I previously posted a link to the September 23 video in this thread, but here's most of that conversation with Kym Clark. 

 

Kym: When did you know you wanted to be a singer?

Wendy: I didn't. You know, it just landed in my lap.

Just opportunities. I didn't even realize I had a gift 'cuz all my friends in Memphis knew how to sing great, and I thought they were all better than me.

My niece, I felt like she was better — Tamara Monger.

But I, umm, didn't know until literally, maybe a few years ago.

I had a gift and I always want to do my best, but I wasn't sure that I really had IT.

 

Kym: Well, you have IT. And, as a matter of fact, you recently decided to audition for The Voice. When did that decision [happen]?

Wendy: That happened the latter part of last year, because I'm so used to working. It was the first time that, you know, with the pandemic, it's the first time that I didn't have a tour or knew what I was gonna do next.

 

Wendy also wondered what she would do "when everything opens back up."

Wendy: And I didn't see anything for miles and miles and miles.

 

But she was getting "emails" about auditioning for The Voice.

Wendy: I'm thinkin' man, I tell you what. I'm gonna send it in. 'Cuz I can do it from my home. I can just send a video in from my home.

If I have too much experience, they'll just pass. They'll just pass and I'll move on and try to find something else.

But they didn't pass. And they were like, come on out to LA.

 

Kym: What were you feelin'? Were you nervous at all?

Wendy: I wasn't nervous, you know, because the whole process of gettin' to LA and doing the audition — that was the nervous part.

 

On the stage, Wendy just acted like everybody was at her show. She told herself, "Just do your job. Do what you always do."

 

Kym asked what it was like when all four chairs turned around.

Wendy: I have to tell you, I was in a fog because I didn't wanna get caught up. What if they, what if nobody turned around?

About "the last 30 seconds," Wendy "came out of this... daze I was in. And I was like, oh wow! They're on their feet!"

 

Instead of worrying about chair turns, she concentrated on performing.

Wendy: Then if nobody turns around, you'll know that you gave your ultimate best.

So I just moved myself out of the way and just let the song and the music and the moment take me.

 

Kym also asked about the block and choosing Blake.

Wendy: I'm telling you, I wasn't sure anyone would turn around.

Because you just never know. I've been in it so long and you never know what's going' on. I didn't know how to play this game.

But I'm so thankful. I was happy for any of 'em. They're so iconic. There's stuff that I can learn from any one of those four, you know, artists.

 

Wendy revealed that she planned to go with whoever turned around first.

When Blake turned and blocked John, "it kinda makes sense, because I live and work in Nashville" and "it could just only help" with "the next 50 years of my musical career."

Wendy: So it wasn't a bad thing. But any one of those coaches could have worked out for me.

 

Kym: What do you hope to take away from this particular experience on The Voice?

Wendy: I hope that my presence will encourage people to continue to dream and then act on those dreams. I'm 56 years old. I've been in the music industry over 35 years. I already had a recording career and that was over. "Come In Out of the Rain" came out almost 30 years ago. So I basically... have to start over. And hey, I didn't write that one so I can't even live off that.

I gotta find somethin' to do. And I still love it. I still love bein' a storyteller. And so I figured, how can I... make this still be an achievable feat?

Okay. I have to get on TV, and The Voice was there.

I wanna put my heart and soul into it and I just wanna just sing great songs and just touch people. And then we'll see what happens after that.

 

 

In a second shorter clip after her battle with Manny aired, Wendy says her performances are influenced by "all those nights of playing in Memphis clubs" and being around the city's musicians.

Wendy: However, Blake chose that song for us, and Blake chose us to team up together into battle. So I don't know what was goin' on in Blake's mind, but I feel like he was just trying to see what we both could add to the song. And I had to just, you know, keep pushing through and take it that extra little step.

Thanks for posting this detailed summary. Wendy has such a great attitude towards her career and life in general. Its funny that she doubted whether the Voice would select her because of her immense experience.  It’s also interesting that she planned on picking whoever turned first.

I mostly listen to pop music, but I just LOVE his take on the song. I just LOVE all of Avery’s originals and covers of such beautiful and emotional songs — especially ones that are out of his lane.

I never thought I’d see Avery singing Adele.  He killed it though. His voice is a natural fit for emotional songs.

I doubt that’s the reason (if the pairing ends up getting the montage.) In fact, montaging the pairing will probably make them more upset. If they see Carson falter and Lana shine, they might be more accepting of the result. Montaging the pairing will leave room for their interpretations of the how the performances went.
