Wasted potential performances?

You can choose to interpret this question whichever way you want, but the topic I had in mind was performances that could’ve been moments but are held back from being so for one reason or another.

• Chloe Kohanski’s “Thank You” - I thought the song was absolutely perfect for her tone, and she sounded gorgeous on the verses… but her missing those head voice flips on the choruses take me out of it. Would’ve been among my favorites of hers’ if not for that.

• Morgan Myles’ “Total Eclipse of the Heart” - There is honestly no reason she shouldn’t have been able to nail this song. If she did it similar to how Chloe did it… it would’ve gone over a lot better for her.

Wé McDonald - Home

Perfect for her voice, but she got sharp on the high notes.

From the same season

Aaron Gibson - Hurt (It could have been so much better if he did the Johnny Cash version).

I like this @FloorWax. It’s one of the more armor-piercing questions we’ve had on this forum. A bit more creative than just “You’re favorite’s least favorite performance” because it forces you to go into the specifics of why.

I admired Hunter Plake's run on the show a lot and appreciate his attempt to flip everything.

Somebody That I Used to Know just did not sound good imo. A million ways to flip each song, he didn't choose/produce a good flip here.

Also not 100% keen on his Higher Love cover, but it's acceptable.

Kenzie Wheeler's He Stopped Lovin Her Today had all the tools to become his crowning moment, but he underdelivered.  I think he could have beaten Cam had he pulled it off. Either way, it was a risk, it's a huge song.

Tamara Jade - Let It Be

Ok, i know people didn't have big expectations about her (And they were extremely right 😶). But that song choice had all potential to be a moment, especially at the Semifinal, being in the second to last spot. She even had a "moment" dress. The producers really set up everything in her favor... and she flopped big time. What a big dissapointment

Parijita Bastola - All I Ask

Her pre-show cover was amazing! She even added her own Nepali twist on it too. Such a shame we never got the same moment on the show though. It's still great as always, but I'm a little bit disappointed because she could have upgraded it to another level. Also no Nepali lyrics there :(

Regardless of how talented John H was, I don't think it was that hard to get a PV over him. She really fumbled the bag when she couldn't.

Oh you’re right that really should have been a moment but for some reason it just wasn’t.

I remember the studio version sounding really good too.

The original let it be is not that hard to sing, and I'd say pretty easy (compared to most other songs) to inject your own spin to it. Definitely a big dissappointment.

I pretty much agree with this though, given IDF's relatively lukewarm reaction to Thank You, my first reaction is generally to defend it. As you say, Chloe sounded great through most of the song even if it wasn't perfect. The song is also understated and not TV's usual fare - at the time, I'd have preferred White Flag if the pick was to be Dido.

Gina's All I Want might qualify here.  Had she not come through with Nothing Compares in the finale, we'd be recalling this song as more of a missed opportunity.
