The previous ABC Idol seasons contestants have said the producers tell them to write a list of songs they want to sing during the show. They will try to get them cleared. As long as there isn't a theme week, previous contestants have said they got songs that were on their list. Maybe it's not the first song on their list, but the one's that have talked about song choices have said songs were on their list they performed.
