Ooh nice! 😄

I'm debating between waiting for the full episode or watching the dances on YouTube first. Decisions, decisions. :haha:

I just finished watching all the dances on YouTube (waiting to see if I can find the full episode) and here’s my thoughts:

Tom & Amy (Cha-Cha): Good choice to open the show.  Tom obviously has good musicality being a musician and Amy seems to be one of the best teachers because you could tell he was really focused on executing the technique correctly.  The technique itself wasn’t perfect, his Cha-Cha walks were a bit flat-footed but he has great potential and already strong connection with Amy.  Score: 5

Tilly & Nikita (Waltz): I was probably most anxious about this couple with this dance due to Nikita’s previous poor attempt at Standard but his choreography here was a pleasant surprise.  Looked very much like a Waltz with much done in hold, graceful and soft arms and very proper, upright posture from the couple.  Tilly seems pretty nervous though and technique wasn’t best, her elbow was droopy in hold, she did miss heel-leads and didn’t get her feet under her during the spin; however, she did have some lovely arms out of hold and good chemistry with Nikita.  Score: 4 (not as technically good as Tom)

Ugo & Oti (Samba): Another pleasant surprise, Ugo dancing Samba in Week 1 isn’t a train-wreck!  Solid rhythm and hip-action during the travels across the floor and he can shake it.  Some of his movements were a bit blocky though and his upper and lower halves weren’t always cohesive with each other.  Samba is a tough first dance unless you’re Kelvin or Maisie but Ugo handled it well enough like Graeme.  Major props to him for dancing after losing his father a couple of weeks ago and having his funeral earlier today as well.  Score: 5

Rhys & Nancy (Viennese Waltz): What a dapper debut from Energizer Bunny Rhys.  He turned into a romantic leading gentleman who took care of his leading lady Nancy who looked lovely in her own debut.  Good frame when in hold and even after a bit long of a time out of it he got right back into hold with no obvious adjustments.  I would’ve liked a bit more in hold and not so many bars in a row dancing out of hold but still quite a pretty ballroom dance from Latin-focused Nancy and energetic Rhys.  They are going to be a strong team this series.  Score: 7

Sara & Aljaž (Cha-Cha): Another surprise but a disappointing one I’m afraid.  I was expecting her to come out full guns-blazing with the personality she’s shown on IG and the Launch but she was unusually subdued in her performance, especially next to Aljaž who was going full throttle with his expressive performance.  Her technique was lackluster too, seemingly in being careful to not mess up any steps, her legs were bent the whole time which is a Cha-Cha No-No.  I feel like unless she gets an upbeat dance next week like a personality-filled Charleston or peppy Quickstep (Aljaž seems to be a stronger Standard choreographer despite being a Ten Dance specialist) she might be Aljaž’s earliest exit since 2014.  Score: 3

Dan & Nadiya (Quickstep): Fun surprise!  Dan didn’t muck it up!  Quickstep has to be so hard for a beginner especially if the beginner is doing it on live TV for their first dance.  Dan coped very well, probably thanks to Queen of Ballroom Nadiya; I don’t know how she got him properly in hold because in the Launch his height made her look like Janette!  Anyway, decent effort from Dan in terms of frame and footwork, sometimes the footwork got a little wild and all over the place but still not too bad a dance.  Obsessed with Nadiya’s red jumpsuit.  Score: 5

Rose & Giovanni (Jive): Rose is absolutely adorable and she can perform to the balcony.  Very neat and tight footwork, a bit flat-footed on the kicks and flicks though.  Giovanni was smart in not making the choreography too difficult and complex for her especially for a Week 1 Jive.  They’re still a couple to watch, I think Rose is going to be a force next week with the Tango and this Jive was a nice appetizer before the main course that will be the Tango.  Score: 5 (6s were a little high judging on the amount of steps she executed but 4 was way too low, never change Shirley 🙄)

Katie & Gorka (Tango): She’s my pick to be forgotten by the viewers when it comes time to vote but I hope doesn’t happen because she showed so much potential!  Great staccato movement and seemed to react and respond to Gorka during the performance, I was also worried about their connection because I didn’t really see anything last week but looks like they’re starting to gel as partners now.  There were moments of fierceness from Katie and then her nerves would take over and she’d look a bit scared, her frame also collapsed quite a few times; she ended fiercely but she needs to keep it consistent because she has the potential to become a contender.  Score: 6

Robert & Dianne (Cha-Cha): OMG those costumes!  Okay he’s actually kind of good?  He has the rhythm down and really attacked the step, probably the most energetic and forceful dance so far.  There were obviously some dodgy foot and hand placements as well as his open mouth and over-the-top facial expressions throughout, he also got a bit out of control with the spins near the end and nearly fell out of them, but a great start to a likely long run on this series.  Very fun and difficult choreography from Dianne as well and props to her for making him really dance a Cha-Cha rather than relying on the comedy, she’s on her way to break that Week 4 curse.  Score: 5

Greg & Karen (American Smooth): He’s a great performer as expected and seems to have a great rapport with Karen as well.  The actual dancing was a bit meh, his footwork was all over the place and he hunched forward in hold.  I think he’ll last long though thanks to his charming personality and familiarity and who knows?  Maybe he’ll pull a Bill Bailey and improve massively next week?  Score: 4 (massively overscored by the judges, wtf?)

Nina & Neil (Samba): Finally Strictly uses Mi Gente!  Wow Nina can move, her confidence is enviable!  She got the bounce going for most of the dance which is an accomplishment in itself for a Week 1 Samba.  Footwork sometimes went a bit awry but she captured the feel of the dance and didn’t hold back.  Her dress had a bit too much fabric and made it hard to see some of her upper movement but she didn’t look very tense anyway.  Fierce debut and good choreography from Neil, already better than anything he gave Alex.  Score: 6

John & Johannes (Tango): Hot, powerful, masculine, both of them.  These two are Strictly’s answer to Germany’s Nicolas & Vadim, both countries are spoiling me with them!  Great staccato with a few slow parts to balance it out and keep it from looking hectic.  I love how they’re taking turns leading and following like N&V, big risk having John start leading but it paid off.  Only critique I have is that John’s shoulders looked tense and a bit high at times but it might just be first dance nerves.  Overall a strong debut from the first all-male partnership.  Score: 7

Judi & Graziano (American Smooth): Judi’s presence on the floor is everything, she owned the dance, Graziano and everyone in the studio.  She also managed the elegance and hold of the dance very well, liked how Graziano kept the content very standard and classic to show off her potential and personality.  He’s really come a long way from his first series and he seems like such a sweetheart so I’m glad to see him with such a fun partner who’s a big fan of him; they give me Sherri & Val vibes (an underrated pairing of Val’s imo).  Now just a bit more focus on the dance content in the future rather than theatre and they can survive a few weeks (I was seeing some pre-season comparisons of undeserved-first-boot Chizzy and now that Judi has actually danced people are more interested so fingers crossed!).  Score: 6

AJ & Kai (Jive): What. In. The. H*ll. Was. That.  Week 1?!  Looks more like Week 8!!!  People, we have our Forum It Girl for this series!!!  Amazing AJ absolutely annihilated my expectations and delivered one of the best first dances ever seen on Strictly or DWTS IMO!!!  Her kicks and flicks were on point and she was in time with Kai plus her personality shone in this dance.  Fans are already propping her Jive up to Alexandra Freakin’ Burke’s Jive!!!  I’m so happy for her, this should shut up those who have been complaining about her not being famous enough and being too loud and over-the-top, a Star was born today on Strictly.  So happy for Kai as well, he was my favorite male pro on DWTS Ireland and now he’s slaying on Strictly.  Fans are comparing him to Kevin Clifton which is funny because it was strongly rumored that he was going to be Kevin’s replacement last year before they minimized the amount of couples competing and pros performing on last series.  A talented female/forum It Girl + my favorite DWTS Ireland male pro = my #1 couple!!!  Score: 8

Adam & Katya (Cha-Cha): He is so hot.  Okay, got that out of the way, onto the dance!  A great ending to a great first week, he kept his legs pretty straight and hit and finished his lines strongly, very in sync with Katya as well.  Got a bit unbalanced near the end, probably too much adrenaline running through both of them, and just barely managed to get into the final pose on time.  Overall though, great debut and promising partnership between Adam & Katya, who was coming off a bit extra fierce in this dance even more than usual, likely due to her having a potential second Glitterball in her future!  Score: 7

Tom & Amy : What a way to start off the series! It was a super fun performance - it showed his potential especially in term of rhytym and musicality. I definitely think he needs more confident as he was def. second guessing, here and there. Overall, a great first performance and I am sure we will see more of him in the coming weeks.

Tilly & Nikita : While not technically perfect, I thought this Waltz really captured the essence of the Waltz - it was very beautiful.  I enjoy their chemistry so I am looking forward to seeing more, and how she can improve her techniques in the coming weeks.

Ugo & Oti : First of all, Oti is still one of my favourite pro - I can't help but look at her, much to Ugo disadvantage as I don't really pay attention to his dancing. Overall, this Samba was a great effort on Ugo part especially this early on - I thought he embodied some aspect of it but it was nothing that really WOW'd me.

Rhys & Nancy : This was the first routine of the night that I was impressed with. I really think Rhy have tons of potential if he commits to his other routines like he did with this - being focus will pay off.  And can we talk about the technical elements, and his foot work? Very impressive.

Sara & Aljaz : This performance was sadly not IT, which pain me to say as I really enjoy Aljaz as a professional.  She was unable to really match Aljaz's technique, and she was definitely a bit all over the place - she was definitely loss and looked confused on the dancefloor.  And like Ariel said, she was lacking the personality - she turned it down way too much.

Dan & Nadiya : Now, this was the surprise of the night - I expected him to be a mediocre but he really held his own. Very impressed by his frame and footwork. I am intrigued to see if he's a one trick pony or not.

Rose & Giovanni :  First of all, Rose is super likeable & I really her partnership with Giovanni - I think this connection will help in future week. The Jive was one that I would expect in Week 1 - nothing terrible about it but just not that impressive.

Katie & Gorka : An impressive Tango for Week 1 - I want to praise her for really giving her all.  She's a bit nervous which is nervous, but I think she could surprise in the next few week.  Overall, I am not sure if it will be memorable at the end of the episode so we shall see.

Robert & Dianna :  Okay, he WAS NOT bad. I am shook. Anyway, the routine feel that it could have been for movie week with Blaze of Glory of the Eurovision movie .  I thought he did a good job at keeping up with Dianne especially in term of the speed and the footwork required for this routine.

Greg & Karen : American Smooth bore me to death, if I am being honest as I don't find anything memorable about them. This routine did nothing to keep my attention. And his posture was just there, and overall he was meh. My least favourite, so far.

Nina & Neil : The energy, the confidence... This is how you kick off your SCD journey!  She could be the one that surprise us all in the long run - she seems to be very committed which will end up paying off in the long run. Also, great choreography!

John & Johannes : Two great Tangos during the premiere? I love it. And this one? Amazing. I am deceased, tbh. It gave me so much life and everything I didn't know I needed in life.  May not have been technically perfect, but one of the best of the night. They have great chemistry and I am so excited going on this journey with them.

Judi & Graziano  She has PERSONALITY for days, week, months and years...  She owned the dance floor.  And this is how you do an American Smooth to keep my attention from beginning to end.  In the future, I want to see more precision in their techniques and choreography though but still a great first week performance.

AJ & Kai :  She did not need to SLAY me like that. She really murdered the dancefloor. She nailed every aspect of the dance. How is this only Week 1? I just hope that we are not propping her up too much - I am nervous when they start on a high because if they crash, they crash hard.  I obviously love her, love this routine but I just hope she doesn't become oversaturated like other IT girl in the past. :ph34rwave:

Adam & Katya ADAM! My pre-season favourite, and one of my favourite Olympian of the past summer olympics.  I love Adam and so happy that he's on the show . Now onto this routine, ugh... I am in love with him, even more :haha:. Those hip moving the way they did, his footwork... Incredibly partnership and love how they were in sync. Honestly, glad they kept the two best performance of the night for the end!

Ranking:

  1. AJ & Kai
  2. Adam & Katya
  3. John & Johannes
  4. Nina & Neil
  5. Rhys & Nancy
  6. Judi & Graziano
  7. Rose & Giovanni

Week 1 Thoughts:

The opening routine was so beautiful and joyous. It made me smile all the way through. Gorka & Karen really shone in that as the leading stars.❤️

Tom & Amy - Cha Cha: It's quite intense for Tom to balance out touring and doing Strictly. This was a decent season opener. I thought it was a cure and fun routine. It was cool Tom added in some fun guitar playing moves, which really got him into the feeling of the dance. He did have some stiffness here and there, but he also had some nice technique with his footwork. He has rhythm too. He did have a messy spin in there in the middle. But fun! I'd say a mix of 5's and 6's would have worked here. My score: 22

Tilly & Nikita - Waltz: Aww I think Tilly & Nikita make an adorable partnership. This was a very pretty and sweet Waltz. I did feel Tilly was a little nervous at the beginning, but she let those nerves once she got into hold. Some parts of her frame looked a little awkward. And i think she could have glided a little more in the footwork. But I was impressed with how she performed and got into the performance. A Very nice dance. Random note but something about her reminds me of Lauren Alaina. My score: 21

Ugo & Oti - Samba: Ooof the Samba is a tough order for Ugo. Omg i don't even know why, but i just love Ugo & Oti ad a partnership, they are so funny & playful with each other. Love this intro of Oti describing the Samba. Ooh I do really like this routine and how it was an African styled Samba. But awww Ugh, he really tried here. I did think he struggled a lot with the footwork as that was quite suspect. The voltas and bounce and all of the Samba partnering was a struggle. But he was much more in his element on the African styled side by side parts. He was having a blast. Lol Motsi' s comments on how he looked nervous at missing a step and having a ball the next moment, as I was thinking that too. :haha: Ooh goodness, he lost his father a few weeks ago and dedicated his dance to him. :broken: More or less agree on the score. My score: 18/19.

Rhys & Nancy - Viennese Waltz: Omg Rhys saying Nancy has more energy than him id truly something. :dead: Oh, I love this classic B2M song for Rhys' VW. This wasa really pretty and romantic routine. It was nice seeing this softer side of Rhys here. He got into character well, and danced this with grave & elegance. I did feel some parts he was kinda thinking it through and not completely at ease. But he provided a very good frame and footwork throughout. Nancy worked hard to make sure he got that frame right. Omg his spazziness after he finished dance. I really look forward to his Latin as I can see him really slaying those styles. My score: 27

Sara & Aljaz - Cha-Cha: lol this Dragon's Den intro with Sara & Aljaz. :lmao: So I take it that shoe is like the UK version of Shark Tank? Ok, this was a cute and fun dance. Hmmm Sara was interesting in this. She performed it well with her face and was selling it and having fun. But sadly her dancing was quite stiff and timid. The technique and hip action wasn't too great. It was like the face and body movements weren't really matching. Oh and Aljaz dancing quite fast and rhythmic didn't really help Sara either. 🙈 i definitely think ballroom will suit her better. It wasnt terrible though. My score: 16/17.

Dan & Nadiya - Quickstep: Omg Dan telling Naidya to say something nice and then Nadiya's "I think he's an amazing dancer.... just kidding." :dead: i came in with very low expectations on Dan, so he really surprised me in a good way with this dance. This was a really fun & cute dance that suited him well. He had s good frame and footwork throughout most of the dance. There's was a part in the middle where he did seem to lose his composure and footwork a bit (and then he was looking down too). He performed this really well and had great fun with this. I am terrified for his Latin. I agree with the 24, though the 7s were a bit high but it balances out the 5's. My score: 23/24.

Rose & Giovanni - Jive: It's so interesting seeing  how Rose learns to dance. The part of Rose teaching Gio sign language was really sweet! This was a really cute and fun Jive from Rose & Giovanni. Rose got to showcase her fun, playful and even a bit of sassy side her. She dud well with the partnering and had good footwork. Sure some footwork and kicks & flicks could have been a little sharper & crisper, but they were still solid. She looked adorable here and was having so much fun here. I saw a lot of online rage for Shirley with that 4, which I agree was ridiculous. Ooh i didn't like that version of the song. Omg lol Rose was hilarious with her backstage interview with Claudia, with the again bit. :haha: My score: 24.

Katie & Gorka - Tango: Ooh a Tango is a good first dance for an actress like Katie. I thought this a pretty good Tango. I did think the drama was a little low at the start bur then she build it up as the dance progressed, and i was feeling the passion there. She danced this well with a good frame, footwork and attack. She did seem a little tense in her frame. But she had sharp bead snaps in there too. My score: 24

Robert & Dianne - Cha-Cha: Oooh these outfits sure are interesting. :dead: This is cool how this dance is based on the actual ballroom dance competitions. Wow... And this dance sure was something. :dead: It was so camp and so extra. Robert performed well and brought great fun here. He was committed to the dance. his dancing and technique dud leave a lot to be desired. He was lacking there in the technical footwork and didn't really have the hip action. And yikes, he almost fell out of those spins. A good crowd pleaser, at least. The 6's were a bit much, lol. My score: 18.

Greg & Karen - American Smooth: I think Greg getting the classic Hollywood styled ballroom is the perfect choice for his first dance. And wow, Greg did really well and channeled the character of the dance. He performed it as a natural. Sadly, I did him him really awkward while he was in hold. His frame and positioning all felt really odd. His footwork wasn't that great, especially those hopping section in hold was a little weird. But all in all, a good first dance. My score: 23/24.

Nina & Neil - Samba: I'm already stanning with Nina wanting to channel her inner Beyonce. :giggle:Okay Nina... I see you. She did really well with the difficult task of a Week 1 Samba. She def had some fiery and fierce energy going.  I thought she had good hip action. Some decent & solid footwork although I felt some parts were a little stompy  and heavy footed. Some of the transitions were a little messy. Loved her attitude and energy.  The 5s were too low. I would go with a mix of 6's and 7's. My score: 26

John & Johannes - Tango: Oh it's interesting how John doesn't want to know if he's leasing or following in the dance, as he's just rather focus on learning the steps. This is something so interesting and cool in same sex partnerships as either the contestant or pro could lead the dance, or follow. But wow, this was a great Tango. The dance was so sharp, strong and full of intensity & attack. It was quite passionate in a strong way too. I loved the dark and moody feel of this dance. John danced really well, and it looked like John & Johannes were flipping the leading and following aspects. That was such an interesting dynamic. John's partnering an footwork was great. He nailed the character too. My score: 30.

Judi & Giovanni - American Smooth: I never thought  I would see an American Smooth to "Chain of Fools," but here we are. :haha: But this was  really fun and sassy routine that was perfect for Judi. She brought the sass and performed the heck out of this. She dud struggle a bit on the in hold parts, namely her frame and footwork, but everything else overshadowed that. She was just having a blast, the time of her life and it was all so fun to watch. :bobo: OMG her comments about having no neck and this was all she got had me cracking up. :dead: My score: 23/24.

AJ & Kai - Jive: lol AJ is so fun and full of personality. AJ is someone who I felt could be either really good or really bad, and I just had no idea with her. But wow, this dance showed she is really good! It was brave of her to do that opening solo. But whoa, she continued on and really brought that fire, energy and performance through the dance! Her kicks &flicks we're so sharp and full of attack. The Thing so crazy about this was how fast the dance was and AJ was always on it and never missed a beat. She was fantastic on both the partnering and side by side parts! :omg: I loved her gold dress, and she looked like a golden Goddess.❤️She blew me away here. I'm shook at the 9's, but well deserved! I love how shocked she was at the 8s, and then even More so st the 9's.

Adam & Katya - Cha-Cha: Definitely not surprised the Olympic winning Adam got to close the show. Adam was someone i was unsure of if he would be good or not. But he also proved yo be quite good here. He has these really long leg extensions here. It was kinds crazy but cool. He did do really well with the partnering and had a good sense of rhythm here. He had decent hip action in there. The leg spin around pot stirrer move at the end was both really cool and weird at the same time (though Katya slipped up at the end - but props to Adam keeping it going). He did seem to stick his butt out on some of the partnering parts too. But really good energy & technique all around. My score: 29/30.

Rankings:

1. AJ & Kai - Jive

2. John & Johannes - Tango
3. Adam & Katya - Cha-Cha

I thought this was a very strong premiere episode. There is no terrible obvious first boot here, like there were in the past years. This is gonna be an intense competition this year, for sure.

Tom and Amy have both tested positive for COVID. :( Luckily the rules are different this year so they should be back for Week 3, but unfortunately will be isolating and miss the show this coming Saturday. Hope they are feeling ok/better soon!

Aww, this is so sad. :(

Thankfully the rules are different and they are allowed a bye week and are not forced to withdraw. That would have been terrible. Really hoping and wishing all the best for them to get better!

Thoughts:

- Lots of great song/style combos. I'd say my biggest song/style combos are: AJ, Judi, Katie, Nina, Tilly & Adam.

- I was waiting and wondering who would dance to "good 4 u." I could also see this song for a Tango. Shocked this hasn't been used on DWTS, but curious to see how Katie does with this.

- Think Tilly really needs that Charleston to help her standout and showcase a fun side. But I'm a bit worried as she's a non performer.

- Kinda bummed Rose doesn't have a ballroom dance this week. Curious to see how she handles the Salsa.

- Greg's dances rundown is kinda strange. He's done an AS and a Couples Choice, but not one of the proper Ballroom/Latin 10 dances yet. But I wonder what style this will fall into. I guess Theater Jazz? I think it could have worked for a Salsa.

- :dead: at the irony of 6'6" Dan dancing to a song called "Giant."

I don’t have time for a proper review of week 1, so I’ll just post a few thoughts:

-AJ’s Jive was amazing. :omg:

- I also really like Rose’s Jive, but a lot of it might because she danced to a T.Swift song. :giggle: The 4 was way too low, but I wouldn’t expect otherwise from Shirley. 🙂

-On the other hand, Greg was very overscored. That 7 was extremely generous.

-Really liked Rhys, John, Judi & Katie as well.
