reba seems reallt cool and i don’t know much abt her ascent to success so please feel free to educate me but i feel like her success story was likely very different than a lot of these contestants’ experiences? not only did she become famous in an entirely different era, more importantly, she said both her father and grandfather already performed at the opry (?) so she likely grew up growing connections in the industry.

Β

for someone with few connections growing up, i imagine it’s a lot tougher. no family connections to expedite the process

Β

but yeah if this is wrong lemme know and no hate to Reba of course she seems cool

Her father and grandfather were world champion steer ropers. Her mom and siblings also sang, although I’m not sure whether they performed at the Opry.Β
Β

I’m not an expert on all things Reba, but I spent about a minute looking at her wiki page. She’s pretty much self-made, as far as I can tell.Β

Technically, she did come from a family of singers.Β
Β

β€”-
Β

β€œWith her mother's help, she and her siblings formed the Singing McEntires, which played at local events and recorded for a small label. McEntire later enrolled atΒ Southeastern Oklahoma State UniversityΒ and studied to become a public school teacher. She also continued to occasionally perform and was heard singing at a rodeo event by country performerΒ Red Steagall. Drawn to her singing voice, Steagall helped McEntire secure a country music recording contract withΒ PolyGram/Mercury RecordsΒ in 1975; she relocated toΒ Nashville, Tennessee, with her mother that year.”

Based on her last name I’m pretty sure Kaylee is Japanese. I don’t remember many Japanese people on the show, so good representation!

Β

From a couple of her IG posts, I think her father is Japanese (or part Japanese - he looks Japanese) and her mother is Filipina.Β

Makes sense, we were just learning about the Filipino and Japanese diasporas in HawaiiΒ :giggle:

Ehh, BIAS seems to have reinvented himself as a "country" artist a few years ago. He's got a fly white boy vibe, kinda like a Nicky Youre, kinda like a Chris Richardson, if this is any indication:

He's really pop/soul with Christian influences; country almost acts as window dressing as he's trying to make something hit. The mononym is just to distinguish himself further from the trees.Β

He’s basically a Dan & Shay β€œcountry singer.” He picked the wrong season.Β
Β

His mononym isn’t Google friendly, but at least it doesn’t pull up numerous wedding dress ads in Portuguese.Β

Β

OT but Hawaii's population is 37% Asian (biggest demographic group) -- 14.6% Filipino Americans, 13.6% Japanese Americans. [Source 1, Source 2].Β

Β

I hope Kaylee Shimizu would make the live rounds. Has there been a contestant from Hawaii who made it to the voting rounds on The Voice?
