1. Cying on stage has propelled countless contestants to the Finale, whether those tears are genuine or not, it doesn't matter :haha:.

-------------------------------------

Speaking of crying on stage, I remember this incident with Kyla Jade in season 14:

About Kyla... I don't think that's accurate. :haha: Jaclyn had no chance against, like, 90% of the cast at that point because she was pitchy and had weak vocals. And Kyla never cried because of how people were treating her as a result of Jaclyn. She cried during "How Great Thou Art" because she's religious, and people who are as religious as she is often cry when they feel extremely spiritual. And she cried during "This Is Me" because of her insecurities around her body, and the song was liberating for her. I don't doubt that she has been bullied her whole life because people can be awful, but that is not an accurate way of framing it. At all.

Crying definitely helps with making it to the finale, though... anyone remember Aliyah Moulden bawling in the middle of "Jealous"? (It works best when you're young, though. Doesn't really help when you're over 21 or so.)

----

Now, for my rankings:

1. Rose Short. I don't even know how anyone could put her below #1.

^_^

2. Jake Hoot. At this point, I'm just happy when someone can sing in tune and doesn't bore the daylights out of me. I'm not a Hooter, but this was solid.

3. Marybeth Byrd. She would have been a lot better without the crying. (And for what it's worth, I think it was genuine.)

4. Ricky Duran. I was kinda bored with this one, I must admit, but he sang it really well. Same with Hoot - all I could ask is that he kept it together. Most didn't even do that.

:|

5. Myracle Holloway. I usually don't give anyone credit just for singing a tough song, but Whitney Houston is in another camp, and she kept it together and actually sounded pretty good doing it.

6. Max Boyle. One of my snowflakes; he struggled during the second half when he tried to oversing the falsetto. Things got rough. He's such a good vocalist when he keeps himself in check.

7. Joana Martinez. Same story with Myracle, and she kept it together while dancing around the stage. She deserves some credit, even if the song was just... full of cheese.

8. Cali Wilson. Something resembling redemption from her rough Playoffs showing. Her falsetto was pretty. Other parts were a little rough.

9. Katie Kadan. I really couldn't like her much less, I just don't like anything about her style; it's like she doesn't know any setting below 11. With the exception of her Playoffs, she has a tendency to just do nothing but scream, but somehow, mind-bogglingly escapes the label of "screamer"? Exactly how? I did not like this performance, but I haven't liked any of hers, so what's new? Also, it's blasphemy to touch Janice Freeman's songs, especially if you don't even do them justice.

10. Will Breman. He really struggled to keep it together tonight, which sucks because I really like the guy.

11. Kat Hammock. Just like Katie - I do not like her style at all, but I like Kat even less. Her voice is weak at best. What's more is that a lot of people are ignoring how pitchy she was last night.

12. Hello Sunday. Screechy and, as always, Chelsea held Myla back.

13. Shane Q. I don't even know what to say. Poor guy was destroyed by his nerves and it showed, but he has struggled this whole season, even during his pre-taped Knockouts.

2. Not even necessarily bad performances - but just awful song choices. Like "I-Want-To-Go-Home" song choices.

Thread inspired by Joana Martinez's "Get On Your Feet" by Gloria Estefan. The struggle. Results haven't been announced yet, but I think that choice was bad enough to put her in danger this week.

Runners-up might include:

• Khalea's "Love Like This" by Faith Evans (S17).
• Shawn Sounds' instant save choice of "That's What I Like" by Bruno Mars, S16.
• Everything DeAndre Nico sang in the lives of S15, especially "Cry for You" by Jodeci.
• Everything that happened to Kyla Jade in the S14 finale, especially that discount bin Garth Brooks song as her "oRiGiNaL SiNgLe". (She was bussed so hard and I'm still not over it.)
• Brennley Brown's "Suds in the Bucket" in S12.
• Matt McAndrew's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in his S7 finale.

Am I missing anything?

3. What SHOULD happen: Shane, Kat, and Hello Sunday, with Hello Sunday winning the save.

What WILL happen (IMO): Shane, Hello Sunday, and Myracle, with Hello Sunday winning the save.

----

It seems that the general consensus is that the bottom 3 will include some variation of Shane, Hello Sunday, Myracle, Joana, and/or Will.

Joana and Myracle had such an unfortunate night because of their songs; they are so much better than what they were dealt. Their songs were extremely challenging, but America doesn't appreciate challenging; they appreciate sounding decent or marketable (which is understandable). I don't think Joana will suffer for it as much as Myracle will.

Also, it's kinda interesting that out of a night with maaaaany tragic song choices, the two most tragic ones came from Team Gwen.

4. That’s one of them. Seems like there’s one almost every season. Some of them aren’t widely known about. There was one of those during S8, and someone went bye bye.

Wait, hold up - who was the departed couple from Season 8?

Ugh, I feel like I've missed out on so much of this show's drama over the years...

5. Let's all be Charlie Mason for a night and give the contestants our own grades!

1. Joana Martinez - Get On Your Feet: C+

2. Ricky Duran - You Are the Best Thing: B-

3. Max Boyle - Unaware: B

4. Myracle Holloway - I’m Your Baby Tonight: B+

5. Will Breman - I Won’t Give Up: C+

6. Kat Hammock - Danny Boy: C-

7. Katie Kadan - I’m Going Down: B

8. Cali Wilson - Butterflies: C+

9. Shane Q - My Wish: D

10. Hello Sunday - Mama Knows Best: D+

11. Marybeth Byrd - Go Rest High on That Mountain: B+

12. Jake Hoot - Danny’s Song: A-

13. Rose Short - I Turn to You: A+

6. Yeah, there was a bit of drama in her twitter feed during the season iirc. :whistling:

If anyone has any screenshots or receipts that they're willing to donate... you'd help a girl out.

Was she any good though? I don't remember her blind audition at all. Where Brennan L had the best audition in my opinion.

I personally didn't like her, but she was VERY popular among lots of the viewers during her season. No one had the chance to vote for her because she was eliminated in her battle to Terrence Cunningham (which I remember was VERY controversial... I was one of maybe 10 people on the planet who preferred Terrence :haha: ).

For a rough comparison to her vocal style, she is an indie-pop singer who is KINDA in the vein of Kat Hammock, Mikaela Astel, etc. But maybe linking her videos would be more helpful.

Here's Livia Faith's audition and battle ("Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "Stars").

7. Slight correction to the original post:

From Season 7, Damien actually DID sing "Grenade."

That season had a really strange elimination format where, out of the Top 5, the top 3 were announced while the bottom 2 (Damien and Taylor John Williams) were eliminated. Then they brought back all of the eliminated contestants from the Top 12, and every single one of them got to sing for the fourth Wildcard spot in the finale. Damien sang "Grenade" for the Wildcard save. It definitely wasn't a "what-would-have-been" scenario because he actually sang it. (Also, he won the save!)

The Top 3 (Matt McAndrew, Chris Jamison, and Craig Wayne Boyd) had songs that would have been, since they never had to perform their Wildcard save songs. You can find all of them in their Complete Season Collection packages on iTunes.

For the songs that the Top 3 would have done if they had to sing for the Wildcard save:

• Matt McAndrew would have sung "Imagine" by John Lennon.
• Chris Jamison would have sung "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain.
• Craig Wayne Boyd would have sung "Anymore" by Travis Tritt.

Imagine and I'll Be:

V5obE5x-TT8

8. They have a history of eliminating contestants (at least one of them) when there is a relationship behind the scenes. It’s too distracting.

When has this happened in the past?

I don't doubt it, but I've never heard of this being a thing.

9. Since Brennan + Brennen are the only actual confirmed couple so far this season, I voted for them.

I don't think Will and Lauren are dating. But if they were, that would just be adorable.

For now, I'm convinced they're just reeeeeaaaallllly good friends. (And same with the others.)

10. Underserved elimination - none of them. They weren’t going to win anyway, so it’s irrelevant. The sooner they get to go home, the less reality show stench they have to overcome. Good for them. Seriously

Really didn't think of it like this, but now that you mention it, you have a good point. But I'm gonna play along anyway, as if it matters. :haha:

Undeserved Eliminations (IN ORDER): Marina Chello, Khalea Lynee, Injoy Fountain, Mendeleyev, Gracee Shriver, Dane & Stephanie, Kyndal Inskeep

This just made me realize how many awful eliminations there have been. I forgot about so many of these. I'll always be a little sore about Marina Chello and Khalea Lynee.

Deserved Saves/Steals (IN ORDER): Max Boyle, Myracle Holloway, Joana Martinez, Will Breman, Gracee Shriver, Kiara Brown, Cali Wilson

I’d also add that Gracee never should’ve lost her knockout, but I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. Max Boyle’s save never should’ve happened because he won his Knockout IMO. Myracle’s save was literally a miracle (pun intended) and I wanted it, but I didn’t expect it at all; it was 100% the right choice. Will Breman is a treat and deserves to still be on the season, and I’m glad John chose him, although I miss Khalea. Kiara will be forever underrated and forgotten.

Undeserved Saves/Steals: Shane Q, Hello Sunday

I guess Kelly didn’t have another better choice there, considering who she had to work with. Shane was the best singer she had to choose from. Funnily enough, these both came from her team. Hello Sunday brought it during their Instant Save performance, but I think Gracee and Jake (but especially Gracee) were much stronger contestants overall.

11. Actually, I'm changing mine a bit.

1/2. Rose Short and Max Boyle (tie)

3. Myracle Holloway

4. Joana Martinez

12. Hello Sunday

13. Shane Q

I changed it because I'm in love with Will Breman's rendition of "Style." Dude is just so much fun to listen to, and I have a soft spot for him. He seems like he has the best personality and so much dang fun up there. And I prefer all of his arrangements over the originals.

Also, it's kinda funny (but also sad) that Shane Q is the favorite of 0... and the least favorite of 28.

A 0/28 record. I wonder if the folks outside of IDF feel the same way.

12. It's REALLY hard to tell, because it really depends on how everyone does per week. A crashing frontrunner can really upend these results, like Cali Wilson did during Top 20 week. A lot of these performers feel really close in fanbases and votes, and I'm only confident about two making it to the finale (Katie and Hoot). I'll try my best, though.

ELIMINATIONS:

TOP 13

Bottom 3: Cali Wilson, Myracle Holloway, Shane Q

Saved: Shane Q

TOP 11

Bottom 2: Shane Q, Will Breman

Saved: Will Breman

TOP 10

Bottom 3: Hello Sunday, Will Breman, Joana Martinez

Saved: Joana Martinez

TOP 8

Bottom 2: Joana Martinez, Kat Hammock

Middle 3: Max Boyle, Rose Short, Marybeth Byrd

Saved: Marybeth Byrd (THE INJUSTICE)

FINALE

4th Place: Marybeth Byrd

3rd Place: Ricky Duran

Runner-up: Katie Kadan

Winner: Jake Hoot

13. I'll be honest, I haven't actually liked any of them. I didn't even like Melanie's, although hers is definitely influential enough to have inspired dozens of copycats.

Listening to Cali's on YouTube, it sounds a lot better than it did on my TV. Definitely her worst performance as of late, but not irredeemable. I remember never liking Jackie Foster's version even though she's a good singer; that song just didn't do her any justice whatsoever. Yeah, I can't believe I'm saying this, but Cali's version is my favorite, relative to the others.

But have we all forgotten about Davina Leone's version of "Toxic?" From Season 12? Anybody?

Ooh. That's the definition of struggle. :haha: There it is below.

14. I get the auto tune complaint but sometimes I just wonder if auto tune is just a fail safe complaint for when snowflakes do poorly in prelives

I mean, I can see why you'd think that. I think a lot of people do that. :haha:

That really isn't the case here, though. I listed Melinda Rodriguez, Royce Lovett, James Violet, Destiny Rayne, Preston Howell, and Zach Bridges as people who were victimized by the sudden lack of AutoTune. None of those people were my snowflakes, and I actually preferred every single competitor who they went up against (yes, I even preferred Hoot over Melinda). Khalea was my snowflake, but James Violet was very obviously harmed by having AutoTune removed from him when he performed in his KO when pitch was never an issue for him before. I actively disliked Preston Howell and Zach Bridges, but I admit that they suffered too (especially Zach) from the lack of AutoTune that cushioned them in previous rounds.

It has been known for a while that the producers use AutoTune to support the singers who they like, at the detriment of those who they don't.

12. Hello Sunday

13. Shane Q

16. Something that really stood out to me this season, is that autotune was used more selectively, especially in the KO. Let’s make the loser sound like sh-t and autotune tf out of the winner, so people aren’t upset when their snowflake gets eliminated! I’m sure it’s happened before, but it seemed more blatant this time.

OH MY GOD, THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS. I thought I was crazy. I thought I was the only one who noticed.

The AutoTune has always been sinister on this show, especially when you have someone who sounded INCREDIBLE in the past two rounds and then suddenly out-of-nowhere sounded awful in the Knockouts... but it has never been worse than it was this season.

A previous commenter mentioned both Melinda Rodriguez (vs. Hoot) and Royce Lovett (vs. Haldenvang), but it was also noticeably awful with James Violet (vs. Khalea), Destiny Rayne (vs. Rose), Preston Howell (vs. Marybeth), and Zach Bridges (vs. Braddy). Like, it couldn't have been more obvious that the producers preferred the singers in parentheses to make it to Lives, and did what they could to make their competitors look measurably worse in comparison, when all of them sounded decent in previous rounds.

It is absolutely in their contracts. You were right in your previous comment; they sign their ENTIRE depictions to this process, so the show can do with them as they please. Mold them into a snowflake, or melt them and make them look bad. It is pretty well known that every single season has a "story" that the producers meticulously shape by manipulating contestants and their depictions.

So I guess my point is that I understand Jake's anger. He probably thought that his experience on this show would be way different than what he got, and maybe he didn't think the producer manipulation would be that bad. Maybe he feels really jaded now. But the way he's going off about it now makes him look worse.

It's hard for me, some girl sitting at home, to tell someone in his position that he should lay off of it on social media because it looks like sour grapes. The whole thing is unfair, but retweeting people calling the show "rigged" just doesn't seem like the right approach. But I guess I don't understand. :(

17. Meh, the producers/show deserves it. If I knew I would never get recognition for my original music while someone like Blake does, I would go off and spill the tea :whistling:

I would never say they don't deserve it. I've been a "fan" of this show since Season 2, and I've seen a lot of shady stuff in that time from the producers. Jake was bussed harder than anyone since Kyla from Season 14. It just doesn't really look good for him to go off like this.

Here's a compilation of posts that he retweeted, with one that he posted himself:

https://imgur.com/a/cPX5BGX

And for the record, I think he has a lot of good points, and I think it's totally understandable that he wants to defend himself. But wouldn't he have something in his contract that would keep him from talking so negatively and transparently about the way the show does things?

18. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR THIS NEW INFO ON JAKE.

I know you have already looked at his Twitter page, but I'm shocked at how awful it is. And I liked the guy - A LOT. I loved him. I always love rockers on this show, and before having those tragic song choices foisted on him, he was one of the best-singing rockers this show has ever had. I'll stand by my opinion that his knockout was one of the best of the season.

But now this guy is shooting himself in the foot, and it is NOT a good look. His tweets and retweets make him look so salty. He retweeted someone who called the show "rigged." He retweeted someone who criticized Gwen. He's retweeting people complaining about the time zone differences and lack of app notifications in the Instant Save. (I'll get screenshots soon.)

Seriously, maybe he couldn't hear how out of tune and out of place his performances sounded to the viewers back home, and that's coming from a fan. I wish I could defend him, but even when you get a whack song choice like "Turning Tables," it helps to at least sing it in tune, and he didn't do that either. I know he didn't choose his songs, and I know a lot of people on this show just don't get the luck of the draw. You CANNOT win if the producers don't like you, and his song choices proved that they hated him. But this just looks really, really bad.

That's such a bad look, I just... thank you, Jake. I needed this drama. :haha:

19. The Voice is having an Alumni Event in Nashville this week/today. Some people that are there include Kyla Jade, Kendra Checkett, Kim Cherry, Hannah Kay, Carter Lloyd H, Andrew Jannakos, Jackie Verna, Emily Ann (who also performed at the event), Cecily Hennigan, Dallas Caroline, Reagan Strange, RaeLyn (also performing), Sundance Head, Red Marlow, The Bundys, Presley Tennant, Gyth Rigdon, and more probably.

I miss Queen Kyla so much, you have no idea...

Even though I don't care for the majority of the artists who you listed, and actively dislike a few.

20. It's either this he thought she was more popular and wanted 4 of his team to advance and thought Gracee had the best shot or equally as likely he's completely full of crap and just picked Cali because she was on his team first. As far as the app results hard to say but I do thinking going first hurt Gracee. It also didn't help that Kelly screamed like a lunatic over a flawed performance.

But it also hurt Gracee (and Jake Haldenvang) that they had a COMMERCIAL BREAK after their performances. That gave them a severe disadvantage, and it gave Hello Sunday and Alex Guthrie a huge advantage. It wasn't just Kelly's excited reaction for her teammates; it was the timing, too.

But I also think Gracee played it a little safe when she couldn't afford to do that. "Landslide" was a really pretty performance. For what it's worth, I voted for her to get the save; I've always really liked her even though I'm not much of a country fan, and she had the best Instant Save performance to me. But my whole family found it boring in spite of me enjoying it. And Hello Sunday rose to the occasion. As flawed as the performance was as a whole, that one big note was what won it for them. They took a risk that sounded really impressive, when Gracee didn't, and Alex and Jake were mediocre at best so they were out of the running.

Overall, artists who took risks were rewarded, like Will Breman and Hello Sunday. Gracee and a few others, like Khalea for instance, were punished for not taking risks. Khalea (my snowflake this season) is another artist who needed to rise to the occasion and show what she could do, and she played it safe during the Playoffs. Look where that got her, losing to Alex Guthrie of all people.

21. Nah she was just being bitter. Sad, because I enjoyed Vanessa

I love Vanessa too, but I did hear that she made a ton of Twitter posts about Chris Blue after the season ended; she never mentioned him by name, but from what I remember, it was obvious she was talking about him. She still doesn't follow him on social media (but she follows a ton of the other contestants). Chris Blue doesn't follow her, either.

Reminds me of when Kimberly Nichole went off on social media regarding her really close loss in the Instant Save, but I've never actually SEEN screenshots of those posts (and I REALLY want to)... I just heard about the meltdown, but I never saw it for myself. I've seen screenshots of Vanessa's. Both of them have deleted those posts (probably were asked to).

Funny how two of my all-time faves have had Twitter tea parties. :haha:

I doubt there’s ill intent with either of the things you mentioned. JMHO

I don't think there's ill intention behind those, either. That's why I included that gray text. I just figured it was worth mentioning because there's nothing else this season.

This is a relatively drama-free bunch. I miss the shady days of Rizzi Meyers on Instagram... and DeAndre Nico and RobeGate... and Spensha Baker lightly suggesting that she can't stand Pryor Baird...

22. CeeLo exists

One does not forget how CeeLo had an artist like Trevin Hunte on his team, and somehow managed to NOT get him to win. CeeLo gave that man "Wind Beneath My Wings" out of nowhere without stopping to think if it was even a good match for his style and voice, and GOOD LORD, 7 years later I'm still salty.

In all seriousness, I don't even know how anyone could seriously call Kelly "the worst Voice coach of all time" when she coached two winners in her first 2 seasons. Only reason she was destroyed in Season 16 was because of the format, which heavily favored Blake above all else.

Not to mention that she is one of the most connected coaches on the show; she gives more visible opportunities and support to her former contestants than any other coach. (Miley, Blake, Alicia, and Adam have also done a ton to help their former contestants. But Kelly goes above and beyond. She has had Lynnea Moorer perform on stage with her, got Brynn Cartelli at a Macy's parade, got Chevel Shepherd at a NASCAR game, etc.)

TL;DR Unpopular opinion, but Kelly is nowhere near being the worst coach. Heck, I wouldn't even say she is a bad coach at all.

23. You guys, I loved the gossip thread SO MUCH. I'm so sad it's gone.

I'm hoping we might get it started back up here. I don't have much gossip to add to kick it off, save for the fact that in another thread, folks were discussing how on Instagram, Cali follows every person who was on Team Blake during the Knockouts except for Joana Martinez.

Also an IDF member was blocked by Cali for dishing a spoiler before the season aired.

(Lots of people have already speculated on why either of those happened, and it's likely that neither one is malicious, but I figure it's worth stating because that's ALL I HAVE RIGHT NOW)

Anyone have anything else to add? Any gossip, drama, controversy, etc. is welcome. I love this show's drama... :haha:
