SCD Series 21 Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I just looked at the Blackpool scores.

Bobby & Dianne - Jive: 8, 9, 9, 9 = 35
Angela R & Kai - American Smooth: 6, 7, 7, 8 = 28
Layton & Nikita - Couple's Choice: 9, 10, 10, 10 = 39
Annabel & Johannes - American Smooth: 8, 9, 9, 9 = 35
Ellie & Vito - Charleston: 9, 10, 10, 10 = 39
Angela S & Carlos - Argentine Tango: 8, 10, 10, 10 = 38
Nigel & Katya - Quickstep: 7, 8, 8, 8 = 31

I expected lots of high scores tonight! Happy, pleased and not surprised that Ellie and Layton got the highest scores. Oooh snap, wasn't expecting Angela S to get three 10s but looking forward to that dance. Happy to see Bobby having a bit of a breakthrough and getting his highest score. Nicee to see Annabel getting her joint highest score. Aww sad to see Nigel with a dip in his scores. I thought this would have been a huge dance for him. :( Kinda surprised Angela R got that low of a score on an American Smooth but I am/was expecting her to go this weekend regardless.

Hoping to watch the episode either late tonight or tomorrow, probably tomorrow.

Ellie & Layton are coming to get some of the highest averages the show has ever seen at the end of this series, my goodness.

They really could do it huh? :dead: They are killing it every week! :omg:

It did. Craig likes to ruin great things. 😢 :/

Week 9 Spoiler (although it's been out for a while.)

Bobby & Dianne & Angela R & Kai had to dance off. The judges unanimously saved Bobby. Which means Angela had her full circle moment and was eliminated

I have started watching this season a few weeks ago but Ellie and Vito absolutely keep smashing it  The Charleston was perfect. Surprised it didn’t get 40. Angela’s Argentine Tango was also pretty damn flawless.

My Week 9 (Blackpool Night) Thoughts!

I'm excited for the Blackpool Night as Strictly always goes all out for this night! And that pening group dance was proof of that! This was such a jam packed group routine! :omg: I loved the slow start with Luba & Johannes, but then booom it got all so explosive when the pro dancers, celebs, judges and backing dancers were all apart of the dance. I felt like the celebs had a lot more dance content here than in other group routines so I loved that for this. This was such a fun, entertaining and exciting group routine! :bobo: Wow I felt like so much was going on and that it was hard to digest and take it all in, but it was really outstanding. :omg: Maybe one of my all-time favorite Blackpool group routines!

Bobby & Dianne - Jive: I didn't really expect Bobby to open up the show having gone just 2nd last week but then again, the Jive is one of the perfect show openers for this week so it makes sense. I'm kinda excited for this as I think the Jive could be a good dance for Bobby. lol this Rock factory intro especially with Dianne's "say thank you, Dianne" then Bobby saying it and her saying you're welcome. :haha: But oooo making that rock candy looked like a lot of fun. Onto the Jive, I thought this was great fun and a very entertaining dance from Bobby! :bobo: He looked like he was having a blast dancing and performing this and really looked like he was in his element. I especially loved the kicks & flicks that he produced here - they were sharp, precise and on point all the way throughout. He had great energy and kept that up through the dance and he kept up well with the backing dancers. Yeah I think this was a dance he's needed in his journey and his best dance yet! I think there were moments he kinda had a concentrated face in wanting to get the moves right but I just seen it in rare spots. He started the show off with a bang. I do agree with the judges 35... I would go with a 35 or 36 here. Aww I loved his shocked/happy reactions at the scores. :haha:

Ooooh aww yayy it's nice seeing 2019's Strictly champion, Kevlin Fletcher reading the Terms & Conditions. Lol at them playing "Jailhouse Rock" in the background (the song he danced his Jive to in Blackpool). How perfect. :haha:

Angela R & Kai - American Smooth: Aww it's nice that Angela R made it to Blackpool and I think the American Smooth is the perfect style for her to get here. It was nice getting to see her as a presenter of Come Dancing at Blackpool, though I wish we could have seen a bit more footage. 😮 But it's lovely for this moment to come full circle with her presenting Come Dancing to dancing on Strictly Come Dancing. This was a pretty cute and sweet dance. It suited her and she danced it nicely in the in hold sections. And she danced and performed it with such joy. Sadly when it came to the side by side sections, she got lost and was out of sync. Then there was another little mistake at the end section with the backing dancers. So it was a shame having those mistakes. :( The lifts she attempted with Kai and the backup dancers were impressive though. Omg Anton's "I don't care how it went" with how that came off. :dead: But lmaoo his comments of Angela's moment having a moment and then asking "who are you?" at the extra dancers. :lmao: Still a fairly nice dance but now that Angela had her Blackpool moment, I'm fine with her going at this point. I do agree with the judges score of 28. Ouch at the 6 from Craig (audience did not like that) but at least Anton's 8 made up for it.

Layton & Nikita - Couple's Choice: Ooooh I'm SO excited for Layton's Couple's Choice! It's really nice hearing his backstory and ooooh wow that he got a role as Billy Elliott, that is very impressive. Aww and loved seeing his mother, grandmother & grandfather in the intro video too. ❤️ This routine already started off with a bang with Layton doing the huge leg lift with his other leg on top of Nikita. 😮 Oooh this was quite a scandalous routine with all of that pole dancing at the start. :giggle: But woww, Layton tore this up and absolutely slayed this, as expected! :omg: I loved all of the tricks, leg lifts and showstopping moves that he did here. But then not only that, he really shone like a star with all of the burlesque, jazz, hip hop and other genres of dances that he performed here! He attacked all of his moves with so much sharpness and precision and it looked like a routine he was doing all of his life, at like his concerts or musicals. :omg: Oooh dearr at how critical Craig was with the sync not matching in the side by side parts and timing. Hmm fair comments from him though I didn't really get that from this dance. I agree with all of Motsi's comments instead. I loved every minute and second of the dance. :bobo: Hmm maybe the dance wasn't quite perfect 40, like the AT, but it was dangg close. I'd go with a 39 for this one (though could up it to a 40).

Annabel & Johannes - American Smooth: The Viennese Waltz based American Smooth is really perfect for Annabel so I have a good feeling this could be a great dance for her. lol Johannes' new term "gorglina"? That was cute and funny. :haha: Oooh I think Johannes danced the American Smooth two years in a row at Blackpool (though I think this one was much better). This was such a beautiful and stunning dance. She danced with so much pose, grace and elegance throughout the dance. She danced it lovely in hold and the spins and rotating was so smooth. lol Just as I was thinking the backing dancers weren't really needed for this dance - then comes that beautifully executed lift they did with Annabel where they lifted her up in the air and looked like a ballerina. :omg: The backing dancers were used fine but still think most of the dance could have been fine with just these two. Ahh yess, Motsi's comments. Ever since the Couple's Choice, Annabel has become such a new performer and really coming into her own lately. This dance is really proof of that. But oh, like Craig said something about her hand in hold kinda distracted me a bit and that could have been a bit more graceful but eh, it didn't take me out of the dance. I do agree with the judges score of 35 here.

Ellie & Vito - Charleston: Aww Ellie & Vito looked like they were having such a blast and fun time at the Blackpool amusement park. I would love to go to this. :haha:  Oooh I have been so excited and looking forward to Ellie doing the Charleston as I think this would be a dance that suits her so well! And it being to "Love Machine"? So perfect! Oooh hahaha the intro makes perfect sense for the routine. Wow... another routine that Ellie absolutely slayed and crushed here, which I knew she would. This dance was sooo full of high and non-stop energy, in which Ellie never missed a step or a beat. She handled all of the Charleston content with such confidence and ease. She had great footwork and swivels in there. But um.... those lifts? Those were CRAZY and absolutely insane. My goodness. :dead: Therewere so many lfits, lots of risky lifts in fact. There was one or maybe a few lifts that really scared me as it looked super risky and I nearly thought Vito was gonna drop her at times, omg. :dead: But then I loved how Vito would lift Ellie and then it transition to the backing dancers lifting and catching her. Yeah so much was going on in this dance and it was so fun and entertaining! :bobo: Yay for Craig's "best cross swivel footwork" he's seen. OMG Vito and his explanations of dances in the Clauditorium absolutely kills me. :dead: I would go for a 39 or 40 for this one.

Angela S & Carlos - Argentine Tango: Lol at how Angela S described her Argentine Tango as "lethal." I'm very interested to see how the AT goes for Angela S as I feel this dance could go either way for them. It's tough to call. They had a really fun intro video and aww Angela was so cute with how excited she was going to Blackpool. :haha: Back to their AT, ooooo woww Angela had me shook here. I was enjoying her journey as a whole but was thinking that her Week 3 Charleston was going to be the standout dance of her run. But then, she shut me up with this Argentine Tango. :dead: This was SO good. I loved all of the passion and intensity that she and Carlos had here. Her footwork and ganchos were so intricate, sharp and full of intense precision. Her legwork was insane and so mesmerszing to watch here. :omg: I also really loved that part where she went running to, jumped onto Carlos and they spun around! I had some serious chills while watching this. Dangg, I didn't know Angela had this in her and now I wish we had many more weeks of this Angela, ugh. :dead: WTH at Craig calling her legs stiff in the dance and that they weren't loose enough.... uhhh I don't get that. 😐 Aww at Carlos getting so emotional and crying in the Clauditorium with how the dance went. 😢 And aww Angela's parents traveling all the way from Ireland for this show! I think and agree that the score of 38 was fair - but that 8 from Craig was not cute. What was cute was their reactions to the 10s, especially crying mess Carlos!

Nigel & Katya - Quickstep: Oooh the Quickstep is one of the best styles to get at Blackpool so Nigel really lucked up with this style here. His rehearsals also looked very promising. lol I loved his "I ❤️ BPL" shirt. Ooh he was last at Blackpool at the late 90s with one of his musicals. lol this intro video only showing them going to Blackpool and not what they did there - I was expecting more there, lol. :haha: Onto the Quickstep, I thought this was a really fun and entertaing dance to close the show. I thought Nigel owned it on the solo parts, especially when he was doing his theatrical/jazzy/tap stuff at the start of the dance. He was in his zone and so natural there. He did well on the side by side stuff. I did think the Quicstekp section was a bit more inconsistent. I thought it was mostly really good and strong - he partnered Katya well and traveled across the stage well. I did feel in the second half of the Quickstep, he got a little shaky and made a few little iffy mistakes in there. Dang, it's a shame about those mistakes that creep up in his dances.... and it's been happening so often when it shouldn't be at this stage of the season. :( But still, I thought it was a really good/great dance. Aww at how disappointed Nigel was. :( The 8s were fair... and think I would go with a 32 or 33 here.

Rankings:
1. Layton & Nikita - Couple's Choice / Ellie & Vito - Charleston
3. Angela S & Carlos - Argentine Tango
4. Bobby & Dianne - Jive
5. Annabel & Johannes - American Smooth
6. Nigel & Katya - Quickstep
7. Angela R & Kai - American Smooth

Ugh can't figure out my favorite between Layton or Ellie this week. :dead: But really this was such a strong night of dances - really loved my Top 5, really liked #6 and liked #7 so a night of really strong dances!

Might be unpopular or uncommon but I'm fine with Ellie or Layton not getting a perfect score. They were incredible and they ate but it gave off 10/10 but not necessarily A Strictly 40/40. More like a 39.  Maybe it's because it's strictly and my expectations are slightly higher than DWTS.

Kinda like Xochitl's Tango for Whitney Night. (Except Layton & Ellie ate her up and would easily be DWTS 40/40 Material by far)

Week 9 Results show thoughts!

Oooh opening group routine to "Music from a Sushi Restaurant"? FUN!  Oooh and Carlos & Nancy dancing lead in this routine. I always stan and love them dancing together. This was such a stylish and slick routine. Lots of funky and slick Jazz choreo here. Oooh and they bust into "Late Night Talking." Love this song even more! Then I knew "As It Was" was coming up next to close the routine. So we got a whole Harry Styles medley routine here. This was a cool and fun group routine - though not as epic as Saturday night's opening group routine but that was kinda to be expected.

- Onto the results, I was not expecting Annabel & Johannes to be called safe first. Oh snapp, especially as I was expecting them to be one of the couples in danger. :dead: Angela S also safe as she deserves after that AT! But awww Bobby & Dianne are the first couple to land in the Bottom 2. 😮 Wow everyone shocked. I am too, actually. I might have thought of them potentially in danger but they were like the 4th or 5th couple I was actually expecting to be down there (only thought Ellie and Angela S would have been even more safe, Layton to a lesser extent). 😮 Aww I feel bad for them, especially as I thought this wsa his best dance, but Bobby handled it well and with a positive attitude. I wonder if his fan vote is low or if people assumed he would be safe so they voted for others?

- Madness performed... but oh, the song wasn't even said. Looking at the Youtube channel, it's "C'est La Vie." Oooh lots of pros dancing in this one! Michelle & Neil, Nadiya & Graziano and Jowita & Gorka. Wow Nadiya in that solo couple section with Graziano. She was amazing and I could not keep my eyes off of her. I also loved watching Michelle in this too. ❤️

- Craig explains why he ruined Ellie's perfect 40 he didn't give a 10 for Ellie's Charleston because he felt that dance was too dainty & controlled and he wanted her go more wild and lose more control. He wanted herto be more goofy with it though he stands by her footwork being amazing.

- The next two safe are Ellie/Vito and Layton & Nikita, which I was expecting and hoping for so yayy for them both being safe.  I also had a feeling it would be down to Nigel & Katya and Angela R & Kai to be the last couple safe/in the Bottom 2. As expected, it was Angela R & Kai to land in the Bottom 2. Lol her saying the same thing as Bobby of "if you're gonna be in the Bottom 2, might as well be/perform it here." :haha: All in all, a fair result here.

- The Bottom 2 dance is Bobby & Dianne vs. Angela & Kai. I loveed Bobby's Jive once again and thought it was just as great as it was the first time. This dance was such great fun. Sad he landed in the Bottom 2 for this one but I did love seeing it again so I guess it works out fine because of that? Angela R's American Smooth was sweet, nice and adorable to watch again. Sadly still some mistakes. Ooh I did notice a little stumbly moment while they were dancing in hold. Ooh and she was probably even more off on the side by side parts this time around. It was still a nice dance. But  this was an easy dance-off to decide as Bobby definitely won it for me. Aww at how emotional Dianne was awaiting the judges results. Craig, Motsi and Anton all voted to save Bobby. Shirley also would have voted to save Bobby too.

- Aww as I said in my performance show write-up, I'm glad that Angela R got her full circle Blackpool moment and got to dance here. She went out with a lovely ballroom dance but I do think she's given all she could give in her run. That's especially with thinking how she's had the Jive/Salsa/Samba all remaining so I think it's for the best that we spared her from those dances. :haha: The things and dancing that she's done and accomplished as a 79 year old is truly impressive and astonishing, honestly! :omg: She should certainly be proud of what she's accomplished, and her final words was really so sweet and touching! I love how she gave all of the pros their props and then gave Kai his props too. ❤️ Lol Angela mentioning their 51 year age difference (Kai being 28, Angela being 79)... and awww at Angela's words making Kai and how emotional he was getting to her words. 😢

Week 10 songs & styles spoilers:

- Angela S & Carlos will be dancing to "I Will Survive." The style wasn't mentioned, but I am wondering thinking if this could be a Cha-Cha or Salsa? Maybe even a Couple's Choice but probably not as that would have been mentioned. This should be a really fun dance from them.

- Nigel & Katya are dancing to "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Ugh no style said again. Oh wait, he's done a VW. So maybe this could be for a Rumba? A Waltz is another guess but this seems too fast for it.

- Latyon & Nikita will be dancing to "It's Oh So Quiet." Oooh another fun and epic song there. This one screams... American Smooth to me. It could also be a Foxtrot too. I believe Panti & Denys on DWTSIrl did their AS to this song so kinda checks out.

This is all very fair. I do like how Strictly are more strict/harsher on giving out 40s, thanks to Craig. Though sometimes it can be super frustrating but that's the way it's supposed to be. :haha:

I think that would have been more fair to critique, as I thought her footwork was pretty incredible and the standout of the routine.

I also think we got a pretty strong/fantastic Final 6 for this series. I'm really happy with it! Layton & Ellie are the standouts and truly brings it each week. Then Angela S, Annabel, Bobby and Nigel, while not as consistent/standout'ish, all have had their fair share of standout routines and brought something great to this series. I did think we lost a bit of spark without Amanda for a few weeks and I feel she could have brought some great dances at this stage, but I think we got a strong Top 6 and all are deserving of being here.

1. Layton & Nikita / Ellie & Vito (I'm at that stage where I don't know who I prefer now)

3. Angela & Carlos

4. Bobby & Dianne

5. Nigel & Katya

6. Annabel & Johannes

Stuck on my Top 2. My 3-5 changes weekly.

Even though she deservedly left ,and although I prefer her to Bobby by far and  I would probably put around the 7th-8th range as well, I'm genuinely going to miss Angela R. She got to have her full circle moment of getting to Blackpool and the things she accomplished at 79 were incredible. I enjoyed  her and Kai together and honestly they were one of my favorites this season. She is an absolute legend and can be proud of herself for making it this far.❤️ (Also with her casting I kinda saw how lot of british people are lowkey ageist.)  I genuinely think if she was like 15-20 years younger she would be more of a frontrunner and kinda give Ellie/Layton a decent run for their money.  Also hope Kai gets a younger ringer next year. Angela was one but she was inhibited by her age and AJ was a naturally talented dancer. Anyways to get  back on track Angela R was truly a delight and joy to watch and I loved her and Kai together.

Angela Rippon & Anton du Beke
Jive - Two Hearts - Phil Collins

(originally danced by Patsy & Anton, series 3)

It’s happened, it’s finally happened, all series long so far the judges have been skirting around the fact Angela can’t move at much speed and the Latin, while colourful and crowd-pleasing, is still Anton-flavoured Latin, and now it’s finally hit a wall, and so all these issues have to be confronted at once. She retains all of her balletic poise, but the whole shebang lacks energy, any sense of her leaving the ground (despite this being Blackpool with its specially-sprung floor) or even a bit of pizzazz to sell the dance. Every time Anton gets a half-decent hoofer (Lesley, Patsy, Laila) it’s said they can only top the leaderboard once… has Angela’s time been and gone?

The jive is where many a mature lady contender comes a cropper (Dr Pamela did, I know Debbie got 9s but it was the semi and it was still a bit bobbins) and Ange is no exception. Also, now Eddie and Karen took this song and span it off into a whole-ass Fresh Prince rip-off, which classic sitcom should Ange and Ant recreate on the Blackpool stage, and why is it Keeping Up Appearances?

4, 6, 7, 6 = 23

Dancing the samba, will Kylie Babbington and her dance partner Matthew Cutler please take to the floor?

Blackpool Week - Leaderboard

Christina Cole & Artem Chigvintsev - 40
Don Gilét & Kristina Rihanoff - 39
Becky Downie & Vincent Simone - 34
Jeff Brazier & Ola Jordan - 33
Richard Fleeshman & Natalie Lowe - 33
Mel Giedroyc & Pasha Kovalev - 32
Jane McDonald & Ian Waite - 30
Angela Rippon & Anton du Beke - 23
Kylie Babbington & Matthew Cutler - 23

Kinda love that Angela's been on the bottom in both fantasy and real Blackpool:dead:

This is all wonderfully said on Angela R. I wasn't as big on her as you were but she's definitely accomplished a lot of wonderful things and so much on her time on the show. Ooooh she could have been like a Pamela Stephenson or a Debbie McGee had she done the show sooner. 😮 And yess I also hope Kai can get someone younger next year. He's had two older women two years in a row and did well with them (well moreso with Angela). But it's not fair to Kai and he should have a variety of age in partners.

Week 10 Styles and songs are revealed!

Angela & Carlos Cha Cha to I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor

Annabel & Johannes Paso Doble to Espana Cani by Trad
Ellie & Vito Argentine Tango to Bills Bills Bills by Destiny’s Child
Bobby & Dianne Couples Choice to This Woman’s Work by Maxwell
Nigel & Katya Rumba to Its All Coming back to me Now by Celine Dion
Layton & Nikita American Smooth to Its All So Quiet by Bjork

Thoughts:

- Oop, now back to being worried for Angela S on the Cha-Cha.

:dead: She's got an iconic song choice but party Latin's haven't been good for her. It's especially tricky this late in the competition with no real weak links. I do see her towards the bottom of the leaderboard and possibly in danger.
- Annabel's got an actual classic Paso song. She's been showing growth so I'm more confident for her to pull off the performance now than I would have been a month ago.
- Omgg an AT to "Bills Bills Bills"? I was not expecting that. Lovee the song + style, so am looking forward to this. And at least we'll get a great routine here and can get the Sean Spicer version out of our memories. :giggle:
- Ahhh this was the Couple's Choice I was thinking/wondering if Bobby would get. Perfect for him to get after his Bottom 2 trip. This should be a beautiful and emotional dance as it should be dedicated/about his mother. 😢 I got tears already but looking forward to this. I think he should be able to make a Bottom 2 bounce with this. If not, then probably nothing else can. It will also be nice seeing Dianne out of the Street style for CC too.
- Oooh, love Layton's song for the AS. It's camp and full of pizazz and yeah this should be another dance Layton should slay! Curious to see the Waltz and Foxtrot content in this too.
- Rumba could be tricky for Nigel but I can see him doing well with it. Maybe moreso performance-wise than technically. I can see him being towards the bottom of the leaderboard. This will be another tough test for his fanbase.
