American Idol General Discussion

I didn’t say anything at the time, but his mom did a lot of “fundraising” when he was on the show too.

None of the above is my problem, so I’m not going to comment on it.

A lot of people had tough upbringings.  Some are smarter about doing better and breaking the cycle.  And then there are those like Triston - who repeat it.

Sad but true.  Abi also had a tough upbringing with the hints of abuse and the divorce of her parents but I think that she’ll be better at breaking the cycle, perhaps because she’s older and more mature.  Triston is so young, and he’s more likely to repeat the cycle as a result of his youth and immaturity.

sometimes even an opportunity like appearing on Idol can't make up for generational issues that prevent "breaking the cycle." Triston is Black (a marginalized community) and was raised by a poor single mother in the South. he lived in an abusive environment at one point and has also experienced homelessness. Idol completely exploited this and deluded him into thinking he would have this huge career post-show - pretty much for the sake of trying to create a heartwarming narrative for the viewers. now that he's realized that won't actually happen (because as we all saw, he is not mature or experienced enough to make it in the industry yet), the cycle continues. which is really sad and makes me feel icky about the show. though this is also far from the first instance of this... 😕 same thing could be said for Noah Thompson - a teen Dad from the South who was told he would become a superstar and we've barely heard from him since.

Triston's Facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/tristonharpermusic/

His most recent post, he's holding a pregnancy test and pictured with his wife. His 2nd post on the page is an update that he got married with the girl they had shown on Idol.

Its sad because she is supposed to be a Christian And has sex with a 15 year old and marries him. Its sad but this happens all over the south

The thing is that Triston wasn't all that bad before they started to pigeonhole him into a gyrating novelty performer. He was a decent storyteller, but 'cause he was a threat to their desired winner, Abi, they derailed him and turned him into a joke. I love Abi, but if they were going to do that to Triston, they should've avoided casting him in the first place as what the show did to him amounted to abuse as you say.

This only happens in Alabama?

Its statistically much more common in the Bible Belt but I guess these states feel it works for them

Theres a glimmer of hope in that he is probably a iittle more mature going through the show than the average high schooler. But even with that its almost impossible for a 16 year old to make a living wage

A possibly good point.  But at the very least he would’ve been more of a threat to Will.  Abi might’ve still won had he not decided (at the suggestion of TPTB or on his own) to start gyrating, but he probably would’ve been more threatening to her than Will might’ve been.  We’ll never know.

I gave Abi’s album a fair listen, although I didn’t make it to the end of most of the songs. Her voice sounds lovely, but none of these songs go anywhere, and they all sound very similar. It sounds like background music, and I can’t imagine listening to any of these songs again.  Maybe she can get one placed in a soundtrack or something, but I don’t hear any hits. I think she needs to get connected with better co-writers.

I can hear her Swift influence. Only with vocal ability. Lol

I adore it though.

Peppermint Sky sticks out most. Imo

Some of the lyrics and themes are very dark. Imo

And if it makes anyone feel better after reading my thoughts on Abi’s album, I don’t like Will’s Christmas cover. The song is a poor fit for his voice.

I refuse to listen to anyone's Christmas music. I'm definitely not the target audience for anyone in that regard. Also I didn't even know Abi had an album out already but from your commentary it doesn't sound like I'm missing out on much there either so oh well.

SO you're going to let another fan's personal opinion determine your listening experience of something you haven't even heard yet???

:/

If I'm disappointed in anything regarding Abi's album? NO BRING ME TO LIFE vibes on anything except a tad with Peppermint Sky.

Honestly, I thought the same thing. I don’t want my opinion to stop anyone from checking it out. That wasn’t the purpose of my post.

It didn't stop me from checking it out. My dislike for her singles would have stopped me anyways. Your comment was just the confirmation bias needsd to back up my own thoughts.

That’s fine. I went in with an open mind, but it’s just not for me.
