The Idol contract previously was based on how many albums were released as long as the artist stayed on the label. Kelly's was 7 albums. Carrie & Chris Daughtry had a similar contract, but it was 6 albums. Both of them left their labels after the 6th album with their original label. The # of albums was known because there was a minor who had signed the original contract & the contract was public record. It's also why there was speculation from the industry & fans when each of the mentioned Idol alums finished their "required # of albums" that they would leave the label which they all did. As far as I know, both Carrie & Daughtry had their certifications regularly updated while on the label. But maybe it was Kelly's relationship with the label that was the problem. Kelly was actually involved in a law suit with RCA/Sony at one point...primarily because of Clive Davis. All of the previously mentioned alums were all under 19. Kelly & the others took a long time getting out of the 19 recording contract which was about # of albums. The previously mentioned minor that had their contract become public record wasn't a winner either. From what I remember many years ago looking at the contract, the difference between the winner's contract & others were $, contractual obligations such as appearances, bigger advances, etc. BTW, do you think we need to move this to the off topic thread?
