SONGS OF THE 1990s MINI RANKDOWNS

61MYXuhLO4L._UXNaN_FMjpg_QL85_.jpg

1. Each round will begin with rankers choosing songs for that year.

2. Every ranker will eliminate and/or advance songs until we are left with a Top 20 for the round.

3. The rankers will privately send a ranking of the Top 20 songs. Write-ups are not required, but feel free to submit them if you wish.

Once the winning song is revealed, we'll move on to the next round. By the end of the game, the Top 2 songs of each round will be ranked in one final overall ranking.

The format is nearly identical to the 2000s music game. The one difference here is that rankers won't be limited to the Billboard Year-End list for songs. Wallace gave me a heads up about Billboard's strict rules and format during the '90s. If we just used the Year-End list, then well-known songs such as "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia, "Don't Speak" by No Doubt, "Lovefool" by The Cardigans, "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, and others would've been ineligible for this game.

So, this time around, I'll let anyone pick any song that is suitable for the year. I'll link the Billboard Year-End list to give you a general idea of songs to advance. But it's up to the rankers to do their own research if they want to look outside the Billboard Year-End list for songs. Just make sure the song was released and/or charting during that year.

Thank you for the mention!

Yeah as I mentioned to Steven, in the 90s some really popular songs didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100 due to them not being physical singles to buy and some chart rules like tha. They were able to chart on the airplay chart but not the main Hot 100. I feel like this rule/stat was more affective in the mid to late 90s (like '95-'98) but was for years before that.

Here is that link that has those songs (which should be helpful for future years): https://billboardchartrewind.wordpress.com/2019/01/09/the-complete-list-of-airplay-only-hits-for-1987-1998/

Yes this is a very good point, thanks @*Wallace I can vouch for all that and in his post above.

Hot 100 Airplay is the chart that would have all those other songs. I'll probably bookmark Wallace's link there

No problem. As a chart follower yourself, I knew you would know about this too. :haha: I always knew of this rule and wondered which/how many songs were affected by this as I knew it was a lot. So finding that link was very helpful as it has all of the songs listed there.
