I think we are seeing one of the most strategic contestants ever to be on the show with Wendy. I have a feeling she’s going to pull some tricks out of her sleeveΒ

The only problem with being strategic is that Wendy wasn't familiar with The Voice. She's talked about studying singers and working hard for the opportunities that came along. So I assume she is approaching this the same way and learning what it takes to win the competition. Wendy is certainly capable of it, but she can't afford to have bad weeks. I've known all along that it's going to be tough to beat GNT. I hope Wendy does, because she's paid her dues for years.

New to the board, been lurking for a while and am not even sure why I'm putting my measly cent in.

    Β

It seems to be that the assumption about Ariana's voting block is that it's a solid one who'll just gun for whomever she signals. To some extent this is true -- a lot were prepared to save Ryleigh, at least on Twitter it seemed like. But there definitely are factions within that block who believe it's talent who should go through, and not simply because of their coach, even if that coach is Ariana. Gymani brought it. Ryleigh didn't, and also brought a song that looked like she was pandering to the Arianators, which some seemed to be put off by. I did see a lot of Ariana's fans apologizing as they switched over to Gymani because they acknowledged she had the best performance of the IS (the same way they also clicked to save Hailey aside from Bella and Vaughn).

    Β

I do also think it's true that SM stats have no bearing whatsoever on the voting power of those who already watch the show. Especially since coaches like Ariana/Miley/Nick aren't long-time fixtures like Blake/Kelly are, there's no reason for fans to invest themselves that much. Another factor is as many others have stated: Holly, Bella and Ryleigh were dubbed the holy trinity, but Bella was the most popular one among the Ariana fans, while Holly has her own base.

    Β

I understand there usually are some surprise results but patterns so far seem to hold true. And Ariana's fans, even if they represent voting power to some degree, don't appear to be sold on voting just because it's Team Ariana. Plenty even appear mad about J&S making it through since they don't think they're up to par with the rest of the competition.

    Β

    Β

Very happy for Gymani, though. She brought it and she shouldn't have even been there in the B3. Hope she gets better results next week.

    Welcome!

    I don’t think 207 of 164k people disliking a video tells us much.Β

Right. It is a small sampling. But having the most dislikes out of 13 performances still isn't what you want to see.

She is in a bit of a tough position indeed. She's polarizing all around.

    Β

I've seen quite a few comments across SM saying that she has been underwhelming on her past two performances, because she showed restraint instead of going all out.Β

    Β

And of course, many, also across SM, are turned off by the fact that she already is a professional.

    Β

I agree, she should just go with a big ballad. Her KO had great stats, which means that despite the negativity of the comments, people were listening.

Unfortunately, Wendy has the professional complaints no matter what she does, the screamer comments when she goes big, the underwhelming comments when she doesn't, and the emotional disconnect complaints.

    Β

It also seems that Wendy's let the negative comments get into her head to the point it's affecting her performances. I think Blue Bayou would've been fine if the ending hadn't gone slightly off-course.

    Β

I agree thatΒ Wendy should pick a big ballad or a beloved country classicβ€”one where she really connects with the lyrics. Come up with a good arrangement and then just go for it without worrying about the negativity or about Lana still being in the competition. She has the ability and enough time to turn things around.

Not good news for Wendy that she has more dislikes than anyone.

No, and Wendy's certainly wasn't the worst performance of the 13. Granted the ending got a little messy, but the rest was good. Still, it's a small sampling and she should be fine tonight.

It was dedicated to her high school teacher.Β

Yes, I found the answer to my question when reading the various recaps late last night. Dr. Hedgeman is the teacher I mentioned as a possibility for Wendy's dedication.

    Β

    https://www.angelfire.com/tn/LePremier/hedgeman.html

In the 1940 federal census, Lulah (2) was living in Memphis with her father (45) and mother (36) and siblings AB Jr. (13), George (11), Gwendolyn (9), Babbra Ann (7), and David (5).

    Β

Dr. Lulah Mae McEwen Hedgeman apparently made an impact on her students and the school prior to her death on 12/08/97 at age 59.

    Β

    according to Wikipedia:

Overton High School was declared a performing arts high school in 1976. The late Dr. Lulah M. Hedgeman was selected as choir director in 1976 and within five years grew the program from 25 students to a choir of 150 students. Under her direction, the choir performed a full concert in 1988 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The choirs were invited to Nice, France four times as guests of the city. Dr. Hedgeman was honored by the Walt Disney company in 1990 in their first production of The Salute to the American Teacher Awards. The Overton Choirs program, under the direction of Dr. Hedgeman, ranked number 1 in the state of Tennessee for 21 consecutive years until Dr. Hedgeman's death in December 1997. The Vocal Music Department at Overton is still ranked the number 1 performing arts high school choir in the city of Memphis as of April 2016.

  10. The Action News 5 staff published a reminder at 4:18 p.m. CST on 11/15/21:

    Β

Wendy Moten and her incredible voice continues to represent Memphis and Nashville on The Voice.

    Β

A member of Team Blake, Moten has made it to the live "playoffs" on NBC's singing competition.

    Β

Fans have another chance to catch her tonight at 7 p.m. central time as the competition continues.

Man, it's really going to be a blow to our collective hearts if Wendy Moten doesn't win this whole thing. This is a much subtler version of Wendy, but even "subtle" with Wendy means there are some pretty amazing moments throughout (plus that final note? Come on). Coach Blake just loves that these smaller things Wendy does are being noted and appreciated. Finesse is being celebrated here and Blake is into it. Ariana simply "can't believe [Wendy's] as big of a secret as [she is]." "What do you say about that?" she asks when it comes time to "critique" Wendy's performance. It's not the most emotionally stirring, but Wendy remains such a pro.Β Okay, VoiceΒ gods, how about a Wendy Moten-Gymani final? Wouldn't that be something?

    Β

The VoiceΒ season 21 live shows continued on Monday with some show-stopping performances, and none more surprising than the one from Team Blake's standout singer Wendy Moten! Wendy's turned in show-stopping performances since her Blind Audition, but she toned things down for her Top 13 performance of Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou," wowing the coaches with her softened control and dynamic range.

    Β

Ariana Grande was stunned nearly speechless when it came time to give her feedback, marveling at Wendy's obvious star potential. "I know you've been doing this professionally your whole life, but I can't believe that you're as big a secret as you are," she raved. "The fact that we are here for this moment with you is an incredible privilege."

    Β

Wendy's coach, Blake Shelton, agreed, noting how much he enjoys watching his fellow coaches' reactions to the lifelong backup singer's mastery of the smallest technical details, "all the little things that don't get celebrated enough, 'cause we're kind of groomed to expect people to come in and blow the roof off." "Which you can do, and will do again, but what you just did there had so much finesse," he told Wendy. "If your dream is to win The Voice, just keep reaching for a few more weeks here. I think this is possible."

We moved right along to Wendy Moten of Team Blake and her performance of "Blue Bayou," dedicated to her creative and performing arts teacher from high school. With this song Wendy hoped to show another facet of herself, proving that she can sing any genre put in front of her. Ariana was speechless, shell-shocked that Wendy is still a secret with that flawless of a voice. Blake called out that during the performance all the other coaches were noticing the small impressive moments of finesse that Wendy weaves into her vocals.

    Β

And what the heck was up with that outfit? Oops, again. Anyway, β€œBlue Bayou” is a rather mellow tune, which made this a bit of a surprise pick for Wendy. And made it seem a bit forced when she went for all those big notes over the last minute. Sorry, the arrangement didn’t work for me. Grade: B

    Β

    MJsBigBlog by MJ Santilli
Wendy describes herself as a β€œchameleon” who sings in 4 or 5 different genres. Wendy dedicates her song to the late Dr. Lula Hedgemon, from high school. β€œShe gave me the tools that I needed.” Blake mentions how Linda Ronstadt also excelled in several genres. True! Wendy transitions from beautiful low tunes, to big high notes with ease. She does a beautiful, classic song justice. She’s proving herself to be a great pop singer, as well as R&B. β€œWhat do you say about that” says Ariana, β€œI can’t believe that you’re such a big secret that you are.” Blake notes all the little things that Wendy does. He loves watching the coaches react. He mentions her finesse, and calls the performance β€œtasteful.”

    TalentRecap by Jill O'Rourke
Wendy Moten continues to prove herself as a frontrunner on Team Blake. The singer, who was saved by America's votes last week, performed "Blue Bayou" by Linda Ronstadt, dedicating it to her high school teacher who told her that conquering classical music is the key to singing any genre.Β The performance left Grande speechless, as she tried to express how amazed she is by Moten's talent. Shelton, meanwhile, said the performance had "so much finesse," telling Moten of her chances of winning, "I think this is possible, sis."

    Β

    TVLine by Charlie Mason
After dedicating her Linda Ronstadt number to the teacher who’d inspired her, Wendy did… well, what Wendy always does. She put forth a fantastic performance, poised and pitch-perfect. But is it just me, or is there a kind of disconnect with Wendy? The notes are all there. The nuances are there. The presence is there. I just don’t tend to get a whole lot of emotion from her. She’ll advance to the Top 11, for sure, and rightfully so. I just wish we got a better sense of her being in the songs that she sings. Does that make any sense? Grade: A

    Β

Yahoo!Entertainment by Lyndsey Parker (Editor in Chief, Yahoo Music)

Also dedicating what Blake Shelton called a "tasteful" performance to a beloved teacher, Wendy beautifully demonstrated her genre-hopping versatility on this plaintive Linda Ronstadt classic β€” as one might expect from a pro background singer who's worked with everyone from Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride to Michael Bolton and Michael McDonald.

All FB does is bitch about Wendy being an "established professional"

It won't cost her a finale spot, but its annoying asf.

Wendy also has comments related to a disconnect with the lyrics and audience. It's probably because she's been a session and backing vocalist for most of her career. Her job has been to sing well without outsinging the lead singer or drawing attention to herself.

    Β

Blake touched on that issue in her knockout rehearsal. I'm hoping Wendy can have a breakthrough moment next week on an emotional song that is meaningful to her.Β Β

    Β

Denton Davidson of GoldDerby made their predictions at 7:00 a.m. on 11/15/21:

    Β

Wendy Moten is out front early in our "The Voice" winner predictions with 13/5 odds of earning coach Blake Shelton his ninth championship. The seasoned diva is followed by Girl Named Tom from Team Kelly Clarkson (82/25 odds), Jim and Sasha Allen from Team Ariana Grande (5/1 odds), and Jershika Maple from Team John Legend (13/2 odds).

    Β

On the other end of the spectrum, three artists look to be most in danger of going home on Tuesday, November 16. Jeremy Rosado from Team Kelly as well as Shadale and Joshua Vacanti from Team Legend rank last in our predictions center with 100/1 odds of winning. There is a glimmer of hope for both Jeremy and Shadale, however, because many Gold Derby users are predicting Team Blake's Lana Scott will join Joshua on the chopping block instead.

    Β

Artists expected to advance safely in the middle of the pack are Holly Forbes and Ryleigh Plank from Team Ariana, Paris Winningham from Team Blake, and Hailey Mia and Gymani from Team Kelly.

    Β

Can anyone stop Wendy from running away with the Season 21 title?
