Live Music

With live music slowly returning, it might be fun to share recent live music videos you run across as artists hit the road.  The idea would be to post noteworthy live clips, whether because of performance, rare appearance, unusual cover, or some such, regardless of genre or style.  I don't intend to moderate but would enjoy seeing your posts.

I'll start with two recent encore covers by Jason Isbell (one of my favs) and some classic Jackson Brown from a concert in August.

Isbell - Gimme Shelter with Brittney Spencer - Charlie Watts tribute (ed. better video)

Britteny Spencer, a country singer getting some attention lately, sings the Merry Clayton part - kills it.  She has been opening some shows for Isbell.

Isbell - Driver 8 (REM) - Athens, Ga

Jackson Browne - Doctor My Eyes - 8.25.21

a week before that I went to Nashville and some some concerts there. This was a VIP exclusive Carly Pearce performance of a song that's on her brand new album that went #1 on iTunes.

Here's some other performances from that night.

Tenille Arts song that went #1 on country radio. It was the first ever song to go number #1 on country radio that was sung by a woman written by a woman and produced by a woman.

Carly Pearce's #1 song that was with Lee Brice originally but was performanced with Charles Kelley from Lady A instead since he was there.

Lady A's biggest song.

went to Whiskey Jam in Nashville to see Gracee Shriver from the Voice perform.

I ran across this gem in the course of a different search. It's not recent but it's certainly live.

If you don't know them or only know a couple of their hits, the Bangles were a 60's-influenced, post-punk, all-woman pop rock band with great harmonies and a string of top-ten hits that included two 1s and two 2s. This video features a number of songs from their excellent first album as well as their first big hits from the second. It's a lot of fun to watch -- like a trip to 1986.

BTW, if you hate Manic Monday and Walk Like an Egyptian, give them a try anyway.  The rest of the stuff is great, and those two come at the end. ;)

Bangles, Live in Pittsburgh 1986 (approx 60 mins)

Indie/folk artist Lucy Dacus appeared at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 1, 2021.

Lucy's a delight. Great songwriter - Thumbs hits me like a brick. These are all good crowd videos (especially the singalong in Night Shift) with good sound, though I could complain a little about distance and lighting from this angle if pressed. Still, glad we have them.

boygenius - Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus - at Brooklyn Steel. 28 mins

Wasn't sure what to expect of these three as a trio but loved this. If you want to sample one, try Salt in the Wound at about 17:50 - good song and harmonies, really fine guitar lead from Julien.  The Pitchfork video is excellent and it gave a strong review for the EP. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/boygenius-boygenius-ep/

Joni Mitchell & James Taylor - Live in Concert at the Paris Theatre in 1970 - BBC Radio Broadcast Sept. 1970. 52 mins.

A throwback. In September 1970 the BBC broadcast Joni Mitchell and James Taylor live in an acoustic concert at the Paris Theater in London. Sound is quite good, though it can be tinny in the highs. It's very present.

JT had released Sweet Baby James in February 1970. Joni had released Ladies of the Canyon in April. JT was working on songs that would be part of 1971's Mudslide Slim and the Blue Horizon (Close Your Eyes here), and Joni was working on songs for 1971's Blue (Carey, California here). JT says elsewhere that Close Your Eyes was written for Joni.

They mostly trade songs, now classics. Their intro bits are brief, often clever and eccentric - JT's deadpan bit with Steamroller, Joni's PBS-serious introduction to her dulcimer and, oh btw, her new song Carey. The closing duets on Circle Game and Close Your Eyes are worth the listening time.

Btw, if you make it through, Joni's friend in Winnipeg who wrote Sugar Mountain and inspired Circle Game is Neil Young.
