Unfortunately, there are very, very, very few independent radio stations anymore, i.e., stations that have the ability to produce their own playlists. Instead, the VAST majority of stations (90%+), receive their playlists from 'suits' in Nashville -- and these playlists are mandatory! Sigh. However, they need to see that not everyone in their broadcast area is fine with that. I bug XTU because they are one of the worst stations I know of for limiting their song list to about 15 artists (if that). Obviously after 120 adds on week one I think a lot of us (me included) got very excited that this chart run could be a little different, but the reality is there are very few artists that go up the charts at will (regardless of how good or bad their songs are). He is simply not one of those artists and that's ok. Many artists are struggling and it's even worse now that several artists are allowed to have multiple songs on the charts at the same time. He is still in what I call the breaker zone, but close to getting out of it. Think of the waves at the ocean. You have to get past the breakers before the water gets calmer. If you don't get past the breakers they push you back and you try again. Same with radio. You have to get into the top 30 before things smooth out. It used to be mid 30's. The A list artists are able to have a huge week and jump in front of you if you are in the 30's. It knocks you back and then you have to climb again to get back where you were. Once inside the top 30 he will get extra spins and I think will be beyond the reach of those new songs having a great first week and jumping in front of his song. Radio has always had their favorites and nothing is going to change that. Enjoy CIAS and what is to come behind that one.
