  1. 1. What format/structure do you prefer on The Voice?

    • Few live shows. Half (or more than half) of the artists eliminated per episode. Each team is guaranteed to have at least one singer in the finale (i.e. Seasons 1, 2, 18, 19).
      0
    • Many live shows. 1-2 artists eliminated per episode. (There may be one episode with 3 eliminations.) No team is guaranteed to have artists in the finale (i.e. Seasons 3-8).

    • Medium amount of live shows. 1-2 eliminations per episode before the Semifinals, where half (or more than half) of the artists are eliminated right before the finale. No team is guaranteed to have artists in the finale (i.e. Seasons 9-17).

  2. 2. Which of these changes to the show have you liked?

    • Instant Elimination (which was just in Season 2... sorry, Jesse)
      3
    • Coach Steals (every season since 3)
      63
    • Instant Saves (every season since 5)
      48
    • Coach Comeback Artists (Seasons 10, 12, 13)
      21
    • Coach Saves (every season since 14)
      34
    • Comeback Stage (Seasons 15, 16)
      5
    • 4-Way Knockouts (Seasons 18, 19)
      8

So people who have been watching for a while will definitely know that the show's format/structure has undergone several changes throughout the years. Seasons also used to be longer, allowing for different formats that permitted fewer eliminations per week. Which of these structures do you prefer, and why?

Sorry they are so long, by the way; it was hard for me to think of how to shorten the descriptions of how each season format works.

i honestly have liked the medium amount of live shows format the best. i feel like it gave us enough time to get to know and connect with the contestants, and it still gives us a bloodbath semifinals episode that i usually find dramatic and enjoyable. my ideal format would go from 24-13-11-10-8-4.

i love coach steals and instant saves, but i’m not crazy about the others. i’d prefer if each coach got two steals as opposed to a save. the only redeeming quality the comeback stage has is that it gave us queen Lynnea Moorer🥰

also, i don’t like when each team is guaranteed an artist in the finale. Toneisha came in second last season, but needed the IS to advance to the finale when in the original format she would have likely gotten a PV. plus i honestly think Allegra was robbed of a spot in the finale that she would have had had the original finale format been in place.

More Live Shows the better! only 1 or 2 eliminations per week works perfect.

Best change was Coach Steals, we had great artists receive a 2nd chance and even advance far or even win(Chloe)

Worst change was the 4-Way KO and Comeback stages, they are a disaster.

The more live shows, the best. But, not gonna lie, the bloodbath eliminations in the Semi-Finals has been always the most iconic ones. So i voted for the third option. It was really anti-climatic when they only eliminated one-two singers before the final. And it's also really anti-climatic when only the most voted from each team gets to advance via PV.

I know that Season 18 was shortened bc of The Olympics and then bc of COVID. And season 19 was bc of COVID delaying the filming schedule. But do you think that they will keep this terrible format going forward, despite the fact that so many fans of the show hate it? 🤔

Season 20 better not be shortened. I really liked having 6-7 weeks of live shows. 😒

totally agree with those. i voted the same as you. for the live shows and best change. however, upon rethinking it, i'd like a slow elimination at first, and then a dramatic one later on.

My ideal format for live shows is 20 -> 12 -> 10 -> 8 -> 6 -> 4. Not too much longer, but no bloodbath after the playoffs either (and no Instant Save BS, it puts artists who live in time shows that aren't EST at a disadvantage since most are relying on home voting bases to make it through vs. casuals).

Keep the steals, trash everything else.

If they stick to this disaster format, we have no reason to watch.

I would be happy with 20 -> 12 -> 10 -> 8 -> 4, we won't get more live shows than that anyways.

Coach steals and saves are fine but delete all the other gimmicks (including the blocks which I still can't get over)

Season 17's format is the perfect one for me - 12 per team, 5 per team in Play-Offs, then 13-11-10-8-4.

I wouldn't mind having 10 artists per team and a Top 17 tbh. I just don't like how quickly they eliminated artists during the season 18 and season 19 live shows. 😒

If it was the Top 17 (4 per team + winner of 4WKO) during Playoffs:

Week 1: Winner of 4WKO revealed; Top 17 Performs

  • 2 PVs on each team (3 PVs on the team with the 4WKO winner)
  • Each coach saves one of their remaining two artists while the other competes for the Instant Save (3 artists are then eliminated)

Week 2: Top 14 Performs (3 artists with lowest PV compete for Instant Save; 2 artists are then eliminated)

Week 3: Top 12 Performs (3 artists with lowest PV compete for Instant Save; 2 artists are then eliminated)

Week 4: Top 10 Performs (3 artists with lowest PV compete for Instant Save; 2 artists are then eliminated)

Week 5: Top 8 Performs (4 artists with lowest PV compete for Instant Save; 3 artists are then eliminated)

Week 6: Season Finale (Top 5 Performs)

Reading through these responses, it has really gotten me thinking.

I initially chose "Many Live Shows" because that was my favorite format; I have very fond memories of those seasons and getting to "know" each of the contestants and their styles as they had more time and exposure on the show. If I structured the show myself and had control over the number of live shows, I'd probably do it like 20-12-10-8-7-6-5-4 - but the elimination structure from Season 3 is probably the most perfect one that has actually been used, in my opinion.

But after some consideration, I realized how exciting the bloodbath semifinals are. They breathed new life into the show, and they have been thoroughly entertaining and dramatic.

In the end, I guess I'd say that "Many Live Shows" functions best for the contestants (and for viewers who prefer to get to know artists). "Medium Live Shows" functions best for making really good, entertaining, and high-stakes television while almost entirely disregarding what is best for the artists. But "Few Live Shows" just benefits nobody (especially with the requirement that each coach have a singer in the finale, which just punishes strong teams). I hope this structure is temporary instead of something they seriously plan on bringing back in a more permanent fashion.

  • 1 year later...

I was rewatching some performances of S16's Cross Battles and yes we all know that we don't want to take that hit again but man... I was reminded that I loved the idea of watching the artists perform in front of all of their opponents. I guess I wouldn't mind if, from now on, they implemented from the live shows those stands where each artist of the T24/T20 sits and watches the others artists perform. Kind of like American Idol trough an extent. It was refreshing seeing that on the voice, the acts supporting each other on S16 (you can also catch some shade/suspicious faces from certain artists while others were performing 👀)

Also, not format related but bring the old YT thumbnails back, they bring so much more views to the videos and honestly they're so much more clean than all this mess from the new ones.

Plus shoutout to Mari, she was def. on the wrong season

Agree with both of these. Cross Battles were a mess, but I loved the supportive atmosphere of the artists watching each other perform and cheering them on.

And yes, Mari was on the wrong season for sure.

The way I'd like it:

12 people per team

2 Steals in Battles

1 steal 1 save in Knockouts (Top 24 in Playoffs)

2 PV's and 1 CS per team, with 1 wildcard

Bottom 3 in Top 13, 1 winner, 2 eliminations

Bottom 2 in Top 11, 1 winner, 2 eliminations

Same as Top 13 in the Top 10, and 8

Same as Top 11 in the Top 6-5

4 finalists.

Also I'd also like it if they had the artists sitting on stage watching contestants perform in the Live shows.

They should do what the European Voice franchises do for their Knockout rounds: have the contestants within a team sing consecutively, with the rest of the artists backstage watching, providing reactions and commentary. The coach will then have a limited amount of chairs where s/he can seat their favorite acts, with the caveat that they can replace any act that they want depending on how the performances. The drama that will ensue from this format would be DELICIOUS. And it will prevent robberies because the coach can now make a more informed decision on who should move on because s/he will have seen all the performances and will have a better gauge on who truly stood out from their team.

TLDR, Basically I want The Voice to crib the Chair Challenge format from X Factor.

No to this. That format is one of the many reasons i always despised The X Factor.

The format from the Seasons 3-5 of The Voice UK would be better. The contestants sing one by one and at the end, their coach pick three to advance to the live shows.

Here is an example, i think it provides enough drama too. Just look at the faces of the contestants. Iconic :giggle:
