Solaris
19. Sean Rector Survivor: Marquesas 5th Place Average: 13.67 RANKINGS: Alex - 4/20 JC - 8/20 Andy - 9/20 Andrelliott - 12/20 Hayden - 15/20 Steven - 17/20 Public - 18/20 Amanda - 20/20 Zoey - 20/20 ALEX Quote Sean Rector If I'm being honest with myself, I don't love Sean more than a few people I ranked below him. But I think the interesting thing about some of these themed rankdowns that are played yearly is we can determine who is most deserving of the endgame each year. I think Sean represents 2020 flawlessly so I fought for him to get to this point. Despite the fact that I'm very anti-man right now, I can't rank Sean low because of how I fought for him and how important of a character he is in the Survivor canon. Sean is an amazing man and role model and he was WAY ahead of his time on Survivor: Marquesas. A lot of what he was saying at the time seemed "revolutionary", but it's how we should've been thinking all along. Sean has reentered the Survivor community to discuss race on the show as of late and he's been amazing at it. Sean's opening confessional comparing Sarah to Cleopatra was instantly iconic and established himself as a strong narrator. Sean found himself on a starting tribe with Vecepia and capitalized on the bond they have as the only two Black players in the game. However, they also knew that just being seen as talking to each other, they would automatically be seen as a pair and how they had so many extra hurdles to overcome. Sean very eloquently discussed his bond with Vecepia and how the other five also have a similar bond, despite how different they are, that can give them numbers. I'm sure everything Sean was saying was viewed as controversial at the time, but he was completely correct as we've seen time and time again on reality tv (hell look at BB22 right now). I really enjoyed Sean's game and he had a lot of innovative strategies. He hooked up with Boston Rob pretty early in the game and the two of them kinda caused mass chaos during the pre-merge. For the first time, the leader was dethroned before a swap or a merge. They decided to secure their numbers and realized they didn't actually need Hunter. When it seemed like Sean could be in trouble at the swap, he managed to bond with the Rotu 4 and got them to boot Gabriel instead of any of him, Rob, or Vee. They still didn't have the numbers at the merge, but Sean managed to convince Kathy to flip which led to Neleh & Paschal flipping and gave us the first power shift in Survivor history. Sean should've made a move against Neleh earlier, but he should still be proud of himself for making it to the final five though. Sean's one of my favorites though because he's just so funny. Sean and Paschal on the horse reward with Sean terrified riding the horse is one of my favorite scenes ever. He also gave us the morning show, and a lot of hilarious commentary on race. Maybe him comparing himself to a slave for having to work was a bit #much, but I don't want to invalidate his experiences and it was also really funny to watch . Sean also has a lot of fire and passion. Sean's big blowup on John at the merge when he realized John was sticking with Rotu was a really emotional scene. Especially since Sean was so hurt because he felt the two of them bonded over being minorities. Sean is just a really unexpected character that, I think, when you revisit in 2020 you gain a lot more appreciation for. As I said, a lot of his commentary was really way ahead of its time. Some of the stuff he said would still be controversial now, let alone how in 2003. Even though he isn't actually a top all-time favorite of mine, I think it was appropriate for me to fight for Sean and work to get him to this point in the game and I'm glad I did because he deserves it. JC Quote Sean Rector - I honestly do not remember much about him but glad he won over Vecepia to give us another male winner. ANDY Quote SEAN RECTOR - Pleasant surprise seeing Sean in the top 20! I love him, loved him on Marquesas, love him now. He did a really cool interview with Rob on RHAP recently and I really liked hearing from him. A truly intelligent, well-spoken, and entertaining human. Hope he can rank above like #20 lol. I probably like some people ranked below him as characters a bit more, but he deserves more recognition so I’m ranking him at #9. ANDRELLIOTT Quote missing write up oops! HAYDEN Quote 15.) Sean Rector I’m really glad that Sean has managed to last this deep into the game. Sean had moments like comparing Sarah to Cleopatra, being a part of the Maraamu morning crew, his confessional when he voted out John, and more. Once Sean reached the final five, he was voted out due to Kathy choosing Neleh/Paschal over him and Vecepia. I do know that Sean has kinda distanced himself from Survivor over issues of lack of diversity, and he has talked about it on a huge panel of Black Survivors on Rob’s podcast, which was really neat to see. So, I doubt Sean will ever return, but I really enjoyed him tbh. STEVEN Quote SEAN RECTOR Sean was a crucial player in Survivor: Marquesas, most notably when he played a big role in overthrowing the majority alliance and allowing the outsiders to take over. This new alliance successfully picked off the rest of the Rotu 4 until they were the only ones left. Sean ended up being the first casualty when his alliance members were forced to turn on one another. As a juror, Sean voted for his close ally Vecepia to win the game. In addition, he was an outspoken player and unafraid to call out any implicit biases the other castaways had. He was the first Survivor castaway to do so, and a lot of what he pointed out can still be applied to shows still on the air today. I feel bad ranking him this low, but Marquesas is a season I don't remember too well. Nonetheless, I think Sean's a worthy castaway to be part of this Top 20. PUBLIC Quote I am shocked Sean was able to make it to the Top 20. Hell I am surprised Marquesas is represented at all. I am not sure how far he made it his first time around, but he seemed to have a fair bit of support in the middle of the game when he got nominated. I ranked him #17 so he ended up about where I expected in the overall placement. AMANDA Quote I don't really remember Sean, or Marquesas as a whole, so ranking him at #20 was a very easy decision for me. Apparently, this has to be 100 words so this is gonna be a struggle. I will say, his above comment while voting for John was a fun moment and that's literally the only thing I remember. I really need to rewatch Marquesas. Anyway, Sean is nice and I nominated him against Mike Holloway because I figured he was liked enough to win that battle. Turns out I was right. I'm sure his bigger fans will have more to say about him, but congrats to him for being one of the few guys to make the Top 20 here. Definitely an achievement as far as IDF rankdowns are concerned. I just can't rank him higher because I like the rest of this top 20 more than him. @Alex95 @*Amanda @sublymonal @Elliott @#jeah @hayden98 @JC @Steven_ @Zoey Edited September 29, 2020 by Solaris

sublymonal
I agree with Alex’s writeup that Sean was definitely ahead of his time. While I wouldn’t rank him in my personal Top 20 by any means, he is one of the good parts of Marquesas, for sure.
