Someone648 Ranks the Season 23 Blind Auditions (#1: The Finale)

Someone648

Recommended Posts

Yeah I'm stealing @jarmon's idea out of boredom. We'll see how long I keep up with it :haha:

If you know me, you might have a sense of what kind of contestants I gravitate towards and which ones I don't. This isn't a ranking of how much I like them overall, how I feel about them as people, or even how I feel about their battles/overall odds on the show. I'm literally just ranking one performance from each of them lol.

So for the record... I'm gonna complain about quite a few auditions, but for what it's worth, I believe all the successful contestants deserved a chair turn and can obviously outsing me in their sleep. Nothing against them personally lol.

And of course, I'm stealing the hints idea, too. I do crosswords in my free time so this is 100% what I'm into lol. Trying not to overlap with jarmon's hints though! ;)

HINTS FOR PART 1:

40. This one, unfairly, doesn't really need a clue.

39. A lot of runs... or perhaps not enough.

38. I could've recommended a plumber

37. Actually, they were first.

36. While putting this song choice this low may come as a shocker coming from me, one might say it's no surprise given the quality of the performance.

Hope there's some more interest? Not much to do on the non-Voice days anyways. Feel free to make your guesses or give feedback and complain ;)

39. Chloe?? I'm not really sure what the clue means but I feel like she would be this low lol

38. I feel like this is either Tasha or Kylee and either way this is criminally low 😭

40. Alyssa (as the only montage, she’s an easy pick for the spot unfortunately)

39. Chloe (she’s a pro-level track athlete, so that + the rendition she did of her blinds song makes it seem like it this clue refers to her)

38. ???

37. ???

36. Kason (No Surprise is another Daughtry song + a lot of people who were intrigued by his blinds song choice were underwhelmed by the actual performance)

Another one, that’s exciting. I guess since I estimated my placements already on jarmon’s, I will do something different and try to compare your placements and see what placements I agree with more (there’s a few people from the last ranking that I hope get better placements)

- Alyssa Lazar :(((

- Chloe Abbott? (she’s a runner lol)

- Tasha Jessen (She wants to “go”)

- ???

- Mary Kate Connor (I know you love Grace Potter and perhaps she didn’t perform to your standards?)

PART 1: I Hope That Song Choice Was Picked For You...

(Patience as I figure out formatting please lol)

40. Alyssa Lazar (Team Chance)

Like I said, it was probably unfair to put her here but there's no other choice, unfortunately. We got approximately 11 seconds of her singing. Frankly, those 11 seconds could've placed her somewhere in the mid-20's at lowest, or potentially much higher in my ranking, but I can't justify an 11-second performance compared to the rest. Just awful that she's the only one that had to deal with this. I've run out of complaints/rants to give to NBC about montages over 23 seasons. I get the reason why they need to montage and also understand why they pick certain performances to montage over others, but montaging ONE contestant just seems like a low blow.

Clue: This one, unfairly, doesn't really need a clue.

Basically, it's just not fair that she was the only montage.

39. Chloe Abbott (Team Chance)

So now we get into the ones that I can fairly rank. Clearly, Chloe's a more than competent vocalist. She picked a classic that's been nailed by previous contestants, so there's plenty of opportunity for her to impress, but what she ended up delivering fell pretty flat for me. She didn't need to outdo MaKenzie Thomas or try too many absurd runs, but other than going a little bit higher (which she did sound shaky on), the whole thing just kind of felt boring. Either a different song choice or a different version of the song would've helped her out here.

Clue: A lot of runs... or perhaps not enough

She's a runner and a devoted athlete, probably familiar with daily runs. I also wish this cover would've showed off some more dynamics (like better runs).

38. Mary Kate Connor (Team Blake)

I appreciate Mary Kate coming back and I know her return made a bunch of IDF users happy. As far as her audition goes, I fear that the song was too tall of an order for her. Here we have a case of another song that's done wonders for several other contestants in the past (Shelby Brown, Amanda Brown, etc.), but to my ears, it wasn't the right fit for her. Every big "staaaaaars" she let out was wobbly and shaky to me. Maybe it's nerves, maybe it's inexperience, but I couldn't enjoy it that much. Proud of her for coming back and definitely looking forward to her battle. Hoping it's a better song choice.

Clue: I could've recommended a plumber.

Basically, she was a leaked contestant that I didn't end up enjoying. Had I known (and had I had any pull with NBC), I would've selected a different leak from the episode.

37. Michael B. (Team Niall)

I don't have too much to say about this one actually? Michael's clearly a good vocalist, and listening to his covers outside of the show, I just wonder how this performance came to be. I can appreciate the more instrumental take and how bubbly he made it feel instead of edgy, but that only worked to an extent before it became cheesy and a bit awkward. It felt like he was doing karaoke to a Glee cover, but NBC couldn't afford a Warbler outfit. Seems like an incredibly nice guy with a ton of appeal for IDF, but this one was a letdown for me.

Clue: Actually, they were first.

With all the auditions aired and some confusing source feedback now cleared up, we know that Michael was in fact Niall's first team member.

36. Kason Lester (Team Blake)

Ooooh now this is one that pains me. I was rooting hard for this one to be great. Love Daughtry and I'm always in the mood for a rocker on this show. Unfortunately, it feels like the song was way too big for him (and frankly, there's better Daughtry songs I'd love to see covered on this show...). While I do like his gravelly voice and think he's got an interesting tone, the whole thing just ended up being kind of awkward to sit through, especially since the song does get kind of repetitive. I simply was not blown away, what else could I say?

Clue: While putting this song choice this low may come as a shocker coming from me, one might say it's no surprise given the quality of the performance.

It's no secret that I love rock and love Daughtry, but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. Also, "No Surprise" is another Daughtry song that I think he would've done much better on ;)

Clues for Part 2:

35. A maverick in their own right as well.

34. They've been wearing the number 3 for much, much longer than Chance has...

33. Not quite Georgia, but not quite Nashville either.

32. Hang on, it's a bumpy ride.

31. This singer could've been related to another contestant, but their name on the show doesn't demonstrate it.

Lmao I totally called the “No Surprise” wording as being another Daughtry-related clue.

Anyway:

35. ???

34. Jerome Godwin III (third generation of his name)

33. Grace West??? (Maybe It Was Memphis was her blind audition song, and that’s one of two guesses I’ve got for this spot)

32. D. Smooth (His audition’s reception was rocky at best, and smooth is the opposite of bumpy)

31. ???

  • Someone648 changed the title to Someone648 Ranks the Season 23 Blind Auditions (40-36 Posted!)

My thoughts

Alyssa Lazar- I understand the placement from both you and jarmon, and I agree it’s unfair that she was the only montage. They had room to show her audition in full.

Chloe Abbott- Both of you gave this audition the same placement again, and I agree that it was one of the weakest auditions this season

Mary Kate Connor- You and jarmon have drastically different placements (38 and Top 16). Mine would be somewhere around the middle of those. Good tone but I agree that she lacked the power of both Shelby and Amanda. I agree that she was the worst audition leak, and I would have personally leaked Kate instead

Michael B- Another performance where my ranking is in the middle of both you and jarmon. I like his theatrical voice, but this was the wrong song choice.

Kason Lester- For the third time, you and jarmon are twinning, and I would have Kason around here too. Chris Daughtry is not easy to cover and this felt like karaoke.

So yeah, either you both have the same rankings or my placements fall in the middle of yours. Maybe the next set I’ll side with one of your placements more

- Honestly, hard to disagree here. No objections. I also really was hoping Kason was better than he actually was because of the song choice and lane.

I relistened to all 40 auditions and found my opinion on a lot of auditions changed (for better or worse) than when I originally heard them/ranked them in other threads. I definitely anticipated Kason being higher than he ended up being on here before the season, and even after my first listen to his audition. But yeah, he was pretty stale in his audition, sadly.

dont understand most of these, i think Holly for 33, not sure if I buy Sorelle, don’t understand Alex but it feels right, and is walkers a reference to his song choice? hurricane??

I’d have Mary Kate somewhere in the 20s probably, but it makes sense why you placed her there and at least it wasn’t one of the people I guessed :giggle:

I think 34 is Jerome Godwin rather than Sorelle because he actually has the 3 (III) in his name. Wonder if 33 actually is Grace, although I can’t really make sense of the Georgia part of the clue?

As a Hello Sunday and Kat Hammock Stan, I'm sure you'd have some interesting takes. ☺️

In all seriousness I'd definitely tune in. I liked your takes during the KO polls me and a few others made. I also kinda wanna do one but my normal posts on contestants are long enough as it is, lol
