Songs Performed Once - and 'Never' Again

Basically, songs that ONLY ONEĀ contestant ever tried in the history of the show, it never happened again... and it should stay that way.

Ā

For better or for worse, of course. :haha:

Ā

FOR BETTER:

  • Jordan Smith - "Somebody to Love."Ā The Queen one, not the OneRepublic songĀ that Todd Michael Hall was unfortunate enough to get stuck with. Jordan laid that song to rest, and it would be a mistake for anyone to ever try to do it again because we're all going to compare it to Jordan, and it isn't going to beat his.
  • Judith Hill - "What a Girl Wants." A pure classic. I LOVE Christina Aguilera, but I even preferred Judith's version over hers. No one ever needs to touch this again. The song doesn't seem like it would fit what the show is going for in 2020, anyway. This show was VERY different in 2013.
  • Vanessa Ferguson - "Doo-Wop (That Thing)."Ā From what I remember, Lauryn Hill gave Vanessa special permission to sing it, because the show didn't have permission to do it otherwise. That's fine, though, because no one else ever needs to try it. It's an extremely difficult song to sing, and only Vanessa had the swag to pull off the rap portions.
  • Kyla Jade - "You Don't Own Me."Ā Same as Jordan Smith; the arrangement was perfect, her attitude wasĀ šŸ”„, her voice was šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„, and it was just iconic. Any future versions will inevitably pale in comparison.

Ā

FOR WORSE:

  • Erin Martin - "Walk Like an Egyptian." It doesn't have a good melody for a singing show, and it's too fast-paced. Erin tanked this one so hard.
  • Shane Q - "Caribbean Queen." I love the Billy Ocean original, but it's clear that the producers slapped this one on Shane because they wanted him to go home. He was probably the worst possible person to sing this song because he didn't have the swag or energy to pull it off; it's a hard song, anyway. I can't think of a single person in this show's 18 seasons who would have been able to sing this well, anyway. Maybe Chris Blue? Even then, it would've been one of his worst performances.

Ā

I can think of just a few others, but I don't want to take ALL of them...Ā :P

Hate to be the ACKSHUALLY guy here, but Cody Belew did perform Somebody to Love in Season 3 during the top 8 round. And he was eliminated:

Ā

To add onto your list however, Cassadee Pope's Over You

Obviously there are multiple reasons why we'll never get this song on the show again, but still stunning.

ItĀ“s hard since a lot of songs on this show are often repeated lol, but hereĀ“s what I think:

Ā

FOR BETTER:

Ā

Kyla Jade- One Night Only: She straight up killed that song, and that should have been enough for her to win imo.

Rose Short- GodĀ“s Country:Ā Another fantastic vocal that was out of her comfort song, and she made it her own.Ā

Laith Al Saadi- White Room:Ā HeĀ had the chops, both vocally and on guitar to take on this classic, although I would have actually wanted to see Michael Lee from S15 give this a try.

Matthew Schuler- Cosmic Love: Fantastic, the power in this manĀ“s lungs is incredible.

Maelyn Jarmon- Mad World: I know some contestants before have performed it, but this still remains my favorite of hers, especially considering it was live.

Thunderstorm Artis- Blackbird: Same as Maelyn, the soulful spin he gave it canĀ“t be beaten on this song imo.

Ā

FOR WORSE:

Aaron Gibson- Everything I Do I Do it for you : The song is a corny as it can get, and I say that as a Bryan Adams fan, and worse, it was way out of AaronĀ“s range, it just didnĀ“t fit him or his rasp at all.Ā

Deandre Nico and Shawn Sounds- ThatĀ“s What I Like: This song has been performed only twice, and it eliminated two contestants who were both 4 chair turns and are otherwise very capable singers. ThatĀ“s pretty much evidence that it shouldnĀ“t be touched.

I didnĀ“t watch S3 and S4 live, and I forgot about that the latter two have sung it , but still, itĀ“s not really a song that will do you any favors.

this, also pretty much any Maelyn songs.Ā

(Even if I want it to secretly be done my future artists who would slay it even if below Maelyn's level obviously)

Tate Brusa's pitchy version says hi... ill forgive you for not remembering cause tbh who would want to remember (jk jk he wasn't that horrible, but no one can even compare to maelyn)

Yeah I remember that... I try to forget it, thanks for the reminder!Ā šŸ¤¢

Jk, but in all, I was hoping SLAYERS, not... someone like Tate to cover it again.

I agree with all of yours, but especially these.

Ā

About Kyla - I was conflicted between this and "You Don't Own Me," but I went with the latter because I wasn't sure if anyone ever tried "One Night" before. But I thought she should have won at "Let It Be." That should've been it. End the show at the Top 8. Done. But we could've ended it at Top 12 and I would've been fine with that, too. Kyla is my second favorite contestant in the show's history, so... yeah, I'd have been okay with it ending there. I've seen this performance at least 50 times, and the ending gets me hyped every time. Kelly, too, apparently;Ā I love the little bounce she does at the big note. :haha:

Ā

About Rose - yeah, it was honestly a mistake to give HER that song before any country singers had a chance to do mediocre and uninspiring covers of it first. No one will ever be able to sing this song without reminding me of how superior Rose's remake is.

Ā

And "That's What I Like" is a song that practically ONLY Bruno Mars can sing. I feel sorry for anyone who gets stuck with this song. It destroyed DeAndre (well, alongside RobeGate, of course) and annihilated Shawn's chances of staying (although, to be fair, Andrew Sevener gave such a good Instant Save performance and was on Team Blake, that Shawn probably couldn't do anything to boost his odds).

Ā

No need to hate it!Ā I appreciate the correction. I had no idea that this song had ever been performed before. And God, I hope it will never be performed again.

Ā

And about Cassadee - that performance is one of the most special in the show's history. I totally get why we'll never hear it again, and it's bittersweet for me. On one hand, I can think of a lot of singers on the show who would have done a great job with it. On the other hand, I kinda like the idea of Cassadee's version being immortal.

Ā

And from the same season (which honestly gave us a lot of these kinds of performances) - I would've saidĀ Amanda Brown - "Dream On", but Koryn Hawthorne had to do it in Season 8. Hers was okay, but again, I found myself comparing it to Amanda's. I remember hoping last season that Rose Short would end the finale with a cover of it, since she's so good at crossing genres - but maybe it's for the best that she didn't. And again, from the same season,Ā Trevin Hunte - "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."Ā Never again. He Jordan Smithed it. He laid it to rest. Never again, from a male or female singer. Ever.

Ā

Vanessa Ferguson - the queen in my profile picture.Ā šŸ„°Ā She's the only contestant for whom I purchased every single one of the iTunes covers - and I still listen to them regularly.

Ā

Kyla is only second because I didn't buy every single one of hers, but I'd say she's the superior vocalist overall. And I will never stop being salty over the fact that Kyla should have won.

  • istersay changed the title to Songs Performed Once - and 'Never' Again

Several of Danielle's competition songs were not performed again (and IMO shouldn't be performed on The Voice again because I will forever compare them to Danielle.)

Ā

Maybe It Was Memphis

Heads Carolina, Tails California

Who I Am

Please Remember Me

Born To Fly

didn't Darby Walker from S11 do it before her (albeit pretty horribly)

Other notable ones that come to mind:

For better:

Addison Agen - Both Sides Now

Davon Fleming - Me & Mr. Jones

Janice Freeman & Katrina Rose - W.O.M.A.N.

Ā

I don't personally agree with the whole "one person absolutely slayed this and nobody else should ever try it again..." idea, but anybody who tries to perform these songs definitely has a standard to live up to, or they have to somehow make it their own (ex:Ā Alisan's version of Blue Bayou is obviously one of the top auditions of all time, but I thought Karli's version in S13 was gorgeous in her own way because she's a completely different vocal style than Alisan. Same with Noah & Mikaela's version of Electric Love. Same with Noah & SandyRedd's versions of River.)
