If you notice many of the songs that do well on TikTok, get added to the Hot Country playlist quickly. Russell's new song also already made the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles (these are the next 25 songs on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100). Getting on that chart very early usually is a sign of a big hit (Ex. ERNEST ft. Morgan single, Cody Johnson, etc.), media buzz (especially TikTok), &/or an A-list artist. Russell has a good TikTok/social media engagement following. I'm not surprised this happened. TikTok is influencing songs into becoming hits, charting, gaining fans, & new artists getting label deals. All these factors probably led to Spotify & other streaming platforms looking at these songs as "buzz" singles & adding them quickly to big playlists. It's been happening to other genres & the country charts more lately. It's probably also a reason labels are encouraging their artists to engage fans on social media (especially TikTok) & even hiring staff to help them. FYI: Streaming & getting good playlisting does cost money. Pushing a song to radio costs a lot of money, too. It's one of the reasons why some artists have said their labels concentrate money on streaming than other aspects including radio. Big Machine does this for Danielle Bradbery who is on the Spotify Hot Country playlist. Her label recently in Billboard said they are pushing her streaming presence, but not necessarily courting radio. Lauren Alaina said that her streaming (good playlisting from the label) is helping her release new music (since many artists now don't have great sales). I wouldn't be surprised if due to her good streaming, if that also leads to her label "not trying as hard" for radio. There are songs that get on the Spotify Hot Country playlist & a good amount aren't official singles (like I assume with this new Russell song). A good amount of those songs don't chart well on radio or not pushed at all to radio. I already said that about Danielle. There are other songs such as Madeline Edwards, Mickey Guyton, etc. which I would be surprised if they do well on radio. However, I think a big factor will be what is his next single to get to the next level. DS is moving faster than any of his previous singles & that momentum needs to be capitalized on. I mean a fast moving single is great, but if the next single goes back to a 50+ climbing week that hits #1 I don't think that's good. Sure, it's another #1, but A-listers become that way because of how fast they climb the charts. I have no idea what should be the next single, but it will be very important to Scotty's momentum. IMO other artists such as Cody Johnson, Carly Pearce, etc. are in the same boat as Scotty in terms of next singles. They all have current singles which were fast climbing which wasn't normal for any of them. They all need to pick the right single to capitalize for any to start to make the next level on radio. SPOTIFY On the upside, Damn Strait's streaming numbers are currently increasing -- regardless of the playlists involved. On the downside, since Scotty's buddy stepped down as Spotify's (Country) playlist curator, Scotty has had a difficult time getting on and/or staying on the Hot Country playlist -- a problem that only Scotty's label can remediate. Why? There's a quid pro quo involved with this playlist (and others) and it's past time for TT to get out their proverbial check book. Btw, it's important to remember that Spotify comprises only 32% of the streaming market and we really have no idea how Scotty's doing on the other services OTHER THAN Damn Strait's 'hot shot' debut on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart this past Tuesday -- a pretty good indicator! BL, Damn Strait will absolutely unequivocally become Scotty's 5th straight #1 and in record time no less (at least for Scotty). I'd say that's something to be VERY happy about... And oh yeah, both 'You Time' and 'Damn Strait' will be certified Gold soon enough. I'd say that's something to be VERY happy about... And oh yeah, both 'You Time' and 'Damn Strait' will be certified Gold soon enough. And in the case of Damn Strait, a platinum certification is also likely! Thanks for this comforting post.
