  3. 3. Bonus question, who's your favourite current judge?

So who are your picks for the best and worst American idol judge in the shows history?

Best for me goes to Paula.. yes, not the most constructive and helpful, but she's a sweetheart, def the nicest judge. Hard not to like her, and she called out Simon's uncalled for comments.

Worst... Ellen? I don't even remember her tbh.

Hmm.

I voted Katy, Harry, and Katy.

But yes. Ellen was the fan who should've stayed a fan. Poor Mariah never had a chance. Nicki was never herself fully. Harry was a Simon Cowell wannabe. IMO :P

I know he was high like half the time but honorable mention to Steven Tyler. Paula has my heart. And I have her autograph so yeah... lmao

Best: Simon. He got lazy in S8 and S9 but his comments always pushed the contestants to do better. People wanted to impress him.

Worst: We’ve had some stinkers but I’d have to give it to Ellen. She made no impact whatsoever. Mariah at least was memorably bad and Nicki knew what she was talking about for the most part. Lionel is basically useless but he is like a proud father figure for the contestants lol.

Current: Definitely Katy. I agree with her the most.

Ugh, yes. He does know a lot about music but his comments always came over as holier than thou to me. And for all his pickiness, the seasons that he was a judge had some very weak talent. Shi Scott making the Top 24 over Jelly Joseph? Really? I also think he just loves to hear himself talk. However, I could see him being a good mentor. Definitely several steps up from Bobby Bones.

I think Simon was a great judge because he was honest even if we didn't always agree with him but he didn't give tips on how to improve. I voted Keith because he always gave constructive criticisms/tips on how to improve and he was really kind about it too.

As for the worst it would be Ellen. I found her comments weird as she always talked about food that had nothing to do with music. I also didn't like Nicki because she seemed kinda perverted with her comments? That's the kind of impression I got at least, I dunno. Mariah was just boring but that's only because Nicki was there as they didn't seem to like each other.

And I like Luke the best as current judge the best.

I can't deny watching Simon was entertaining, but he was a real dickwad a lot of the time. Frequently insulting contestants physical appearance, and no constructive criticism, especially those who were not good.

Also, I honestly didn't agree with a lot of his criticisms.. Adam Lambert, Taylor Hicks, Tori Kelly to name a few.

Best: Didn’t watch FOX Idol but based on what I’ve seen I really like Paula.

Current: None? :haha: This panel is terrible imo, I always skip their commentary whenever I can. I guess I would choose Katy because her song choices for the Judges’ Contest are usually pretty cool?

Meh, Simon is overrated as a judge. He had no idea what the US musical landscape was like in his early seasons, and he torpedoed the show in S8 and S9 when he was a producer.

imo, Kara and Harry were the best judges. Kara was never really set up to succeed, and she’s also guilty of partaking in the S8 shenanigans, but her advice was constructive. She knew what she was talking about and had the career stats to back it up.

Harry came off as pretentious at times, but - as with Kara - his advice was blunt and he had the technical knowledge to relay. He also didn’t stand up for everything the way that JLo and Keith did. His interactions with Quentin that one week were cringe, though.

Worst is Ellen. She had no absolutely no business being a judge and was clearly brought in as a ratings stunt.

Of the current panel, I guess Luke since he seems to have stayed involved in the careers of a few of them after the show, but I went with Katy since I still like her the best.

Ugh, why did they ever mess with the judging panel? Paula should’ve gotten the salary she asked for. Yes, she was crazy at times but she helped make the show into the juggernaut it became.

Kinda surprised Luke Bryan has the least votes for the 3rd poll, I honestly think he's the least cringey of the 3.

Lionel and Katy, they have their moments, but can be so over the top and cliche machines at times (Katy has great taste in music tho)

Wait, they really brought in Ellen at some point? :haha:

Season 9 in 2010, the season after Paula quit. They brought her in because she was a huge Idol fan and was popular with her talk show. She was an awful judge lol. Did nothing but make jokes and admit she knows nothing about music. That was arguably the worst season ever of Idol, at least until Season 12 came along.

How was S12 percieved on IDF when it was airing? I feel like the female dominance and Mariah/Nicki drama is something IDF would eat up, but I have also seen it regarded by many as a horrible season.

I think I remember everyone being excited for Nicki joining the panel since she was a current female artist. But once the show got started, people were turned off by her and Mariah. Mariah was a huge letdown and very boring and disconnected from the show. She hated being a judge and you could tell.

People were happy that we were finally going to get a female winner again but upset that TPTB went to such desperate lengths to do it. It was just too rigged to be enjoyable. Angie was the IDF It Girl that season and she didn’t even win like everyone was thinking. Candice is one of the most deserving winners ever IMO but she went nowhere because the label didn’t know what to do with her. The whole season was a huge flop and the show lost like 6 million viewers from the premiere to the finale, IIRC. Season 12 killed Idol as we knew it. It didn’t help that The Voice was still new at the time and really started garnering a lot of attention. I think Idol began losing the ratings war to The Voice in S12 also. If not then, it was S13.
