I've been watching this show around the world for around ten years, and it's the first time in the USA that an artist has made me love country

Ruby made it, she's an artist with an incredible voice

if she wins, she will have fully deserved it, if Jacquie also wins, it will be deserved (the note she made was incredible)

So many great performances last night!

Huntley has been my favorite from the beginning, and he was solid.

But IMHO Mara channeling Janis won the night for me.

(Although Jacquie was incredible the fact that she went early in the lineup was a disadvantage TBH.)

I think Jacquie deserve much more credit that she got for her finale set.

This was the Jacquie that I've been waiting to see ever since her KO performance. She definitely brought it. She hit some crazy - insane notes in both of her performances.

Yeah the finale set (particularly more than a feeling) convinced me Jacquie is the best belter this season, which is saying a lot given the competition. Power, range, breath control.. One of those notes lasted 10 seconds and she went up the scale 3 times.

guys i have a theory

jelly roll (jacquie battle song) and teddy swims (mara top 12 song) are performing tonight.

jelly roll/jacquie duet

teddy swims/mara duet

idk who the other finalists would duet with but it could be a good theory

Teddy/Huntley makes sense, too

I think I saw on 1iota that they filmed the performances on Saturday and Sunday, so if the contestants did sing with them, it was likely pretaped. I will be surprised if they did tbh.

People loved Mara's blind audition, but as soon as she started working with John, her battle and knockout weren't that amazing. But when she started working with Niall she was great again. Lol so maybe John was her problem lol

I honestly could see John giving her Without You even though they supposedly choose their own KO songs

I am not sure if we can 100% predict the winner but will most probably be between Ruby and Huntley. I am Team Jacquie. Mara is a dark horse. Lila can also surprise us but I believe the other 4 artists are what has appealed to The Voice audience throughout the past seasons.

I will still be really happy for whoever wins. Lowkey kinda hoping for Niall to keep his winning streak 😅

5) Jacquie - This week, Jacquie takes on the persona of a sultry rock singer, doing '70s prog rock/classic rock staples from Boston and the Moody Blues, respectively. She sings them reasonably with her consistently solid stage presence. But the performances fail on several fronts. Portland's own was never a country singer to begin with, and rock pop is more her lane (not pop rock, as she's more rock than pop). Kinda like BIAS, she's taking on so many identities she confuses the audience (although nice ruse using "country" to advance this far). Last week, pure pop, now prog rock, earlier weeks country. She also gives the vibe of a very good karaoke singer - she doesn't really tell the story of the lyrics, or show much nuance, she just sings it as a way to showcase her pipes. There's no little easter egg moments of "wow" within within her singing progression. So it's very predictable, but for singing show audiences who love "safe" obviously she's in their zone. I'd prefer to listen to Daughtry's "Alive", Boston's "More Than a feeling" (or hell, NSYNC's version). I'll give her this; she chose two excellent songs (Nights in White Satin can absolutely be a moment song, but wasn't even close here). Hopefully we see that one more often in future seasons.

4) Lila - Lila is heavily zoned in to the distinct mid '90s folksy sound, compared to the omnivorous musical tendencies of Jacquie. I almost expected her to do some Lisa Loeb, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole "Dawson's Creek" or whatever to go all nostalgic on us. A bit of a shame that never happened, but Indigo Girls came somewhat close to the era. She's very Seattle, a little bit of that DIY-cool-for-school vibe which adds some character to her performances (saw a bit of that in the "The Band" cover). I've criticized Lila for having a bit of a languid, somewhat flat effect in her musical choices and stage presence; but that languid effect was put to excellent use with "Across The Universe". She leans hard to the psychedelic aspect, which fits well with the "universe" theme and the peaceful garden backdrop. Frankly, this was the snuggest song fit; you can see some neo-psychedelia representing her unique sound, rather than being placed in her nostalgic coffeehouse cover album. Another thing to give Lila immense credit: she's chosen excellent songs that fit her general style  (James Taylor, Joni's "River", Blind Faith, Indigo Girls). Yes, she's boxed them all into a mid 90s coffeehouse style, but you'd have to be in that mood, and it feels more nostalgic than modern. But nostalgia good, mood music good, she's got that Seattle vibe, and she chose excellent songs throughout.

3) Mara - Mara wins the most improved play -er, most improved singer award for the season. I've done a complete 180 in my perception of her as she's progressed, which is quite incredible especially given the shortened season. Just to recap: I thought her singing show background and early old song covers were well-done karaoke. But she's become much of an artist since the Teddy Swims song, Stapleton's Parachute, and an excellent showcase in Swift's "Exile". She generally goes all-out in her performances, so a ballady switchup with Adele's "Turning Tables" was necessary, and she did it very well. Her world-weary, rocky voice sold that song, and of course that rocky voice went full pipes on a very on-the-nose Joplin cover. Leg kicks, facial expressiveness, playing with notes like playing with food, Mara put her Mara-stamp on that song. The P!nk guitarist was certainly rollicking and feelin' it in the backdrop, and it's interesting they threw in an age-appropriate gaggle around Mara to freshen her up against an old song. She clearly lives and breathes music, and you almost feel like she needs music just by the manic effort she puts into all her performances. That, and her progression as an artist as she's become more self-assured, makes it possible she had the best collective two performances of the night. She'll get a ton of casuals. and if Jacquie, Ruby, and Huntley have a similar vote-base, maybe that vote-split can eke out a narrow win with a puncher's chance. There's also a chance she can overtake Ruby especially with her lack of comfort without the guitar, and even Huntley's choice of esoteric songs with little vote equity creates openings. But Ruby's catalog is generally incredible, and Huntley never really falters in his performances, so I'll just place Mara here, but a really strong 3rd if that's the case. Side note: Hailey Mia placed 4th on the Voice and went to Idol; one wonders if Mara would return back to Idol as a stronger contestant 3 or 4 years down the line after this.

2) Ruby - I like Ruby's catalog throughout the Voice; for a 16-year old to be singing Ronstadt, Jolene, John Denver, The Eagles, Elvis, she's singing songs her grandparents grew up with, and she sells them like an old soul. All her songs have a certain style - a world-weary aspect and choosing jilted lover (the Reba song, Jolene, Ronstadt, Leann's Blue)/other sensitive topics way beyond her age. And many of those songs have moments (Jolene, Ronstadt's "Long Long Time" was absolutely incredible). But truthfully, she's been doing a lot of mournful love ballads that just feel...very morose. Not Debbie Downer type stuff, but it's incredible that she first auditioned with a very hokey Western up-tempo Patsy Montana that would make good barnyard animal dance music, and then went sad 10x over after that (with the exception of John Denver, which tried to approximate this vibe). Wondering if voters would think whether it's natural for a 16-year old to be this sad. But as discussed in previous power ranks, she has a lot of elements (age, country, old soul) to counteract that, so really just a note. This week though, in "Suspicious Minds", her stage presence was weird-constant shaking of her head, throwing her hands up in somewhat? disgust to act out the song, She's way better with the guitar. I wonder if that might dissuade voters some, but I get why TPTB chucked out all instruments as others created the soundscape for performances. "Desperado" is another in that cowboy Western country catalog that's a snug fit for her. Overall, her run represented her style incredibly well, and just isolating the vocals for her performance, it's easy to see her impressing music aficionados who don't watch the Voice - she'll throw many into a loop in 2023.

1) Huntley - Virginia by way of Jersey, it was only natural for Huntley to choose out-of-the-box songs with dark undertones that have little vote equity. That's really more in his wheelhouse, and you get the sense TPTB "coerced" him into doing normal songs like Bon Jovi, Hootie and Joe Cocker just because they are very familiar to the audience. But the David Kushner song hinted at it, and that gargled metal, grungy growl was always looking to cut loose throughout all those generic songs. I'm fairly certain he chose Creed's "Higher" for himself - not sure if Niall is versed enough of '90s post-grunge, and Huntley almost certainly grew up with this music as a pre-teen. Creed's certainly butt-rock, the progenitor of Nickelback, and Scott Stapp is certainly the butt of many jokes in rock spheres. But as mentioned, Huntley certainly would have been in a Creed-like band if he was born in '76, so this makes all sorts of sense. Hell, Huntley probably did it better than the original, because he's that good in this genre. The Tom Odell song might have been a Niall recommend - Odell's British, that song didn't even make the top 100 in the US, and you'd get a sampling of 100 music loving Americans in a random location and maybe only 1 person might even be familiar. That was performed well, in typical Huntley fashion. Overall, this guy never falters. His larynx must be hella strong, he's extremely at ease on stage, he's always present and nothing ever really lingers/fades, and he seems positively happy to be on the show. He's obviously memorable both vocally and on stage. That counts for a hell of a lot. I actually like how he's doing all this with experimental song choices and with that metal growl - it adds another dimension to a possible winner. Because of his overall comfort, the rock space was a haven for votes a dozen years ago, and he's happy against dark backdrops, I think this is our winner.
