Contestants who had a "breakout moment" in the KOs, but didn't go far

I don’t see how Abby was bussed? Uptempo =/= Bus

And I say this as someone who liked/loved Abby’s pre lives performances.

yeah lol you're probably right, poor wording on my part. in my head i just equated bus and suboptimal song choice lmao, even though they definitely aren't equivalent, especially since in the case of uptempo songs, nearly every contestant who goes relatively far gets one. thanks for pointing that out!

Agreed. Plus, they probably made some sound edits.

i remember hearing that one source thought that claire was as good as or better than abby, but it's probably not reliable info to go off of since from my understanding it was just one person. it's even more likely that they edited abby's performance to make it sound better.

Didn't Abby say she planned to do an acoustic version of that song but they didn't let her?

Abby Cates for sure, S15 people had her pegged(even I did) as the 2nd PV after Chevel for Kelly's team. Maybe even a potential finalist if she didn't get bussed as hard as she did. "Because Of You" was phenomenal.

Kelly's top 3 that season should have been Chevel, Abby, and Keith

Michael Lee, Jean Kelly, Kelsea Johnson (Honestly feel like her opponent, Sharane Calister's performance matched her performance so it diluted the "moment feel") , Abby Cates, Zaxai, MAYBE Ricky Manning, MAYBE Max Boyle, honestly didn't care for it but Regina Love's Midnight Train to Georgia also was well-received before she completely botched "Hello." These are like the only ones I can think of...where the social media reaction exceeded their presence or how the audience perceived them at that point in the competition. I tried to keep it to contestants who didn't make it past the playoffs.

The problem is I wouldn't call any of them true moments in the context of the show. Like none of them hold up against actual knockout moments that propelled contestant's to the finale (Chloe, Rose Short, Hannah Hudson).

EDIT: Forgot about Patrique Fortson I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing. Add him to that list.

Bryana Salaz and Hanna Eyre

Bleeding Love? I loved Hanna, but KOs was the point where I knew she was fodder. That song exposed all her weaknesses, especially her limited range. She never really lived up to her potential. I think Adam probably wanted similar trajectories for her and Reagan. Too bad he flopped with both lol.

When I think of “breakout” moment, it means a significant increase in audience support, following a performance. Sometimes a performance can be good, yet still not move the needle. Based on that, I think it’s a really short list in reality.

Chloe is an example of that. I don´t think anybody remembered her, and on top of that her battle was montaged, yet after her KO, the support started to come in. That was a key point in her winning.

Yeah, there are a lot of examples of a breakout KO performance vaulting a contestant to frontrunner status, but that’s not what this thread is about. It’s about fodder having a good performance, but at the end of the day, they were still fodder. I have a hard time calling that a “breakout moment.”

yeah, i put breakout moment in quotes in the title, because at the end of the day, if they didn't move on far, then it wasn't really a breakout moment

That’s exactly what I’m saying. So, who are the ones who actually had a breakout moment, only to be eliminated in the PO due to a bad performance? It’s impossible to know for sure, but Abby Cates might legitimately be one of those. Other than that, I don’t know.

In terms of performance quality, I´d say Ricky Manning (S7) definitely had a moment in the KOs. His improvement was massive.

As for his support, everybody was in agreement that he beat Elijuh, but apparently that wasn´t enough to get him through, and his PO performance didn´t help.

I personally didn't think that she could be the winner, but i loved both of that performances. In fact, unlike most people here, i enjoyed all of her performances (these two were hands down her best, though)

I just wanted to share my personal opinión. I wasn't an active member here until like Season 19, so idk if people here really thought that she could win (and i don't care btw, she was my biggest snowflake that season, regardless of people liking her or not)

same! i all of her performances.

i'll agree and say that she didn't seem like the frontrunner after battles; there really was no apparent frontrunner on team kelly after battles imo.
