jane Austen fan.

Alex

Picture this. The year is 1995. You just got a job adapting a Jane Austen novel! You are on a film set working with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Collette, Alan Cumming, and Ewan McGregor. Could Oscar glory be in your future? You get a night off. You decide to go out to the movies with your date. "Two to Clueless please" you tell the worker at the movie theater...

The next day you return to your work at Emma, put Ewan McGregor's five dollar wig on his head, and longingly stare out the window knowing you're about to create the least interesting Emma adaptation of the decade.

They had me in the first half, not gonna lie. I think kidnapping movies are so delightfully scary. Then it turned into a generic zombie movie and I was out.

Not my favorite Robert Rodriguez film. A really fun action-horror flick though with an iconic performance from Salma Hayek.

I respect Mission: Impossible for being kinda thee iconic action film. That doesn't mean I particularly care for the franchise. Action movies have to be really good for me to be in and this just doesn't do it for me.

Dee

Quote

Tom Cruise can choke. Never cared for the movies much anyways, despite my father making me watch them relentlessly growing up.

The titular song is actually a jam though. The unedited director's cut is actually really good and makes this such a better movie. Still like it a lot in general though. Tom Everett Scott oozes movie star charisma and I wish he was bigger. Liv Tyler blows her big monologue, but I still love her. The scene where they hear themselves on the radio is genuinely one of my favorite scenes ever?

Dee

Quote

Charming movie, great cast, some good music. But a movie that never impressed me much.

Christopher Guest is such a comedic inspiration for me. Best in Show is one of my favorite movies ever. This is no Best in Show, but it still completely slaps. Parker Posey completely steals the movie, every line reading from her is perfection. Also the deleted scene of her audition is essential viewing

"AND WHO'S ON TOP AND WHO'S ON BOTTOM NOW!?"

Dee

Quote

Christopher Guest is always gonna do it for me. The mockumentary just works for me. Par for the course with a Guest film, we have goofball characters played brilliantly by the likes of Parker Posey, Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Bob Balaban, Larry Miller, Michael Hitchcock, and of course, Guest himself.

I am a Laura Linney fan first and foremost. Not the greatest movie ever made, but this film is loaded with fantastic performances that elevate this from above most procedural dramas.

Alex

Quote

Kind of a generic courtroom drama elevated by a strong cast. Alfre Woodard is so underrated here. I don't love all of Edward Norton's choices, but it was still a daring and shocking performance. Laura Linney always dominates. Richard Gere is always handsome.

I can appreciate the commercial success and large scale of the movie, the legacy it created, and the harmless fun of the film itself. But I just find it really boring and the plot/characters very thin.

Undoubtably one of my favorite movies of the decade. Unflinchingly honest and real. I have not stopped thinking about that baby scene since the first time I watched it. Also one of my favorite movie endings ever. And an instantly iconic soundtrack all in a tight 90 minutes!

Dee

Quote

One of the most notable films of the 90's without a doubt. And certainly one of the most impactful and influential. A pretty brilliant movie that is certainly problematic in parts, but it is also a very stylish depiction of the emptiness and horrors of drug addiction.

Ranking the Top 5 is actually quite difficult because all six of these films are all-time favorites of mine. I have returned to all of these films numerous times over multiple decades. One of the greatest films of the decade and a culturally impactful story that featured four incredible performances from four Black women as the leads. Queen Latifah as Cleo, Jada Pinkett Smith as Stony, Vivica Fox as Frankie, and Kimberly Elise as T.T., really comprise one of my favorite ensembles ever. Incredible characters and cast. And a phenomenal soundtrack in addition. I am prepared to criticize folks for tanking it.

Alex

Quote

Ahead of its time in some ways and a bit behind in others. What I thought might be a generic action movie at the start ended up having a lot of heart thanks to some strong writing and fantastic performances from a great ensemble. This was a first watch for me and I'm definitely glad I checked it out.

Ranking the Top 5 is actually quite difficult because all six of these films are all-time favorites of mine. I have returned to all of these films numerous times over multiple decades. I burnt out my VHS copy of Space Jam because that is how often I watched it as a child. A movie so near-and-dear to my heart.

Alex

Quote

I knew how strong nostalgia has been in these 90's games so I had to tank this a bit knowing it could win. It's a fun movie that I grew up loving, but it's simply not better than more than half the movies in this final 15.

Fargo is one of the greatest films ever made imo. The Coen Brothers + regional Minnesota accents + Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson = perfection.

Alex

Could Fargo be considered a comfort movie? Well it is for me. The Coen Brothers' masterpiece imo. No notes, just a pitch perfect movie.

I knew the mouse's reign of terror would come to an unfortunate screeching halt here with what would have been its most deserving victory. Hunchback of Notre Dame is so daring and so subversive that I can't believe Disney put it out. Not having Quasimodo end up with the heroine? Portraying a Catholic priest as an ultra creepy villain? Such shocking and amazing moves for them to make. Hellfire and God Help the Outcasts are masterpieces, but Bells of Notre Dame is possibly my favorite Disney song ever.

Dee

pretty out-of-the-box and dark for Disney but I cannot willingly sign off on another Disney win
