One of the four movies I haven't seen. Based on the trailer I don't think I'd like it, but you never know. Christopher Abbott should be in every movie though and my bed.

Another one of the four movies I haven't seen. I was planning on watching it...but yeah no time. From the trailers it seemed like just some random cheesy Netflix movie that was forgotten about two weeks after it came out. Maybe it's better than that? Maybe it's not idk. I'm just waiting for the day for Millie Bobby Brown to turn 18 and be freed from her parents.

Radha Blank is gonna be a name we're gonna want to remember. Her debut film demonstrated a lot of passion and talent and I look forward to following her career. This reminded me a lot of Frances Ha, which is one of my favorite movies, just the 40 year old version of it lol. Maybe it's the black & whiteness of it all, but they're both stories about finding yourself and your passion. This isn't a perfect movie, but it's one of the most creative and fun of a very weak year and I'm glad it made it to the top 15 here. Also "Poverty Porn" was the best original song of the year.

One of the four movies I haven't seen, but probably the one I'd most likely see. The problem with these Netflix movies is I'd usually watch them alone, but I don't like watching action movies alone. I think they're boring alone, you gotta be with friends or in a big theater. So I'm just not gonna sit down and watch some netflix action movie alone.

I once said that this movie was FINE and people acted like I murdered their dog. But that's what this movie is. Perfectly fine. I watched it and I went "that was fine." It doesn't excite me. But it's not bad. It's fine.

Alex

Quote

I completely agree with Megan. Tbh, I forgot the movie even existed until I was compiling the 2020 films at the start of this game. It's a completely average Disney movie that didn't make much of an impact on the canon. I tanked it because I thought it would be a bigger threat than it actually was, I didn't expect all the polarizing ratings lol.

A film that filled me with hope and dread. I cycle between being super into politics and not into it all and I watched this documentary at a time when I was really into politics so I was obsessed. The drama of it all and how terrifying teenage boys are. Idk if I'm allowed to hate kids, but I really wanted to punch that Ben Shapiro wannabe in the face. But I stalked the kid he helped elect after the movie ended and apparently he's a pansexual ultra leftist so lolpwnt. Rene and Steven ultimately did That though. I will be the first in line to see Girls State.

I am ranking this lower not because I don't like it and think it's not a great film, I do like it and I think it's great. It's just that some movies have to rank lower and for petty reasons I am ranking Boys State lower. Not petty reasons against Steven (though it may feel that way considering the movies he moved on are 18 & 19 in my rankings) but petty reasons against my high school. I wasn't selected for Girls State. Despite being the top girl of my class. TBF none of the other women in the Top like 20 were selected but STILL. My brother was selected for Boys State. He said it was just like this movie.

Probably the movie of 2020 I spent the most time with. I've watched it multiple times, read a lot of takes about it, talked about it with everyone I know, etc. If a film can make me do that, I do think it's successful to some disagree. It's messy, it's imperfect, it's controversial, but I also think it's rather brilliant. Carey Mulligan is severely underrated and I'm so glad to see her getting her props here. Emerald Fennell is extremely daring and interesting and I'm so excited to see what she'll be doing next. This movie has aged really well for me and I think it's just gonna continue to rise. And I mean, it's use of "Stars are Blind" made it top 15 worthy from the beginning

I assumed no one saw this and it wouldn't have a chance in hell at making the end, but I'm so glad it did. I keep going back and forth between this and another movie as my favorite of 2020. It's so delightfully weird and I just really enjoyed the time I spent with it. I was thrown into this very bizarre world and I loved every second inside of it. Why is Gina Rodriguez so messy because I really love her career trajectory.

Megan

Another movie I campaigned for so it shouldn't be a surprise that it ends up high on my list. It's not a perfect movie. It's messy and bizarre and perfectly Miranda July and perfectly 2020.

This was actually my winner prediction so I'm shocked it didn't even make it to the next set. I thought Sound of Metal was pretty universally beloved, but I guess it was more underseen than I anticipated. Either way, I loved the movie so much. Amazing script, brilliantly directed, so well acted (Paul Raci's monologue is probably my favorite acting moment of the year), and just a really important story that isn't told as much as it should be. Also probably my favorite movie ending, since a lot of my favorite movies of the year didn't stick the ending as well as I had hoped. I took a pretty big hit with three of my top five in this set :dead:.

Unfortunately for Sound of Metal it's the only movie of this Top 20 I was not really familiar with and don't have a strong opinion on since I went to party on a BOAT instead of watching all the movies this weekend.

following up. Onward is a fine movie. But definitely a step back from the trio of preceding Pixar films (Coco, Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2). And also quite frustrating that these stories are always centered around brothers and men. It seems that the mom's role and the Manticore's role are both really under-utilized. It's hard to express how much the queer women community has been waiting for this movie. Before The Half of It, Alice Wu has directed exactly one (1) other movie: the 2005 lesbian classic Saving Face. In the 15 years between the two movies, Alice Wu's 2005 lesbian cult classic wasn't a one off. The film is a rare queer coming-of-age film where the focus isn't necessarily romance (though there's romance) or coming out. Ellie Chu is gay and that's only part of her character. More importantly she's a Chinese Immigrant who is faced with the decision to leave her widowed father to attend the college of her dreams and the friendship she grows with a boy. And has many of the same themes of familial obligation in Chinese immigrant families as Saving Face. It's a fantastic movie and if you haven't seen it I'd strongly recommend. Obviously. I'm ranking it #2.

After Onward people were all ready to be like "The Decline of Pixar?????" and then Soul came out and people are like "Pixar is back." Ignoring the fact that preceding Onward was Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2, and Coco. All excellent movies. Also, TBH, Pixar has never been the best animation or the most unique stories in animation. It has always kind of nailed that sweet spot of balancing everything out and producing nearly perfect movies. This is good. It's not my favorite Pixar movie. And in a messy year of 2020, I gravitated towards messy movies.

Alex

Quote

Tbh I tanked it because I wanted Wolfwalkers to be the highest animated movie and I was so close 😭. If I ranked it honestly, it would've only been around the 7-8 range though. I thought it was very good, I wasn't blown away, but I enjoyed it!

I think stage-to-film adaptations can be pretty trick. Sometimes they feel a bit too much like just a filmed play. Spoiler alert for the 2021 rankdown that may or may not happen, but The Father defies the odds brilliantly. Ma Rainey, on the other hand, falls into a lot of those traps. While I don't love the direction or script, the film is carried by some amazing performances. Viola Davis continues to prove she's a master of her craft, Colman Domingo is the unsung hero of the film, and Chadwick Boseman is, of course, absolutely brilliant :broken:

But when I finished watching this I was completely blown away. Also Delroy Lindo's disgusting snub continues to prove the Oscars are a joke.

OBVIOUSLY my first pick to move to safety is my top movie of 2020. I know objectively that this isn't the best movie of 2020 but I don't necessarily care about objectivity in evaluating "art" (all encompassing of things like paintings to music to movies etc). I think to understand why I like this movie so much you have to look at my book case and see my collection of Birds of Prey TPBs. Once you see that then you understand that this is a movie I've been waiting a LONG time for. I'm also a Black Canary STAN. So to finally get it and to have it be as good as it was is a dream come true for me personally. (The fact that they invited Gail Simone to set and it got her glowing approval despite the fact that it doesn't include OG BoP Barbara Gordon doesn't hurt either). The movie is filled with chaotic and frenetic energy fitting of its "title" character Harley Quinn and overall it's just so much fun. Also a fun fact that this was the first blockbuster budget movie produced by, directed by, written by, and starring women. Now DC give me the Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy movie I deserve!

Rei

Quote

The best movie from the DCEU

Alex

Quote

Lol. Luckily I'm not overly passionate about any 2020 movies to care about a B-rate superhero movie winning. I enjoyed Birds of Prey! It was a fun time at the movies (also little did I know my last time at the movies for well over a year). It was certainly the best DC movie in a very long time. I didn't think it was the best film of the year or anything though. However a cast of Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Jurnee Smollett, Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Chris Messina does deserve the world so I can't be mad about them winning.

For the first round we can each advance 5-10 film. One film will go straight to round four, and the next will go to the next round. You cannot advance less than 5, nor can you advance more than 10. You don't have to advance all your films at one time, but when you're done please let me know so I know to move on. You have 24 hours. Good luck!

Anyone else is still welcome to join and advance any films! But once the first round is over, it is too late.
