🚨🚨RANKINGS ROUND 5 - BETTER LATE THAN NEVER I GUESS?🚨🚨

24. Ben Allen (Team Blake --> Team Gwen)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-Ben-Alle

Explanation Ben is the first stolen contestant to be ranked here. Overall, up until his last week on the show his overall song selection was actually my favorite of the four country males this season. My biggest nitpick with Ben is that he's too twangy tonally for my personal taste. Is it petty? A little bit Maybe. Do I stand by it? Yes. Ben's certainly a talented musician, and I would've liked to see his battle play out since it's a country song I actually like; in fact, most of his song selections hit me right in the nostalgia bone one way or another. For his KO, despite preferring WTW over him I was sure (before reading the full spoilers) Ben would move on; I was half-right, as he didn't move on with Blake but getting stolen still counts. His playoffs performance was one of my favorites, and though he was not who I would've picked as my coach save I get why Gwen did it. His semifinals performance was fine, but not up to his standard, and his Instant Save performance had what may have been pitch issues; in any case, he didn't advance to the finale. Since the show, Ben has announced a hometown concert with his band, but there's no word of new music yet.

Hint:  This contestant sang a coach's song at some point in the competition. ( Ben sang a Blake Shelton song in the semifinals and was eliminated that week.)

Montage/Leak: His battle was montaged and he was not leaked at any point.

Genre: Country

Favorite Performance: There Goes My Life (playoffs)

23. John Holiday (Team Legend)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-John-Hol

Explanation  Let me preface this ranking by saying that on a technical level, John Holiday runs laps around 90+% of the contestants from this season - he is insanely skilled as a vocalist and is unique as a countertenor with classical training + an opera background. However, John lands here because I wasn't a huge fan of his falsetto - I found it kind of grating to listen to. It also doesn't help his case that he was steered from the jazzier lane he was better at into a more standard pop lane that didn't suit him. The performances of his I preferred stuck closer to a more jazz/R&B fusion, and if he steps away from opera or a more classical musical style that is the lane I hope to see him do the majority of his work in. John had several notable performances throughout the season - his blind audition turned Kelly's reaction into a GIF, his knockout had the vocal bam-bam he's capable of, and his duet with his coach in the finale was pretty good. Though John is the first finalist to be ranked, he is certainly not a bad vocalist. I wasn't expecting him to end up in fifth place based on his pre-finale work, but a bad night not only tanked his chances of escaping fifth place but also lowered his standing in this ranking. Since the finale, John's gotten to sing at his younger sister's wedding and released a cover of Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" which you can check out here.

Hint:   This contestant closed the most episodes of any contestant this season. ( John closed his blind audition and battle episodes as well as the playoffs; he also closed out the non-voted knockouts for the season.)

Montage/Leak: He was not montaged at any point and his knockout was leaked.

Genre: R&B/Jazz

Favorite Performance: Misty (blind audition)

22. Joseph Soul (Team Kelly --> Team Gwen)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-Joseph-S

Explanation  In what may be the hottest take of this part of the list, Joseph Soul directly follows John Holiday. Joseph's biggest reason for landing in this group was because I enjoyed how floaty and delicate his falsetto could be, but pitch problems prevent me from moving him higher than this. I also think that Joseph's mixture of artists was more interesting than most this season - he went from Bob Marley to Patti Labelle to Billie Eilish to the Bee-Gees. I liked his blind but found it kind of sleepy despite being pretty-sounding vocally. His battle with Desz wasn't bad on his end; he just had some nerves that lead to pitch issues, and I think Gwen was onto something when she said confidence was the big thing he needed to improve as an artist. After finding out via spoilers how his KO matchup went, I suspected that he and his partner were the most likely to be the KO montage; getting proven right made me suspect that despite making the playoffs, he wouldn't be moving on. Once again, I was right. Since the show, Joseph has not released word of mew music plans yet.

Hint:   This contestant's last name matched their genre. ( Joseph is a soul artist and his last name onstage is Soul.)

Montage/Leak: His knockout was montaged and his battle was leaked.

Genre: Reggae/Soul/Pop

Favorite Performance: Is This Love (blind audition)

21. Casmé (Team Legend)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-Casme.jp

Explanation  Casmé wraps up this part of the list. Despite being a one-chair turn on Team Legend, she was impressive enough to take down a three-chair turn in her battle. I liked her audition; though not my favorite of the night, it was a solid one overall and her battle with Rio was also very good. It wasn't until she tried to switch genres in the knockouts that she stumbled. She had a number of issues with the song she picked and ultimately was not stolen after losing her knockout to Tamara Jade. After her time on the show, Casmé got to sing the national anthem for the New Orleans Saints - I couldn't find anything else on social media about new music yet, but we'll see. (EDIT: @disney1024 reminded me that Casmé took part in Peyton Lamar's Christmas song mashup - I linked that back in Peyton's ranking if you want to go check it out.)

Hint:   This contestant's individual song choices were both previously done as four-chair-turn blind auditions. ( Casmé sang Baby I Love You (Katie Kadan's blind audition song) and Wrecking Ball (the late Christina Grimmie's blind audition song) during her time on the show.)

Montage/Leak: She was not montaged or leaked at any point.

Genre: R&B

Favorite Performance: You're All I Need To Get By (battle round)

(Notes from the author: Apologies for taking literal ages to get this up! I've been eyeballs-deep in job applications over the last week and actually had two separate interviews, so things have been kind of hectic on top of trying to figure out the status of all my grad school apps. I do have the next set of clues ready to go so I'll post those within the next 15 minutes; in the meantime, enjoy the arguably-most-controversial section of the rankings so far.)

  • This contestant may have picked a different coach if they could turn back time.
  • This contestant found that making the live shows wasn't in their blood.
  • This contestant was paired with or against one of the top 3 artists this season.

And we´re back at it again!
24. Seems fair, I agree that his last week was probably his worst, but overall he was solid, even if he didn´t do anything for me either in the pre taped rounds. His playoffs performance though remains one of my favorites of the season. But overall fair placement.

23. I personally disagree with him being so low, but I get why his tone would not be for everybody. You´re right when you say that he pretty much runs laps around almost everyone this season on a pure technical note though.

22. I´d personally have him a bit lower. Perhaps 25 might be good. He was solid when I didn´t expect him to be (I got carried away due to the sources not liking him at all), but he exceeded my expectations. He was a bit forgettable though.

21. I´d have her lower. Didn´t get to meet her enough, and her KO was just not it. I do think she won her battle, and overall it was a solid performance.

  • This contestant was paired with or against one of the top 3 artists this season.

1- Ryan Berg (Blake did the "waiting" part on his audition song, since there were no backing vocalists)

2- Marisa Corvo

3- James Pyle

4- Larriah Jackson, since John Sullivan and Aaron Scott have already been ranked.

- Umm.... is it Jim??? I remember him and Blake singing something about Bakersfield after his audition

- Marisa Corvo (KO song)

- James Pyle (KO song)

- This could be either Larriah or Chloe, and I'm gonna guess Larriah Jackson.

nvm i didn't realize Ryan B wasn't ranked yet. he makes more sense for the first clue

I might've forgotten everything about S19 to decode the clues...

If it helps, I'll post a list of the names  that HAVEN'T been identified and try to make the rest of the clues based off things that can be found via Wikipedia or rewatching performances on YouTube.

🚨🚨RANKINGS ROUND 6 - RETURN OF THE RANKING 🚨🚨

20. James Pyle (Team Legend --> Team Blake)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-James-Py

Explanation  We kick off the return of the rank with the final artist to join the season 19 cast. James' audition may have been the last one to air and he may have been relatively new to the stage (he admitted to having performed just a few times before trying out for the show) but he showed off a strong stage presence and ended up being a high note to close out the blind auditions. He even earned an 81% turn rate from the audience, which is ridiculously high for someone that shows up late in the game. His battle paired him against a four-chair turn; though I wish the battle had given both him and Cami more individual chances to shine, their harmonies were gorgeous and his steal was definitely not undeserved. However, his knockout was shaky enough for him to be short-clipped and he didn't make the live shows. Since the show, James has dropped a single that you can stream on Spotify here.

Hint:  This contestant found that making the live shows wasn't in their blood. (James sang In My Blood in the knockouts and lost to Ian Flanigan.)

Montage/Leak: His knockout was short-clipped and his battle was leaked.

Genre: Pop

Favorite Performance: Watermelon Sugar (blind audition)

19. Ryan Berg (Team Gwen)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-Ryan-Ber

Explanation  While we're waiting on the world to change and quarantine to end, we got to hear Ryan's rendition of the John Mayer hit in his blind - with backing vocals temporarily provided by Blake Shelton, as the country coach was singing along during the audition. Alas, the cowboy didn't turn and with John blocked, he defaulted to Team Gwen. In his battle, I preferred Liam over him since I found Liam more interesting, but I can see the appeal of Ryan's voice and why Gwen picked him; I am of the camp that had Ryan vs. Liam been in the first battle taping instead of the last battle filmed, both men could've advanced. Also, confession time: I wouldn't have minded Ryan being a knockout steal. That said, considering how the steals ended up working out, there's nobody I'd have wanted him to replace of the three stolen artists whose spot could have gone to him. After his time on the show, Ryan has posted at least one original song to YouTube - I linked the Instagram version of it here as that's what his Twitter redirected me to.

Hint:   This contestant got a coach to sing along with them at one point. (Blake was singing along to part of Ryan's audition song.)

Montage/Leak: He was not montaged and his knockout was leaked (thanks to @thevoiceisthetop for the correction).

Genre: Soul/Rock

Favorite Performance: Makin' Me Look Good Again (knockout)

18. Marisa Corvo (Team Kelly)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-Marisa-C

Explanation  Ah, Marisa, the resident pot-stirrer of Season 19. I am a massive sucker for Pink's discography, so Marisa's audition ended up being one of my favorites of the season because of that. Marisa's powerful voice once again shined in her battle with a heck of a song to cover because not only is Celine Dion a beast of a vocalist, it was also a song that Kelly covered during her run on American Idol. Luckily for Marisa, the other coaches unanimously picked her as the winner of the battle, and Kelly took her to the knockouts. In the knockouts, Marisa went up against Tanner in Kelly's most WTF pairup of the season; she sang Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" and was shaky at the beginning vocally but ended it well, but it wasn't enough to move her on. No big deal, right, because that happens...unless you're Marisa and you take Kelly's promise of getting to the finale seriously. Cue Twitter meltdown after her knockout aired. It's been covered extensively elsewhere on IDF but the TL;DR is that she threw a lot of shade at Kelly and Tanner despite Tanner being nothing but complimentary towards her when people complained that she lost because they thought Marisa outsold him. Since her Twitter rampage, Marisa has gotten Instagram-verified, done some apartment hunting in New York, and performed with a drag variety show the other day. Best of luck to Marisa with wherever her musical career takes her.

Hint:  This contestant may have picked a different coach if they could turn back time. (This is a nod not only to Marisa's knockout song but also to her bashing of Kelly's decision after the episode aired.)

Montage/Leak: She was not montaged or leaked at any point.

Genre: Pop

Favorite Performance: I Surrender (battle round)

17. Larriah Jackson (Team Gwen)

TheVoice-S19-Artist-Bio-450x450-Larriah-

Explanation Larriah is last up on this set and is one of the youngest solo vocalists to appear so far, having been just 15 when she auditioned for the show. Despite being short-clipped in her audition, the bit that we did get to hear demonstrated plenty of potential and a pretty tone; one chair is all it takes, and Gwen loves working with young artists so this was a good match. In her battle with fellow teen Carter, Larriah showed off a vocal so controlled and polished that I was surprised she had, given we'd barely seen and heard her up to this point. Though it turned out that Gwen ultimately made the right call by advancing Carter, saving Larriah was a solid choice even if I thought based just off the battle that she had the upper hand. In the 4-way Knockout, Larriah's vocals struggled a bit, though I think at least a bit of that may have been song choice - Adele is tricky even for most people twice Larriah's age. Though Larriah ultimately didn't advance, she did get to appear in both of the Top 20 performances, so I guess that balances things out somewhat. After her exit from the show, Larriah has posted some covers to her Instagram; check out her cover of "Stand Up" from The Color Purple here.

Hint:  This contestant was paired with or against one of the top 3 artists this season. (Larriah sang against Carter in her battle round; Carter went on to win the season.)

Montage/Leak: Her audition was short-clipped and she was not leaked at any point.

Genre: R&B/Pop

Favorite Performance: Like I'm Gonna Lose You (battle round)
