I thought she was indie-rock.

She’s more in the style of classic-rock I think, at least on the show

Popping in now that I'm home from work with some thoughts:

I still enjoy watching the show 20 seasons in, but my reasons for sticking around have sort of evolved since I first watched (I've been a regular watcher for ~3 seasons and on-and-off for most of the show's run before that and filled in the gaps over quarantine).

Originally I watched because I wanted to see contestants succeed with a dash of coach banter thrown in, since at the time AI was on its decline and the concept of an artist being judged solely on their voice vs. whether they were "the whole package" appealed to me, as did less drama with the coach panel (my last AI full-season watch was the Nicki vs. Mariah season). Now, I watch because I enjoy the coach dynamic and expanding my musical taste a little bit + I like meeting the new artists, but I don't expect artists to become household names off the show.

My biggest beef with the show, other than the shift away from at least pretending to care about the artists, is the reliance on the same basic artist types to fill in the finale or semi-finals: young female pop artists, male country artists, and the soulful powerhouse woman + at least one "other" type of act. It's formulaic and makes things easy to predict, which makes it harder to get invested in artists outside of those lanes; in turn, getting less invested in those artists makes it harder for the show to recruit them, which becomes a tricky cycle to break out of. It also stinks because it means artists that may have done well on the show in the past (Michelle Chamuel's electropop vibes, Terry McDermott being an "older" classic rock artist, or Kimberly Nichole + Amanda Brown being powerfully-voiced black female rockers, among others) would have little chance of success with today's audience.

Variety is what makes a show like this more interesting - take seasons 12 and 13, for example. We had some artists in each season that filled those traditional lanes, but we also had artists outside the mold who did well and still get mentioned to this day: for S12, that includes Hunter, Lauren, Vanessa, Brennley, and Stephanie; for S13, look at Chloe, Addison, Noah, Davon, or Keisha. Those two seasons show that it's possible to take the concept of this show and still make it interesting even years after its initial inception.

As for Season 20's artists, I definitely enjoy a lot of the people we've met so far (Lindsay, Zae, Corey, Dana, Kenzie, Gihanna, Anna, Cam, etc.) but after 20 seasons of finding people, there's just not time to get truly and deeply invested in all of the people I want to - and getting invested is something I want to do because these artists are people too; despite saying stuff like "Contestant ABC is the new [contestant XYZ]" it's not true, because even though similarities may be there no two artists are quite alike.

In short, though I still enjoy watching The Voice several years on and after almost a year of constant posting on here, it's not what it used to be; though change can be a good thing, having a show and an audience that don't stay as in tune with the core of what the show was supposed to be about makes it hard to argue that it's a show worth sinking large amounts of time and energy into. Good changes have for sure been made (ie, battle steals + introducing KOs + eventually adding KO steals), but at the end of the day there's enough questionable changes to the core formula (like reducing the number of live shows + number of songs an artist gets to record, adding in the Instant Save, and increasing the focus on the coach dynamics rather than the artists competing in a season) that for truly unique or outstanding artists, it's not worth their time either.

I´m personally one of those people who, even though the winner sounds pretty obvious, and the show has become quite predictable, still finds enjoyment in watching it either way, especially when there´s multiple artists I like, even though I know all of them won´t make through.

I was just about to comment something similar! I watch the show because there are contestants I like, not because I expect my favorites to win. Even if the winner is obvious, I care to hear people sing more than I care for suspense. That's why I watched Season 19; I liked Cami, DeSz, Bailey along with Jim, Ian, Tamara, and Carter to a lesser extent. Even though I knew my favorite would not win, I enjoyed watching Cami and others' performances! Even watching Marisa/Kelsie/Lauren in the pre-taped rounds was fun, though I knew they'd get eliminated.

I’m hoping for a surprise winner! 😀

Nah, I rather have the expected winner win this season. This will be IDF's season to finally predict the right artist. :giggle:

I mean this is just adding to the problem imo. By constantly saying “x contestant” is the new “y contestant” we are just boxing contestants into a lane and not giving people any incentive to support the prior contestant, since there’s supposedly a “new” one.

The problem is it usually ends badly for these contestants and we end up with a sour taste in our mouths. But, then we get to say they were robbed for the next 10 years, so it’s not all bad, I guess. :P

Going back to S20 specifically, the odds point to a Kenzie win, something I will consider deserving if he performs like I know he can. I still enjoy quite a few artists this season as well, so I´ll gladly continue watching them. There are three in particular I´ll keep my eye on after the show.

Who might they be?

So far Pete, Corey, and Jordan (his audition didn´t live up to what I was expecting, but his off show material is fantastic).

I actually am going to lean towards Nick winning with Rachel.

Kenzie will obviously make the finals with Kelly but he will have to compete against another Blake country artist and likely Blake's friend at that since Jordan doesnt seem ery likeable.

I think with two country singers in the finals the one on Blake's team has the upperhand. However, there will likely be enough of a vote split to give Rachael the win

Pete isn’t a country singer and neither is Jordan. Kenzie is the last male country singer remaining. I think there’s a female country singer in the 4-way KO, but I don’t expect her to contend.

I can see Jordan being classified as country by the audience, but I think Pete is pretty far from country based on his audition imo.

Seems like Jordan went away from that after his blind, which didn’t sound country at all to me, other than the fact that it was a country song. I think he should avoid country, honestly.

I feel like Jordan would break out in hives at the prospect of being labeled country instead of blues/rock, tbh, while Pete would be sort of okay with the "country" label even though he reads more old-school-pop-blues vocally than anything else.

That’s the funny thing... someone asked her why she chose “Slow Burn” during the ToZae Show and she seemed to not really want to lean too far in the country direction, which is strange. :lmao:

Country gets votes, so it's a legit strategy - that said, Neon Moon is her most country song pick by, well, a country mile no i'm not sorry for that joke

Pete isn´t country, but I´d feel like he would have no problem slipping in there if needed. After all, he started playing country music originally. He joked he could do some Blake songs in his livestream (which I hope doesn´t happen, but still).

Jordan doesn´t sound country, and his audition didn´t really enamoured Minivan as I thought it was going to, so he should stick to what he does best: rock and blues.

Off topic, but both of them are great guitarrists, hope that they will be able to showcase their skills at one point on the show.

Yeah, that’s true. Emma has watched the show in the past, so I’m sure she’s aware of all this (she said her top two coach choices were Blake and Kelly, so she definitely knows what she’s doing.)

*Googles "Lips of an Angel genre" to see if someone could give it to Jordan and say it's in his wheelhouse even though it'd be an obvious bus choice to any viewer who's been following the show for a long enough time*

You're right about Pete. I havent followed his team closely and assumed since they were friends he is country. He's pretty good. Would probably look too weird for him to win though
