I would LOL if TPTB misgauged Abi's support level because Songs That Make You Want to Dance and Adele night was so underwhelming relative to the rest of the season. Abi almost certainly lead votes that night, but the strength of the lead might have been misleading due to how weak of a night it was.

    I wouldn’t.

    I’ll be voting.

  3. I can’t vote via text message on my iPhone due to the Idol destination not being supported at my current location by Cricket Wireless, but I’ll try to borrow a smartphone to do text messaging for Abi.  And I can still vote online.

Lionel and Luke are pretty much liars that will stand up and clap for everything and even tho Katy also did that, she had a tendency of being shady and doing some criticism at times. Whoever they decide to go with, needs to have a bit of that energy, otherwise we’re gonna get even less judging on the show.

Agreed.  Her replacement doesn’t need to be as critical as Simon Cowell or even Harry Connick, Jr., but there must be some criticism to balance Lionel and Luke.

I'll predict the performance order now as well as make some general comments on where contestants usually go. Both of Jack's performance will be in the first hour just like for the night of the Top 8 'cause they want to limit his momentum. Emmy will be in the middle as usual. Will has gone early and towards the end, so they could mix it up by having him go late for the first half and early in the second half of the show. Abi is clearly the producer favourite and the one they hope to win, so she'll probably go 4th in both halves of the show. Triston will go second in the first half with the song that connects to his story to limit the chance of him advancing. He'll close with Life On A Highway to leave little time for people to vote for him.

Performance order prediction: 1. Jack - Nobody's Fool 2. Triston - Almost There 3. Emmy - Carried Me With You 4. Abi - The Chain 5. Will - Born To Be Wild 6. Jack - Space Oddity 7. Will - The Ballad of the Lonesome Cowboy 8. Emmy - The Climb 9. Abi -Part of Your World 10. Triston - Life Is A Highway

I wouldn’t mind that performance order.

Abi is from CA.  In 21 seasons, there has only been one winner from CA - Chayce.  But he was pushed as a Country singer.

The rest of the Top 5 are all from Southern states, which has produced the most Idol winners.

Well, there’s always a first time for everything.

Okay now that I listened to the songs that I didn't know, here are my final thoughts from best set to worst set IMO:

    1. Abi: Part Of Your World is probably the most beloved Disney song ever. If she kills this, it will do wonders for her, she has the perfect voice for it and the fact ABC trusted her with it means they probably believe she can nail it since it's never been done on ABC Idol before. I really love The Chain for her because I think with 2 performances, the smartest strategy is to mix up tempos and unlike Fall Out Boy or Coldplay, minivan and the Idol demographic will have an easy time digesting and get into this. It also hasn't been overdone on Idol (I think Megan last season was the first one to sing it in 21 seasons? and it was on Hawaii where the production value and acoustics seriously affects the quality of the performances) and this is a tune that deserves to have its moment on every singing competiton so I hope Abi can deliver the quissential Idol version of the song.

    2. Jack: I just listened to the Cars song and it's actually pretty soulful. He should do well with it, I think it will fit him like a glove. It has a bluesy/classic sound to it that he should be able to execute well. Space Oddity I don't know how to feel about. Obviously it goes without saying that it's a gorgeous song but covering David Bowie is such a hard task. It could go really well or really meh. If he nails, it will make him look really strong. My guess is that he will probably do an acoustic guitar version like Lucy Sugerman from The Voice Australia, which I find to be very pretty. Not a bad set at all.

    3. Will: The Toy Story 4 song is very boring. It doesn't go anywhere melodically or vocally but it has a strong classic country feel to it that should do well with voters and allow him to have a solid performance. I find the melody of Born To Be Wild to be a a bit annoying but this is obviously a classic that everybody knows and it's a nice change of tempo for him. I think he should have an easy time with the song because although it isn't pure country, it's still has that wild west/southern feel to it that fits him very well.

    4. Emmy: Carried Me With You is a cute and pretty song and it isn't super rangey so it's a good fit for her voice. It will be a standard performance for her. The Climb is a really weird choice tho. She doesn't have the range for it so I'm assuming she's doing a soft version of it and keeping it small, which could make it for a nice version of the song. I don't see none of those being moments for her tho. And unless her fan base is really big and she was a shoe-in for finale before this round, I don't think this will push her past forward the finish line.

    5. Triston: If he makes finale with this set, he's probably winning because this is a really odd combination of songs. Life is a Highway is not that surprising. But the song is very cheesy and it's not the type of upbeat tune where he will be able to do his Elvis moves and distract everyone else from his vocal performance. it's a Rascal Flatts song so it still makes some sense for him, although I don't think it's the best pick for his voice at all. Almost There has everything to be a trainwreck. It's a pure jazz song so he will either not do justice to it or try to countri-fy it like he did with "Easy On Me" which would be really bad. The song content is very heart-warming tho. It's all about coming from a tough background and having the will to not let that define you and keep you from following your dreams and I bet his pre performance package will be him with his mom talking about their hardships in life so that could be enough to make up for any flaws with his performances.

Overall, the songchoices for this theme are much better than the ones from last season.

Surprised that Abi isn't doing "When She Loved Me", but at least she'll probably nail "Part Of Your World" (and I'll be praying that she nails it on Sunday night), and at least minivan and the main Idol demographic will like "The Chain", as Wildestinvegas noted.  She should make the finale.

Triston is probably being bussed, as I could never see him doing "Almost There" any justice despite the content being heart-warming.  At least he's not doing "You've Got a Friend In Me".  Looks like my prediction that Triston won't make the finale is going to be accurate.

unfortunately the states that Abi doesn't occupy are probably the states where a good amount of the votes are coming from lol

That's sad but on the other hand, she might have enough support in the states that she does occupy in order to get into the finale at least.

I doubt anyone is a shamed to post.  But that doesn't mean they also feel the need to post a positive or negative comment somewhere. I like Emmy and I have commented on some of her IG posts but I don't go comment on any of these peoples videos posted on FB/IG/YouTube or wherever. It's not out of shame but it's pointless to engage with people on these threads so I just don't bother.

Same here, at least on Facebook.  I do praise Abi’s videos on YouTube, but I don’t comment on her or any other contestant’s videos on Facebook.

The people willing to post about American Idol under their real name (Facebook) are likely wired a lot differently than the vast majority of the voting audience. I’d be interested in knowing the demographic makeup of one group vs. the other. I’ve never once posted or commented about any singing show on Facebook, or even liked a post. People who follow me don’t need to know about the TV shows I watch, let alone which contestants I like or don’t like.

I have liked and shared performances of Abi on Facebook, but I don’t think I’ve commented on a performance of hers.  And I definitely haven’t liked or shared any performances from others, let alone commented on them.  I don’t like using my personal profile to comment on singers either, even those I like.

The originals were pretty well received by those who performed them.  The problem with singing shows is that audiences fall in like with covers of their favorite songs.  But a career doing covers in the real world?  Vegas lounge act, lol.

Unfortunately, I have to agree that doing covers in the real world is a Vegas lounge act.  Although I do like a singer that did covers in a lounge — at Harrah’s in Atlantic City, not in Las Vegas, however.  The singer’s name is Ken McBride and he’s from Waterford, Ireland.  I think he’s doing acts in Florida now, however.

  13. Last Sunday night, not only was Julia Gagnon eliminated from American Idol, but so was McKenna Faith Breinholt.  I already examined why Julia lost, but why did McKenna fall short as well?  As always, I’ll examine the rules that American Idol contestants need to follow in order to find out what McKenna did right, what she did wrong, and why McKenna lost.

The first rule states that contestants should show singing and performing talent.  McKenna began well with this rule, coming in fourth in the Hawaii round on IDF, then coming in first in the Top 20 round and coming in fifth in the Top 14 reveal.  But then she became sick before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame round and IDF ranked her in eleventh that round.  She managed to make a recovery in the Top 12 and Top 10 rounds, but while I thought she was better in the Top 8 round than in the Top Ten one, others disagreed and her solo was ranked above only that of Triston, whom everyone put in last, and she wound up in the Bottom 2 and had to be saved by Katy Perry.

So how did her final performances of “E.T.” and “Make You Feel My Love” go?  The consensus is that she did better on her second song than on her first.  For example, I gave her an 8 on “E.T.”, but thought that the song choice wasn’t good, and gave her an 8.5 for “Make You Feel My Love”.  Overall, I put her above Emmy, Jack, Julia, Triston and Will in that round.  In the end, I believe that McKenna mostly followed the first rule, but had enough problems on certain songs to hurt her in the end.

McKenna had more problems with the second rule, which states that song choice is key.  One of the reasons why more people disliked her choice of “Everywhere I Go” in the Top 8 round was because the song might not have provided her with a moment like “Bring Me to Life” did for Abi.  And I said that her choice of “E.T.” was bad, even if she chose it to thank Katy for saving her.  Thus McKenna struggled with this rule.

The third rule states that contestants must either be consistently great or consistently improving.  McKenna had problems here as well.  She was very good before she got sick and more or less just good afterwards.  Thus McKenna fouled up this rule as well.

At least McKenna had no problem with the fourth rule, which states that contestants must be confident.  I think that she was confident enough.  While it wasn’t enough to save her, at least she followed this rule, so I’ll move on.

The fifth rule states that contestants must have a strong, current and marketable artistic identity.  McKenna was a singer-songwriter, but I’m not sure how current or marketable her identity was.  Thus McKenna might have stumbled with this rule as well.

The sixth rule states that contestants must remember that they are a package.  While McKenna had the backstory of being adopted and of her biological mother being a fine singer, she also looked more mature than the other girls, and was seen as sexy at times.  This probably alienated the core voting demographic, which prefers girls to be more like the girl next door.  Thus McKenna ultimately screwed up this rule as well.

But McKenna had no problem with the seventh rule, which states that contestants must take advice offered to them and follow it — within reason.  Although it wasn’t enough to save her, she followed this rule, so I’ll move on.

The final rule states that contestants must gather and sustain a fan base, and this was probably the biggest problem that McKenna had.  Even before her sickness, she never had as much of a core fan base as others did, partly because she wasn’t a country singer, partly because she was seen as too mature and sexy for the core voting demographic.  And after her sickness, she wasn’t able to recover enough to get additional fans.  Thus McKenna struck out on this rule.

McKenna began well, showing enough singing and performing talent to overcome being too mature for the core voting demographic.  But she got a stomach ailment, and her singing and performing skills suffered while she recovered, exposing her weak fan base.  Worse, she made a bad song choice in the Top 8 round, and she had to be saved by Katy Perry.  After that, even two great song choices might not have been enough to save her, and she had only one good one and one bad one.  McKenna stumbled at a bad time, and that is why McKenna lost.

I would think that if you are a fan of female contestants, you would want to support them after the show so they won't just disappear.  And that means buying their music, seeing them perform live.  Instead of just winning a title - that goes nowhere.  Aside from Chayce, who had a hit single, even though his album flopped, the last time Idol had a legit big winner was back in Season 11.  My math says that was 12 years ago.

If Abi is in the Southern Oregon area, I might try to see her.  And I’ll buy her music.

I think last year for Double Disney they made one of their Disney picks a dedication. Maybe When She Loved Me will be Abi's second dedication to her deceased grandma, who passed away after Hawaii week. If Abi channels what affection she felt for her grandma, I'm sure it'll be a moving performance.

    That would be so sweet.

Do we know the finale schedule already?

The themes for it have been all over the board for the ABC seasons.

Season 16: Winner singles (Round 1), Reprise (Round 2), Hometown dedication (Round 3)

Season 17: Free Choice (Round 1), Hometown dedication (Round 2),

Season 18: Songs to celebrate (Round 1), Reprise (Round 2)

Season 19: Judge’s pick (Round 1), Free Choice (Round 2), Reprise (Round 3)

Season 20: Bruce Springsteen discography (Round 1), Winner singles (Round 2), Reprises (Round 3)

Season 21: Keith Urban’s discography (Round 1), Hometown dedication (Round 2), Winner singles (Round 3)

Since Bon Jovi will be the mentor for the finale, I’m guessing that his songs will be sung in the finale.  After that, I think we’ll have to wait until the Final 3 are revealed in order to find out.
