Finally sat down and got to writing out my thoughts about this last week's dances! I thought this was the oddest scoring week of the season so far and Shayne hitting the bottom 2 really surprised me, especially because I thought he was one of the better dancers out of the middle-of-the-pack couples this year. I'm hoping he can stick around for a little longer because I'm really enjoying him thus far 1. Tasha & Aljaž - Charleston: I mean, come on. She's such a juggernaut it's not even funny. My literal only complaint here is that this was such an odd song for a Charleston lol. She has so much precision, character, and just an understanding of technical nuance that people never exhibit on these shows. Like, this was almost an AJ Odudu level Charleston. Beautiful work! 39/40 2. Montell & Johannes - Viennese Waltz: FINALLY This was the breakout moment I've been waiting for from Montell and I'm so happy it came at this time. She's probably the most graceful dancer on this year and it really shone through with this routine (Jojo's VWs are always just so clean and pretty)! Amazing footwork, great hold, really beautiful turns and just such a strong dance from her. My only criticism is that I feel she had some stiffness to her body and her face, which does work for this style, but I think it could've really skyrocketed with some more fluidity and dimension. Still, excellent. Also, baffled that this scored lower than Wynne and Jamie! Ridiculous! 36/40 3. JB & Amy - Rumba: Another solid dance from JB (and lowkey an underscored one)! I think he beautifully sold the character of the dance and had some really great technique to go with it. I thought some of the Rumba posing needed smoother transitions on his end, as there was some stop-go moments in his dancing whereas Amy's was clearly more fluid. Even then, it wasn't that glaring of an issue to me. My favorite from him thus far! 33/40 4. Shayne & Nancy - Cha-Cha: Such a huge improvement for his Latin, like this is leagues better than the Samba. This was just suchhhh a joyful dance to me His footwork is so strong lately, and this was super fun, but my issue with him not fully performing (visibly counting, kinda just straight-faced for some passages) is still there. Agree about his arm placements not fully sticking as well. But I'm still rooting for him! 30/40 5. Jamie & Michelle - Salsa: Who the hell costumed this... cargo shorts for a Salsa is CRAZY Anyway, I love Jamie, but he's still got these messy edges to his dancing that I want him to iron out. He's one of my favorite males this year, and even with my bias I found this overscored? The lifts and tricks were especially messy to me with pretty noticeable mistakes, almost like there's some weight placement or leg placement that needs to be fixed. Still, his energy is insanely infectious and I think he's such a joy to watch. And the good parts were really good (like 9 level imo), so I think this had the bones of an excellent Salsa, but the mistakes were just pretty glaring to me. 30/40 6. Sam & Nikita - Samba: I enjoyed this from Sam, but it also left me feeling kind of conflicted...? I agree with Wally that these Samba rolls were not the best and that the routine got awkward / lost some steam near the end. But, at the same time, I actually thought the footwork was really strong and some of her cleanest dancing thus far. She seemed to be having fun for a lot of it, and I just really connected with this one in spite of the mistakes! 29/40 7. Wynne & Katya - Tango: His best so far. I don't think I'm really loving him as much as the judges are because I, like Jamie's, found this crazy overscored, though I agree about it being his best. His technique is at its best here and I liked his characterization, but he still has these rough edges to his limbs & extensions that really didn't work for how sharp Tangos are supposed to be. I think he also had the same issue as Shayne did this week with the facial expressions at times, I could see him fall out of the performance and thinking his way through the steps. But there was still a strength to this dance and his demeanor that I really enjoyed, so I'm rooting for his improvement. 29/40 8. Chris & Dianne - Salsa: I enjoyed this one a lot from Chris! This is absolutely the most fun routine from him and the most he's performed so far. There were definitely some clear foot missteps and sync issues throughout the course of the routine but Dianne gave him a hard routine and I think he executed it much better than I would've expected him to. He did really well with the sheer amount of lifts (and hard lifts, at that!) which I think also really kept the fluidity of the dance intact even in his messier sections. Agree with the general sentiment that he's quickly becoming a top winner contender. 28/40 9. Pete & Jowita - Quickstep: Quite the improvement from whatever the hell he had going on last week Much more graceful and in-tune with Jowita and just a really vast technical improvement here I will say though, he has this tendency to over-attack his moves and it creates these awkward poses or stomps in his dancing that honestly make me giggle (but also take me out of the dance lol), and while it was lessened this week, it was still there. He's improving though. 27/40 10. Sarah & Vito - Foxtrot: Not my favorite from Sarah here, unfortunately. It was quite hesitant and stop-go for me, thought I do think her turns are some of the best on this cast and she has some beautiful legwork when it's at its best. I did love the emotion of the dance and how she was performing it, especially with how pretty this song is! Sadly, though, it just felt under par from her standard in the competition at this point, and not as great as a lot of other dances this week. A noticeable step down. 26/40 11. Dr. Punam & Gorka - Jive: Ohhh Punam After such a strong week last week, I was sad to see how nervous she was throughout a lot of this routine. She had quite a few visible mistakes in there and I think she had this anxious stiffness to her that really made the dance feel wonky. I think the judges were a bit harsh on her because this was definitely better than Nick's, and I think she was really trying to put on a great performance, but yeah this wasn't a great week for her. I hope she can bounce back next week. 22/40 12. Paul & Karen - Quickstep: Hmm I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this one. I think my issue is actually more the choreography, there really wasn't much hold so there wasn't much true Quickstep for me to say whether or not he's good in hold...? I think this was more elegant than usual for him, but still quite choppy and he seemed to not really be with the music for a lot of the routine. I can commend the grace he had this go around, but there wasn't much connection with Karen and he didn't really keep up in my opinion. 22/40 13. Nick & Luba - Charleston: I really do feel for Nick with his injury, and I know it's obviously affecting his ability, but this one was just not very good. The first half was much better than the rest, but even that was rather stiff and by the numbers for me. He seemed to really lose steam and the end of the routine and he didn't seem to be really in the dance at all. I'm sad for him, but it was his time to go (and I hope he can heal well!). 18/40
