Songs contestants should never sing (or never sing again)

"That's What I Like" by Bruno Mars. I really loved DeAndre Nico and Shawn Sounds (they were my snowflakes), and I thought they both did an astoundingly awful job with it. It just isn't made for a music show. That song is a snowflake melter.

And "Cuz I Love You" by Lizzo. I've never liked anyone else performing that song.

Come to think of it, I kinda hope no one tries ANY Lizzo songs anytime soon.

Shadale did the song justice imo

I always thought Tamara Jade's audition was one of the best of the season, even though it's reception here was lukewarm/indifferent.

What both have in common though was that they were prelive, so that may have covered up the flaws of the performances.

Yeah, agreed with this one. I think Morgan Taylor this season did as well as she reasonably could but the verses with sing rapping is just really not suited for a singing competition style. I guess it’s a good song to show attitude but there are plenty more vocal suited songs with just as much attitude. I remember Ciana from S20 who wasn’t going to win against Pia anyway, but that song choice really sunk her.

Then someone did ADT this season and didn’t get a chair turn, I actually though there were some good vocal moments, but the song overall just didn’t work.

There were a lot of factors that resulted in that lackluster reception. One was that people had high expectatives on both her and Desz and once their auditions aired, they (mainly Tamara) didn't fulfill that expectatives, hence IDF was dissapointed. Overall, people had high expectatives for that season due to the late premiere, we were desperate, and since we knew it was gonna a short season we were really expecting that at least the talent was good (I personally think it could have been way better)

Also, at the time , Leann Rimes a.k.a as "Sun" did an excellent cover of it in The Masked Singer. Yeah, when comparing the two, it was clear which one was better.

For me, I think S19 was easily the best of the short seasons. Carter and DeSz were great, and even though John Holiday underperformed in the later episodes he's still hugely talented. Plus I'm not a big country fan, but the two country or country-adjacent artists we had were some of the best too imo. I wouldn't have even been mad if Jim won after his finale performance.

(also we got Sid Kingsley's Tennessee Whiskey lol)

Unless you were referring to just the auditions, which you may have a point. But there were still some great ones imo.

Never sing "My Heart Will Go On" or Celine songs/versions in general. You'll likely flop, or just pale in comparison.

If you ever want to risk it, you better show the hell up or get ready to go home.

as someone who’s not a Celine super fan, I’ve enjoyed covers of the song. i suspect that people generally find it hard to enjoy covers of singers they really really like. i remember at one point disliking a performance because it cut too many lyrics out of a song i liked :haha:

also on the topic of cuz i love you, brooke simpson did a good job with it on AGT

"brutal" by Olivia Rodrigo, I remember this song being suggested a lot to Alyssa, but it seems like a very huge bus because of how limited on notes the song is, not to mention the fast beats too.

"Sail" by Awolnation is in the same pace, and I will not accept any more versions other than Kat Robichaud (Sasha and Oli from TVUK were great too!)

Singing "Brutal" is like asking to be eliminated tbh 😭

Brooke Simpson did a really good version of Cuz I Love You.

As for songs that shouldn't be sung, most Queen songs honestly. Unless you can have the pipes do them justice (or at least, half or even quarter justice) like Jordan Smith or Joshua Vacanti.

Yeah, my deepest issue with the song is that every time I hear a singer trying to do it, they sound breathless on the verses, and they sound like they're trying to keep up with the fast pace of the song - and they have to almost overcompensate during the choruses. I liked Tamara Jade just fine outside of that performance, and I think she had the best "Cuz I Love You" overall, but she ran into the same problems Ciana and Morgan Taylor did. All 3 of those singers had great voices, but that song doesn't do anyone any favors.

I can't imagine any other Lizzo songs that would be good for a singing competition. I love Lizzo, but her songs are just NOT flattering to people who have a relatively tiny window of time to show how impressive their voice is. But I understand why people choose her songs (because they're fun, sassy, and full of personality).

And about "That's What I Like" -

I listened to her audition again, and she was absolutely breathless in a few moments (especially on the first "Lucky for you, that's what I like"). She did an incredible job with it anyway, but I also think her audition is about as good as you can get with that song, and it's extremely difficult anyway. (It honestly also sounds like there's some editing/tuning on a few notes her performance because it's pre-live - DeAndre and Shawn doomed themselves live.)
