American Idol General Discussion

On top of her latest song being awesome, here’s a great article about Abi and her career outlook. She talks about why she hasn’t signed with a label yet. Also, she hired a PR firm recently and I’m guessing her getting this interview is probably a result of that.

if that's true, i hope that the some of the leftover money from Katy's salary can be re-purposed into ensuring we have *at least* the same amount of live shows we did this past season - if not more! that played a large part in it being such a fun season to watch for me. there will probably be budget cuts necessary anyways which is where some of that money will go, but i would hope this provides a bit of a cushion?

I wouldn't count on it.  MJ had previously reported that the ratings took a double digit drop from Season 21 to Season 22.

One of the reasons Idol had shorter seasons with the reboot is that longer seasons have more time to drop off in ratings. Even Season 11, the best season of all time, had this problem.

While AI22 being a longer season contributed to Abi winning the season since it allowed others to have more missteps while Abi started becoming a lot more consistent with powerful moments, Idol's very survival is at stake, and it cannot afford another massive dropoff in ratings between seasons.

What else could they place in the time slot? Most scripted shows have even lower ratings, especially in the 18-49 demo.

this is true! also, last seasons ratings were really not bad at all. there was a drop between seasons, but that is inevitable for all network television in the streaming era.

in S22 ratings steadily increased throughout the live shows and the last few episodes were the most viewed of the season/did the best in the demo. it also began to outperform The Voice in both metrics.

Additionally, there should also be a push towards the younger end as well. I know a lot of CBS dramas dominate the (non-football) overall numbers, but they skew VERY old. Nothing is going to beat football.

Also, ABC has the Super Bowl in 2026, so for Season 24, that would be an opportunity to be the lead-out if the season premiere is there.

No network is going to order more episodes - with declining ratings.  They can easily fill it with theatrical movies, which they have done.

Idol is very expensive to produce.  The demographics also skews much older.

The format is dated.  Unlike when the show was at its height, the go-to now for viewers, the industry to discover fresh talent is Tik-Tok, streaming, social media.

I am 34, and have watched AI since I was 16.

It's not going anywhere.

Especially compared to THE VOICE. Where your talent goes as far as your fifteen minutes will carry you and that's DURING live shows not post show!

Not to compare shows, (without Emmy's) and all, but I'd take Idol any day over TV and AGT and The Masked Singer...

I could see ABC replacing Idol w/ new singing show or a new variety talent show in a few years. The Idol brand is not worth much these days and even a bit tarnished according to some. Therefore, there's no upside potential. A new singing show/talent would be a risk, but might be worth it for ABC executives.

Idol is not guaranteed to stay on air. Even during the AI season 13 to Season 15 era, it had higher ratings than most things on network TV. The problem was that the estimated ratings given to advertisers were much lower than expected, causing all three of those seasons to lose a lot of money.

The same thing that happened during the tailend of the Fox era can happen to Idol now. Beating out The Voice in ratings doesn't mean that Idol will outlast The Voice either as it's matter of whether NBC has more realistic expectations of ratings for The Voice than ABC does for American Idol.

Triston is out here begging people to give him money. :dead:

I still think Idol did him wrong by turning Triston into a joke contestant. Before they told him to lean into movement, which is his biggest weakness, he was doing fine as a storyteller. But the show pretty much threw the kitchen sink and beyond at him so that his support would evaporate to engineer Abi's victory, not that I mind since I was an Abi fan.

However, Triston probably won't have a career unless he gets real career guidance to take him off the path Idol put him on with being a joke novelty act. What Idol did to him was appalling. Triston should never have been cast in the first place if that was what they were going to do to him if he threatened to derail an Abi win. Ruining someone's potential like that is distasteful.
