15. HELEN - RAMPART (2011)

From Wikipedia: "It is set in the midst of the fallout from the Rampart scandal of the late 1990s, when corrupt Los Angeles Police Department Officer Dave Brown (Harrelson) is forced to face the consequences of his wayward career." Brie Larson plays Dave Brown's rebellious teen daughter Helen. According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Rampart sends viewers plummeting into a nihilistic hell of its protagonist's creation, yet Woody Harrelson's performance in the central role is too magnetic to dismiss."

DEE - 14 - Pretty good movie, but she has a minor role. That is why this lands where it does.

MEGAN - 15 - Even as a Brie Larson superfan I know like nothing about this movie and she has like 9th billing on Wikipedia. A fitting last place.

 

 

14. SARA - GREENBERG (2010)

From IMDB: "The film follows Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller), a 40-year-old man who has recently suffered a nervous breakdown and is now struggling to just "do nothing." He returns to L.A., where he had grown up and had a semi-successful rock band, and housesits for his brother, Phillip (Chris Messina), while he and his family are away on an extended vacation. Greenberg meets his brother's assistant, Florence (Greta Gerwig), and begins a halting, awkward romance with her." Brie Larson plays Sara, Roger's college-age niece. According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Greenberg's title character is harder to like than most, but Ben Stiller's nuanced performance and a darkly funny script help take the misanthropic edge off."

CHRIS - 10 - Never seen this movie but I cut it in the film rankdown so I am familiar with it. I was intrigued by it & probably would watch it because the cast is excellent.

DEE - 11 - Really good film, but she does not jump into the film until later on.

ALEX - 15 - Honestly I saw this movie years ago and didn't really like it. Her part in the movie was...weird? I should've cut it.

 

 

13. JEANNETTE WALLS - THE GLASS CASTLE (2017)

From Wikipedia: "It is based on Jeannette Walls' 2005 best-selling memoir of the same name. Depicting Walls' childhood, where her family lived in poverty and sometimes as squatters, the film stars Brie Larson as Walls." According to Rotten Tomatoes, "The Glass Castle' has an affecting real-life story and an outstanding performance by Brie Larson, but these aren't enough to outweigh a fundamentally misguided approach to the material."

CHRIS - 8 - Responsible for this movie being cut in the film rankdown because it is mediocre. But Brie? She was the highlight of the movie.

MEGAN - 8 - This is the movie I had the most trouble ranking because it's not the best movie but Brie Larson is really good in it. It's one of those movies you should watch just for Brie Larson even though the rest of it is deeply flawed.

DEE - 15 - Bad film with a bad final message. I feel like the interpretation of Walls' memoir was not very good, but Brie Larson is of course phenomenal and carries this movie on her back.

 

 

12. JUSTINE - FREE FIRE (2016)

From Insider: "In this movie about an arms deal that backfires, Larson plays Justine, a businesswoman who's part of a black-market deal that results in a massive shootout." According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Free Fire aims squarely for genre thrills, and hits its target repeatedly and with great gusto—albeit with something less than pure cinematic grace."

11. MASON WEAVER - KONG: SKULL ISLAND (2017)

From Insider: "In the film, Larson plays Mason Weaver, a photojournalist on an expedition to explore the recently discovered Skull Island, which houses a giant ape." From Wikipedia: "An anti-war photographer and investigative photojournalist. Larson stated that her character has her 'own sort of motive' as to why she joined the expedition. Larson further added that Weaver has an 'interest and respect for nature' and 'Through that she has a closer, more loving, and intimate relationship with Kong.'" According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Offering exhilarating eye candy, solid acting, and a fast-paced story, Kong: Skull Island earns its spot in the movie monster's mythos without ever matching up to the classic original."

DEE - 10 - Critics gave her so much sh*t for doing this film after winning the Academy Award for Room, yet this is the best King Kong film since the 1933 original. Really solid popcorn flick.

MEN NEVER GET FLACK FOR DOING POPCORN FLICKS AFTER ACADEMY AWARDS (do not check me on this. But if Brie were a man I'm sure she wouldn't have been criticized).

 

Also. With our next round being Natalie Portman this is really an actress who should be criticized for her next role immediately after winning an Academy Award because it was this movie:

10. MONICA MARTELLO - DON JON (2013)

From IMDB: "A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love." Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the lead role Don, and Brie Larson plays his sister. DEE - 6 - Even though her role in the film is small, my love for this movie is too much to actually rank this any lower. Expect me to ask for a Julianne Moore round so that I can gush about this movie.

CHRIS - 7 - I've seen it & I enjoyed the movie, but again, not her best role.

ALEX - 9 - I watched a compilation of all her moments on YouTube. She sat there texting for all of it and then said one line at the end. Anna Paquin from The Irishman found dead!

9. MAX - DIGGING FOR FIRE (2015)

From IMDB: "The discovery of a bone and a gun send a husband and wife on separate adventures over the course of a weekend." The film has an ensemble cast, and Brie plays Max, a friend that is invited to stay at the house over the weekend. According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Digging for Fire finds director/co-writer Joe Swanberg working from a familiar palette, but in ways that suggest he's taking new and exciting strides as a filmmaker."

ALEX - 5 - I'm ranking it rather high despite never seeing it because it seems like the kind of white person indie movie I'd actualy like.

DEE - 8 - Pretty sure this film was not submitted to the Film Rankdown, which is disappointing. Really underrated piece.

CHRIS - 11 - Here by default. But queen of convincing the producers to ensure her character is not sexually attracted to another character.

8. KIT - UNICORN STORE (2017)

Unicorn Store is a love letter to everyone's inner child, and a reminder that no dream is impossible." Unicorn Store is Brie Larson's directorial debut. According to Rotten Tomatoes, "It'll be best enjoyed by audiences with a high tolerance for colorful whimsy, but Unicorn Store is easy to like — and it suggests Brie Larson has a future behind the camera."

DEE - 12 - Okay so the film is messy. Her performance is amazing though, and I think she shows the early makings of quite an interesting filmmaker!

7. RACHEL - COMMUNITY (2013)

From the Community Wiki: "Rachel is a student at Greendale Community College who has a work/study student job on the event staff. Her current gig is as a coat check girl where she tags party goers coats and other miscellaneous items they brought to school functions and give them tickets to claim their possessions later when they leave. She and Abed have a mutual attraction to each other due to their love of television and movie tropes." In addition, "Rachel is the only character introduced in Season Four (the only season to be produced without creator Dan Harmon) to later appear in Season Five. Rachel was one of the few positive elements Harmon singled out as he had made very negative comments about his dislike of Season Four on his podcast."

ANDY - 7 - Not one of the most prominent characters lol but I adore Community so it ranks this high by default

CHRIS - 9 - I am sure she's great in it but I never finished Community so I cannot confirm.

DEE - 9 - Biased ranking. She appears in three episodes only, though two of those episodes are amazing.

ALEX - 11 - I had no idea she was in Community, then I realized it was the later seasons after I stopped watching. UNITED STATES OF TARA SHOULD'VE BEEN THE TV REPRESENTATION!

MEGAN - 13 - Her role just isn't that big. She was only in three episodes. Really United States of Tara should be here and should be much higher.

 

 

6. CASSIDY - THE SPECTACULAR NOW (2013)

From IMDB: "A hard-partying high school senior's philosophy on life changes when he meets the not-so-typical 'nice girl.'" Brie Larson plays Cassidy, Miles Teller's character's girlfriend who breaks up with him due to seeing no future with him. According to Rotten Tomatoes, "The Spectacular Now is an adroit, sensitive film that avoids typical coming-of-age story trappings."

ANDY - 3 - Super cute movie and Brie is a great part of it

CHRIS - 4 - I liked this movie & I thought Brie was great in it.

MEGAN - 4 - I'll admit that Brie Larson does not have a big role in this movie (though she gets to dump Miles Teller because she has ambition and he does not which is great. Everybody should dump their high school boyfriends! My advice to all straight teenage women!), but I'd feel really bad about putting this movie which is so good much lower than this.

DEE - 7 - LOL coming-of-age dramas are typically bad, but this film is fantastic. Though this film belongs to Woodley and Teller, Larson still is an integral part in telling the story of Sutter's grapple with alcoholism.

QK - 10

ALEX - 12 - Brie Larson being the hot ex-girlfriend IT'S WHAT SHE DESERVES. Very one-dimensional part though.

5. EVA ANSLEY - JUST MERCY (2019)

From Wikipedia: "It tells the true story of Walter McMillian, who, with the help of young defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, appeals his murder conviction. The film is based on the memoir of the same name, written by Stevenson." The film starts as "young Harvard law graduate Bryan Stevenson travels to Alabama hoping to help fight for poor people who cannot afford proper legal representation. 4. CAROL DANVERS A.K.A. CAPTAIN MARVEL - CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019)

From Wikipedia: "Set in 1995, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien civilizations." Captain Marvel is Marvel Studios's first female-led superhero film. Carol Danvers is "An ex-U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and member of an elite Kree military unit called Starforce. She was imbued with superhuman strength, energy projection, and flight after exposure to Tesseract energy." According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Packed with action, humor, and visual thrills, Captain Marvel introduces the MCU's latest hero with an origin story that makes effective use of the franchise's signature formula." Brie Larson's performance was praised, with a review in The Rolling Stones saying she brought "layers of feeling to a role that a lesser actress might have let slide by on pyrotechnics. You see how she lays the foundation for a character who defies male objectification and becomes akin to what Joni Mitchell called 'a woman of heart and mind."

MEGAN - 2 - I'd say that this is my bias ranking, but I think that really underscores how much I f*cking love Captain Marvel and how Brie Larson really surprised me in her role here. I know that nobody is reading this in the same order that I am writing this but if Short Term 12 hasn't been revealed yet you can see how much I've really loved Brie Larson for years before Captain Marvel was released, and yet when Brie Larson was announced as the lead I was a little underwhelmed. Just because the roles I had really enjoyed Brie Larson in and the image of Captain Marvel I had in my head didn't really match. But honestly, I should have known better than to second guess Brie Larson who turned out amazing. I feel like Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain Marvel doesn't really get the praise I think it deserves. And I know that's partially because it was coming off the heels of the very critically (and deservedly) acclaimed Wonder Woman, but Captain Marvel spoke to me more. I feel like Brie Larson nailed the role in terms of both the power and the humor that role needs. All this to say that Brie both surprised me in the role and as a Captain Marvel superfan I was deeply satisfied by both Brie and the movie itself. (And if this were a write-up just on the movie I'd opine all day about how Captain Marvel really feels much more like a movie made to appeal specifically to women as opposed to Wonder Woman and that Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn beats both Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman on that metric but that's for another longer write-up. Suffice to say. Captain Marvel is incredible and make Carol Danvers gay!)

DEE - 3 - Carol Danvers kicks ass. Period.

ALEX - 4 - Carol Danvers. RT if you agree.

ANDY - 4 - I was quite surprised to see Brie headlining a Marvel movie, at the time I hadn't considered her as a superhero but she absolutely kills it and Carol Danvers is one of the best members of the Marvel universe

CHRIS - 15 - It'll probably going to win, but who knows so I am ranking it last. #shocker

 

 

3. GRACE - SHORT TERM 12 (2013)

From Wikipedia: "The film stars Brie Larson as Grace Howard, a young supervisor of a group home for troubled teenagers. The film was the first leading performance of Larson's career." According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Short Term 12 is an emphatic, revealing drama that pulls audiences into the perspective of neglected youths." As for reviews of Brie Larson's performance, Wikipedia notes "Brie Larson's performance as Grace was singled out for praise by critics. Katie Walsh of Indiewire wrote, '[Larson] manages to convey her character as someone fierce and strong and steely, and also utterly fragile, delicate, scared and broken ... It's an incredible emotional and physical performance, and she's a whirlwind.' Similarly, Empire critic Ian Freer felt that Larson gave 'a whirling dervish of a performance ... She, like the film, breaks your heart and raises your spirit in one fell swoop.'"

ANDY - 1 - Brie gives one of my favorite movie performances of the last decade, it's a powerful performance in an equally powerful film that moved me greatly

DEE - 1 - One of the best films that I have ever watched. Brie Larson is so gritty and raw and heartbreaking and hopeful all at the same time. Such an incredible piece of art.

MEGAN - 1 - Short Term 12 is one of the best movies I've ever watched and one of my favorites, and I think that up until this point Brie Larson had been fine to good in every single movie and show she'd been in (shout out to United States of Tara and Scott Pilgrim) but this is the movie where she really showed her prowess as just a really amazing actress. The part is good to begin with script wise, but everything she brings to it is just *chef's kiss* so good. I know Brie Larson eventually did win her Academy Award for her great performance in Room but I strongly believe that this is not only the movie and role she should have won for but was by far the best performance by an actress in all of 2013. I really cannot think off the top of my head a movie or a performance that I liked more in 2013. Also to note, this movie not only had Brie Larson but it also starred Kaitlyn Dever, Rami Malek, Lakeith Stanfield, and Stephanie Beatriz. All incredible actors and actresses who would be in so many amazing movies and tv shows to come. It's no wonder that this movie is just so incredibly good.

ALEX - 2 - Obviously gonna win. This movie has everything in it and Brie Larson is flawless.

CHRIS - 6 - Actually never seen it but I need to see it because I absolutely loved the trailer. And I am sure that I'd love it more than the movies I've seen that are ranked below this.

2. NATALIE "ENVY" ADAMS - SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010)

From Wikipedia: "It stars Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, a slacker musician who must win a competition to get a record deal, and battle the seven evil exes of his newest girlfriend Ramona Flowers." Described by the Scott Pilgrim Wiki, "Natalie V. "Envy" Adams is Scott Pilgrim's ex-girlfriend who brutally dumped Scott in college prior to the events of the book. She was initially a quiet, mousey girl, but she decides to change herself and her self image. She ends up becoming more callous and aggressive in contrast to her initial personality. Natalie eventually takes over Scott's band and dumps him without warning." According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Its script may not be as dazzling as its eye-popping visuals, but Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is fast, funny, and inventive." According to producer Edgar Wright, "the audition of then-18-year-old Brie Larson 'blew everybody else away': executive producer "Jared [LeBoff] and I both said afterward, "We've got to cast her."

ALEX - 3 - Brie Larson singing "Black Sheep" was a cultural reset.

CHRIS - 3 - A movie that I surprisingly liked! Not her best role, per say, but still good.

DEE - 4 - Envy Adams is the strongest part in one of the greatest movies of all-time. I will not hear anything different.

MEGAN - 5 - Again another movie I like a lot but not necessarily one of Brie Larson's biggest roles. But I think like twice weekly I listen to her cover of "Black Sheep" on youtube. Also Envy Adams is far more than justified in breaking up with Scott Pilgrim. Also, another movie with just a really stellar cast. Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Michael Cera. Again all people that would go on to do really good stuff and favorites of mine.

 

ANDY - 6 - a movie I think is a bit overrated but I still enjoy it, Envy Adams is one of my favorite characters

 

 

1. JOY "MA" NEWSOME - ROOM (2015)

From Wikipedia: "It stars Brie Larson as a woman who has been held captive for seven years and whose 5-year-old son (Jacob Tremblay) was born in captivity. Their escape allows the boy to experience the outside world for the first time. Cited as one of the best films of the year, Room received numerous awards and nominations. At the 88th Academy Awards, Room received four nominations, including Best Picture, and winning Best Actress for Larson. It also won nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture, and seven Irish Film & Television Awards, including Best Film. Larson won the BAFTA for Best Actress." According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Led by incredible work from Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, Room makes for an unforgettably harrowing—and undeniably rewarding—experience." As for reviews of her performance, Wikipedia adds "The central performances of Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay have received critical acclaim. ALEX - 1 - Boring and predictable number one, but it's an absolute juggernaut of a performance and one of my favorite acting performances I've ever seen. Just an absolute juggernaut of a performance.

CHRIS - 1 - May be predictable but the movie is great & Brie is flawless in it.

ANDY - 2 - Slightly Oscar-baity performance but incredible in its own right

DEE - 2 - Magnificent. A career-defining performance. Deserved every single award it earned her. Her performance intertwined with that of Tremblay's...truly such an enthralling film that is successful because Brie Larson is beyond talented.

MEGAN - 3 - Not my favorite of her performances. But it has to be number 3 because she finally got the Academy Award she deserved after Short Term 12.
