Has he said anything remotely similar to this before?

No, but I'm refering that he sometimes tells them that via some of the song choices his team gets ("One Dance" for Jasom Warrior, "Lips of an Angel" for Morgan Frazier, "Parachute" for Casi Joy, etc). He clearly didnt need them, so he just let them have those songs.

Last season was basically the exception, since his team got great choices (the IS was different). The previous year, he gave Sid, who sang three songs done multiple times on the show and are Minivan friendly, a modern song that was very obscure. Also don’t forget about when Kendra Checketts got Bad Guy (though that may have been picked before he stole her back)

I dont think he really bussed anyone in S18, though. Joanna and Joei's songs were similar to what they do off show.

Correct me if I'm wrong but his S10 team was fine too. Probably Paxton got the worst song choice of the bunch but Blake still saved him.

We technically don't know who made the decision, so we might be placing too much blame or credit on the coaches for song choices. In some cases, they might simply go along with TPTB or what a contestant chose.

For the blind audition, contestants are reportedly given a long list of cleared songs. They select 25 that they feel capable of performing and rank those first, second, etc. Then the music department or producers match all the contestants with an audition song — which isn't always their first choice.

For later rounds, some contestants say they chose one of three songs. Others claim they were given a song to sing.

When Pete Mroz interviewed The Joy Reunion on Artist 2 Artist, it was obvious that the trio was bewildered about their battle song. Their first thought was the English Christmas carol, but singing "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" was apparently a letdown. The battle discussion begins at 51:56.

They aren't the only contestants who have expressed disappointment about a song, but we don't know for certain who is really responsible for questionable song choices.

Contestants have also disclosed making a list of songs. They should carefully consider that list, because they might end up having to sing the worst one on the show.

Here's what executive producer Audrey Morrissey had to say about it in 2017.

I can tell you this: regardless of what people may say at the moment, there is no person that goes on that stage that the song that they ultimately perform and end up with isn't a song that derived from their list, or was inspired by their list. Or that they did not raise their hand and say, 'I don't feel good about this.' At any point they can, and their song will be changed.

For anyone who hasn't already seen it, Amanda Lee Peers wrote a six-part story about her season 7 journey on The Voice. (There are also three segments about her life after the show.) Taylor John Williams won their Team Gwen battle, but Amanda gives detailed information about the audition process and battle round.
